I was involed in a violent hit and run "road rage" incident yesterday with a guy in an old p/u. When DPS came to report the incident, his only comment to me was to get a CCW permit. He said you need to protect yourself, the area is quite large to patrol and it can take some time to get to you. How is that supposed to help avoid an accident?? I know the laws are pretty relaxed in AZ, but damn, why would an officer tell me to carry a gun? I agree, that freedom to bear arms is a great priveledge afforded to us. If someone shoots at you and physically threatens life and property then yes you have a right to protect yourself. So where can you obtain a permit, attend a course or pay some $ for a permit?

Not sure why exactly the officer told you to get a CCW, I mean yeah it could help you but since we are in AZ, you can carry a weapon openly in your vehicle to begin wtih. Oh well.
As for CCW testing centers, take a look at this:
http://www.dps.state.az.us/ccw/orgs.asp
That should have most places near you. The other thing is that if you do own a weapon, taking the CCW course is a good idea anyways. You can learn alot in the class if tought by the right people.

Didnt make sense to me either. Just caught me off guard when he gave me that suggestion. Thanks for the website.
If you had a CCW and a gun on you, can you shoot out the guys tire(s) when he tries to flee the scene?
Otherwise, it doesn't matter if the guy flees, what are you supposed to do?
HOW would having that with you help if the guy took off?
I'm confused on why he would suggest it. Maybe protection at an accident scene, but if the guy bails, it doesn't do you any good.

Well yes, I guess you could, and then go to jail. ;)
I got my CCW at the Ben Avery shooting range. Not the cheapest, but I like the central location, and I was very pleased with the instructor.
I think what the officer was trying to say was having a gun handy, on you, could save your life, should a Life Threatening situation arise.
WildBill and others, will probably chime in here, but it's my understanding that if you feel your life is in danger, then you are within your right to protect yourself. The instructor that taught our class told us, to the effect, don't shoot, unless there is no other way out of the situation.
To clarify, this was with regards to a burglar in ones home, better to let him run, than having to go to court to prove you made the right judgement call, when you decided to shoot the BG.

Not doubting you but...I have a real hard time with a DPS Officer out of the blue said "get a CCW". Are you sure you weren't carrying on about how scared you were and asked something about protecting yourself??? I've yet to meet on that would be so cavalier as to make a "go get a gun" remark to a citizen; but if what you say is totally in context, I guess there is one.
That point a side, you can't shoot someone over a property crime (hitting your car or leaving the scene...YOU MUST BE IN FEAR FOR YOUR LIFE OR SERIOUS BODILY INJURY. Which means no shooting out tires :( Or shooting at a moving vehicle from your moving vehicle or shooting at a vehicle or person driving in away. You should be the one driving away or immediately to a populated area. It is not fleeing the scene for you to drive to a Police station or other safe place if you are in an accident and don't feel safe around the other person. Just call DPS or the Police and report what you are doing and why.
In addition there is a big difference between aggressive driving, road rage, and someone driving with their head up their a$$ that runs into you and flees the scene. Go to the DPS web site and you'll find the definitions of the first two items...and what DPS will tell a citizen to do in the situtation.
That said go get some training and lots of practice on what is and is not a deadly force situation.

It is quite possible that the officer made the comment because in a road rage incident it could have been possible that after the guy ran into you he may have jumped out and then tried to shoot or attack you with another deadly weapon.. like even a bat... at this point in time you would be within your right to defend yourself. and a ccw just makes it a little easier to defend to the arriving officer espesially if you make sure that YOU are the one to dial 911 after shooting the SOB!

An officer is a citizen too. Most aren't any more proficient in the use of a pistol than a tyical gun owner.
FWIW, I prefer the 3S method... shoot, shovel, shut-up.
Arizona is a big expansive desert for chissakes, ya don't gotta tell everyone about each person ya pop. [:p]
In all honesty, I calmed down substantially after getting the CCW. I started realizing which situations were potentially bad, and proactively avoided those.
Lastly, the CCW can't hurt for establishing credibility for yourself when there's conflicting reports of what happened. It might not do anything, but it won't hurt.
[u]Everyone</u> should have a shovel in their truck. ;)

Glad to see other people's typing skills are getting as bad as mine [:p]
Skip the shovel...lets fill in some of these abandoned mines :D
Yes, it was an "Out of the blue comment" by the officer. The officer was probably my age (mid 30's). He asked if I felt threatened, I said no. The guy rammed me in the rear 1/4 panel and spun me out across all 4 lanes. He never got out, just slowed next to me on the shoulder never making eye contact and fled the scene. Definitely not a life or death situation-thats why I felt the comment was out of place. Granted, if we were in the boonies, things might have been different. I guess with all the ATV riding we do and all the areas we travel to it should be a good idea to get a pistol. As for the training center, thanks for the info.
Scottsdale Community College offers a CCW class.

I have a ccw myself and think its a cool thing to have. I can have a gun anywhere in my car or truck and it wont ever be in question. Often the legality of weapon location within a vehicle is being misinterpret by both officiers and courts of law.
In addition to self-defense on the matter, you must always be careful where you bullet is going after you shoot a person. I have a gun that will go thru three walls, being a 44 magnum. If I was ever to be in a situation where I had to defend myself, I would have to be careful about what is on the other side of those 3 walls before shooting. Just another angle of the ccw's responsibility....

"cool thing to have"? Why does this phrase concern me? Z with a .44 doesn't allow me much comfort, either.;)

Dirty Zhvonte....
BTW, specifically how do you get your gun to go through three walls?
I flung my Glock as hard as I could and it only made a dent in one wall?

Dang it daisy... you beat me to the punch![:p] (But I'll even add to it)
I even tried my SKS rifle, and was able to get it to puncture the dry wall!:D

Finally, a good use for a Glock!;)
Try Caswells in Mesa for the permit. In door range and they offer the classes for CCW.

Glazer Saftey Slugs. (Spelling?) If your concerned about going through walls, as everybody should, this is your best option. When I owned my condo I knew for a fact that i would have any issues hitting my target but once it hits something, it was just going to keep on going through things until it stopped. So now I keep 16 of these bad boys in my 9mm when I'm at home but I also keep 2 other mags right next to it full of Hydrashocks.....just in case I need to get nasty :)
