It's time once again for the season-opener of the OHV Poker Fun Runs.

THIS IS NOT A RACE!... **EVENT WILL BE RUN RAIN OR SHINE**

DATE: November 15/16, 2003

LOCATION: Rolls OHV Area, near 4-Peaks & Saguaro Lake. The Pobrecito Parking Lot/Stewart Mountain Group Site will be the headquarters for our Registration & Scoring Tent (see map at bottom)

TIME: Registration is open from 8am - 11:45, Saturday & Sunday. Courses are open to riders from 9am - Noon. All courses close to riders at Noon so that our Sweep patrol can ensure everyone gets back safely.

TYPES of VEHICLES ALLOWED: Dirtbikes, quads, 3-wheelers and lifted all-terrain carts. Sorry, no Jeeps, trucks, sandrails or any other full-sized off-highway units.

REQUIREMENTS: Spark arrestor mufflers & helmets are mandatory for all participants. No "double-riding" unless your vehicle was designed by the manufacturer to safely carry a second passenger and has a second set of factory-installed footpegs.

All participants must sign an "Acknowledgement of Risks" form and have valid medical insurance coverage. We won't be asking to see your insurance card, but you do still need to have coverage. A parent or legal guardian must sign for all children under the age of 18. A parent or legal guardian must ride with any child under the age of 18 at all times.

Bring your own ATV, DRINKING WATER gas, tools, spare parts (such as tire repair materials), respect for nature/other riders and common sense!

COURSE INFO: (3) Riding Loops total. The Short Loop will be about 10 miles and basically just cuts the Intermediate Loop short. The Intermediate Loop is aprox. 15-20 miles, and the Advanced Loop is about 25-45 miles. The Short Loop and the Intermediate loop are both suitable for most experienced, group-riding families.

NOTE: Because there is a considerable amount of loose sand, rocks and hills in this riding area, younger riders on 50cc or smaller minibikes may have trouble. One good example of a vehicle that might have problems in the sandy sections would be a Honda XR-50.

PRIZES: $100 & $50 cash-value dealership coupons for High/Low poker hands (both days). Plus, lots of great raffle items. Prizes will be drawn at 2pm both days (sooner if our Sweep Riders can get everyone safely off the courses!)

PARKING: There are (2) parking choices; FREE parking out on the dirt trail system, or $4 per day parking in a private, paved lot (no electric, water or other RV hookups onsite).

NOTE: For convenience purposes, we suggest parking oversized toy haulers & motor homes in the $4 per day paved lot. You are responsible for having a valid parking lot fee envelope stub at all times and for paying the $4 per day fee to the Tonto National Forest.

USE OF THE PAVED LOT IS A PRIVILEGE NOT A RIGHT. THE LOT IS BEING MADE AVAILABLE TO THE PROMOTERS VIA A SPECIAL-USE PERMIT. NO ATV RIDING IN THE PAVED LOT EXCEPT TO GET BACK AND FORTH TO YOUR PARKED VEHICLE! ANYONE CAUGHT OPERATING AN ATV IN AN UNSAFE MANNER WILL BE ESCORTED OFF THE PREMISES! PIT SPEEDS ARE 5MPH OR LESS AT ALL TIMES!

ENTRY FEE: Adults $25, Kids 12yrs & under $10 (cash or check, no credit cards)

Fee includes entry, clearly marked Loop routes, trailside BBQ lunch, chance to win top prizes, and a raffle ticket for other great prize drawings (Paved lot $4 parking fee not included)

BATHROOMS: Blockhouse port-a-johns are available onsite. There is no running water or RV hookups of any kind.

CAMPING: Overnight camping is allowed either in the $4 per day paved lot or out on the trail system. All camping is considered "primitive." Campfires are ok, but must be contained in an approved burning device (such as those screened-in metal units on wheels available at any home improvement store). There is no firewood available for gathering - bring your own wood!

We may have to do this one! We should have our New GEAR BOX by then it could be the perfect warm-up for Turkey Week. Jeff thanx for the the Heads up.

Can you tell us a little bit about the loops you have planned, as we would like our small children to do this event.

All R/A members are encourage to show thier support by wearing your t-shirts. If you don't have an R/A T-shirt you can get them at the R/A store. Arrangements can be made to have them delivered to you at the Poker Run. We look forward to seeing all of you there.

Hey Jack,

There are basically 3 loops on this course. The shortest would be about 10 miles and is really just cutting the Intermediate Course short. Both the Intermediate and Advanced courses have sections of sand wash which is why we dont recommend 50cc or less engines. Small quads will do fine. The majority of the courses are hardpack dirt with only 1 eroded hill to go down. That is unless you dare to take on "Hero Hill" on the Advanced loop.:D Otherwise just lots of fun rolly polly type jeeps roads.

Bring out the kids, you and them will have a good time.

Does anyone know if we need to bring our health insurance cards?
Could probably did them up if needed.
Thanks

Hey Tecate.

You should ALWAYS carry your health insurance card with you, whether you are riding or not.

The Promoters will not be asking for proof of health coverage - we just want you to have a safe and fun experience.

