Gotta share this (long winded)story with everyone:
Okay, those of you who where at Camp Wood this weekend know that I blew the bottom end out of my RM (three weeks after putting $1200.00 into rebuilding the motor) which will be about $800.00 to fix . So on the way to taking my bike to my buddies shop to get fixed, my Bro' and I stopped by Bell Road Honda (car dealership) to look at the new Cooper Mini's they are importing from england. The sales manager sees a pickup with a dirt bike in it and runs out and says "Hey guys, I have a bike inside that I took on trade for a civic. You guys want to have a look at it?" Being that we have some time to burn, we go inside and lo and behold, there chained to a post is a '01 YZ426F!!! He asks if I am interested in buying it and I reply "Yeah, I'll give you $2500.00 cash for it right now". To my surprise he said "Okay, it's yours!" I couldn't believe it, those things sell for a little over four grand in decent shape and this one has very low hours. After title and tax I STOLE it for right at $2,800.00! Kinda nice to be on the back end of a screwin' in a car dealership for once in my life.
So, after I put new Dunlaps, a triple clamp and mount for my Scott's and a IMS tank, I will be ass deep in a fresh thumper to the tune of $3400.00!
Saturday: Blown up RM bottom end.
Monday: $2800.00 YZ426.
Guess God givith' and God taketh'away! Halaluya my Brothas'!!! Let us ride!

Okay....what is the trick for starting this blue contraption. I put it at false TDC (to where it don't kick no mo'), pulled the compression release, pushed kick starter down 1/4", let er' back up to the top, took a big stab at it....and nothin'. Repeated 50-100 times. Dude, I was sweatin' like a fat man in saranwrap that rode a 45 minute moto on a queer water buffalo. My Bro at least got it to start a few times, Our dad already said if I can't start it, I have to give it to him. Just about thought about sarcificing the neighbor's cat to the god's of internal combustion.
I need help startin' Blue Thunder. Will you start my bike at Prescott in two weeks?

Damn, El-Gato made it look easy in Prescott. I feel your pain, I took a buds out and stalled it on the back side of the main track at ET. My a$$ pushed it back, I can't start one of those tempermental b!tchez.

I have to laugh, only because everyone I know with a YZ426 or a WR426, has one heck of a time starting it! They seem like they are horribly tempermental. We were riding this weekend with some buddies (WR426,YZ426,XR600 and my CR250), and due to an evasive manuever, the WR stalled. We spent 20min in that washbed trying to get that thing to fire. I feel your pain man!

Quit stabin it, stroke it and it will start.
I see lots of 2 stroke guys giving a 4 stroke engine those quick short jabbing kicks, that will get a 2 stroke spinning but it will not generate enough inertia (sp) to spin up all the extra hardware in a 4 stroke. Give it a long smooth stroking kick, you'll be amazed at how easy it starts. Works on my pig :)
If you give up on it, I'll give ya three grand for it.

First off, congratulations on you move up to the "Big Boy Class". No more bumble bee in the helmet 250.
Secondly, please don't sacrifise any cats. We're a dying breed.
Starting these beast's is an art. It takes a lot of practice before you can do it "Easily", and I use that word lightly.
The principal off the 4-stroke is that it MUST be on TDC before you can kick it over.
1. Pull in the compression relief. Kick it over a few times while holding it in. Kinda primes it.
2. Let off on the compression relief and kick it over slowely until the kicker stops. You are about 3/4 of the way from TDC. (compression lock)
3. Pull the compression relief in, and kick the kicker down about an inch, ONLY AN INCH. You have now put the piston on TDC on the compression stroke. Allow the kicker to return all the way up to the top, and kick it over.
The harder you kick it the less likely it is to start. Just a nice firm stroke of the kicker.
When you were trying to start my bike last weekend, you were kicking it to much (more than an inch) on above step three. You were actually taking it past TDC before trying to start it. You can actually feel the piston go past TDC if you know what to feel for.
It took me a while to get confortable with starting the beast. Just remember, if you ever kill the engine while getting it on, you're screwed. Pull the compression relief in, pull out the hot start, kick it over about 20-30 times before letting up on the compression relief. That flushes out all the unburnt fuel out of the cylinder and head.
GOOD LUCK.

Please, let's not talk about yellow bikes for a little while, okay? That is kind of a sore spot with me right now, and once that button unleashes 54 horspower in a sub- 240 pound blue chasis, I will be more than happy to push it.
If it was yellow you could push the button.
Secondly, I took an impromtu fourstroke class at the The Pit tonight from Donny while he was freshinin' up my rear sneaker, think I have a feel for it, even started Blue Thunder 3 times in a row. Makes me feel better, being able to start my own bike and all .

How many miles (average, rough estimate) is the stock tank good for?

I would say 30/40 miles. Those thumpers get good mileage. Of course it matters where, when and how. You might only get 20/25 in mexico.

For as much sh** that I get from the Kawi & Yamaha dudes about my XR, starting it is something that is a non-event. Hot, cold, trail...whatever, it always fires right up. neWRiver has WR250 and I have seen him have a few challenges trying to spank his girl when she's quits out on the trails. Maybe my XR ain't so bad afterall

Hey, now!
I've certainly faced my share of challenges in starting thumpers, including my own WR250F. I don't think it is fair to single out the yamahas in this respect. My brother's XR has demonstrated an equal ability to frustrate the most earnest starting attempts at times. And if I recall correctly, there was a certain other XR that I have ridden with out at Pima & Dynamite that also showed its owner how it can at times require a prolonged "spanking".
Aside from a thorough knowledge of the "drill", I have found that jetting can play an important part in ease of starting. Lately (including this past weekend) my bike has been a one kicker all day long.
I don't have near the troubles starting my bike that I had as a new owner. For the most part it is not an issue any more, but that is not to say that I believe I will never have hard starting issues with this bike again. The only real guarantee for easy starts (no matter what brand you ride) is a magic button. My next WR will have one. :)
BTW, I think XRs are great bikes.

Bad valve adjustment will also make for a stuburn starter. I had a had time starting mine for the longest time until Ben adjusted the valves. Then no more problems.

Also an excellent point.
I just went through this on my bike. Absolutely would not kick start when cold one day. I bump started and was able to kick it all day after it was warmed up. As soon as the bike cooled down again, it would not light with the kick starter. One of my intake valves had tightened up and after shimming it back to specs I had a one kick starter again. Note that the tight valve was also accompanied by a noticable loss of compression when cold.

I will probably ride the 426 till' the new WR450 comes out....I couldn't pass on a $2800 low-hour 426! My bro is already saying that this 426 is his in december when the '03 iron is out.
Watch out Mom! both boys racing again we have a very small rivalry thing between us, nothing too serious (ER attendants opinion's may differ slightly).

I have rarely had ANY problems firing' up that XR....cold, hot whatever. Maybe if I took a spill and flooded it...it might require a little time dry up, but she always starts without much trouble. As I had mentioned, the WR will probably be my next bike as it seems a little more nimble and has a racier edge to it...until then...I will continue to enjoy the XR.