Actually, some desert racers routinely tape their health insurance card to the outside of their helmets. This little step could save your life if you get in an accident and/or have special medical or drug requirements.

Ride safe. Ride smart.

I like the idea of doing this one.....

JeffL, I never done one of these kind of poker run before. These longer loops, the one close to 25-45 miles, are there going to be sweeps and checkpoints for safety reasons? I want to do a 2-3 laps of that long one, but not if I am gonna be like the only one out there riding it...

I have no limitations, only my quad has limitations......

What dealerships are these cash-value coupons for?

JeffL
10/28/03, 9:13 PM
Hey folks,

I will try to answer 3 of your recent questions in this reply...

Q1: by Zhvonte: When is it?
A: November 15/16, 2003. We put the date in the subject header, but forgot to include it in the body of the message. Thanks for pointing that out - all fixed now!

Q2: by Zhvonte: Will there be Sweep Riders?
A: Yes, there are 4-6 Sweep Riders who will be patrolling ALL the courses all day long. Our Sweep Riders have bright orange "SWEEP" stickers on their front numberplates.

Q: by mlbelden: What/where is Hero Hill?
A: Go to http://www.ohvfunruns.com/Videos.htm and click on the mpeg movie. There are highlights of several riders who didn't make it up the first try...

Q: by GoneRidin: What dealerships are these cash-value coupons for?
A: The $100/$50 cash-value coupons for the High/Low poker hand winners are good at any Arizona Motorsports Group Dealership. The coupons may be used for parts, accessories, service or anything else you can think of.

Don and I will try to answer all your questions in a timely manner...

Hey Pitcher.

Congrats on that High Hand, cash-value coupon winner!

Although I've personally never won that much $$$ from a dealer, I'll bet it's nice to walk into a shop knowing you've got prize dollars to spend that you earned by riding... Hopefully, there's more good luck ahead for you and your family.

We appreciate the kind words and repeat attendance.

If anyone from the North Scottsdale area (Scottsdale Rd and Pinnacle Peak) is heading down for this event and has room for me and my KDX, I'd be happy to buy breakfast/lunch and gas in exchange for a ride. My regular riding buddy (who has the trailer hitch) has plans that weekend. :(

Free t-shirts will be given out to a limited number of poker run participants each day at our Registration Tent. If you are riding both Saturday & Sunday, or if you plan to attend future scheduled events, we respectfully ask that you limit yourself to one free t-shirt per season.

You can check out our new '03-'04 t-shirt design at http://www.ohvfunruns.com/t-shirts.htm

a Hip Tip for Poker Run Newbies

The early morning & nighttime temperatures are pretty c-c-c-cold out at the Four Peaks area! If you are planning on camping over the weekend, bring plenty of warm clothes, firewood, hot chocolate and cozy blankets. Ironically, after the sun comes up you'll probably end up wearing shorts. Also, there are no onsite gas/parts or other vendors to buy stuff you might have forgot, and the closest basic convenience store is 3-4 miles away...

For you "Hero Hill" fans this year we will be going down the hill. We decided to change the course a little to keep it interesting and this is one of the changes. Should be alot of fun with the holes at the top. All you throttle jockeys get your brakes ready :D

The online map in this post has been updated to show the relative location of the infamous "Hero Hill" (Trail #1813). I would also like to add that there are several comparable Hero Hills out on the Advanced Loop (34 miles total).

Downhills are not too much worry if you keep your weight back and go easy on either of the brakes. Sometimes a bit of throttle helps you float over a downhill stairstep ledge easier. Just be prepared for the next one!

If anyone has the time and ability to capture some new video footage out on the trails, we would be most grateful. Pictures are appreciated as well.

Hero hill ain't nuthin special. I never even knew it had a name and it's not really worthy of one. I've seen Blasters shoot right up it, I could probably do it on a mountain bike, let alone my CR500. The guys I ride with regularly climb it side-by-side. I actually fear going down it more than going up.

There's a much tougher hill at Catfish Cove right next to the lake.

Thanks for showing where that is. My 14-yr-old and I were on that a couple of weeks ago and wondered if that was it. Going down was no problem, although we did watch several riders who no doubt had the pucker factor up to about 110% coming down after us. That was fun!

Thanks,

I usually spend 2.5hrs riding to travel ~30 miles out there if I go alone. IF I'm in a group I have to add significant time for BSing.

Estimated time for an "average" rider to complete our Poker Run Loops:

Short Loop (10 to 12 miles) - 45 minutes to 1 hour

Intermediate Loop (15 to 20 miles) - 1 hour

Advanced Loop (34 miles) - 1 & 1/2 hours

These estimates do not take into account any trailside repairs, BS-ing with others, picture taking or other activities.

Enjoy...

Does anyone have a GPS route file that they can share for either the intermediate or advanced course?

We went out there last Sunday, got paid our registration fee and got all geared up only to find out that my friends bike would not start (thanks for the refund!). Anyway, the problem seems to be solved now so we were going to head out and try it this Sunday.

If you have a route file, you can email it to me at corbing@yahoo.com or attach it to a post in this thread (if that's allowed?). Thanks!
