I just picked up a 2001 CR500 that came with a new paddle tire and I want to take it to the Glamis Dunes with my buddies.
Where in town is the best deal on the flag/whip setup? Is there a way to mount it that doesn't require drilling my rear fender?
I've heard rumors of an air filter sock/tear-off thingy that is commonly used. Where can I get some?
What other stuff do I need to minimize wear to the bike and improve safety for myself?
I'm planning on camping off Gecko Rd. on Nov. 7-8 Thursday eve. through Saturday morning. Any other advice? First time duner, experienced rider otherwise.

Most bike shops carry whips. I use the bracket that attaches to the bikes rear axle nut. It replaces the washer for the nut and has a hole to mount the whip in. I got that and a whip out at the dunes for $30 I think. Local shops might be cheaper. As for your air filter, any Parts Unlimited dealer (most local shops) sell the filter skins. I don't use them but it's not a bad idea. Just make sure your filter is freshly cleaned and oiled before you go.

I use the axle mount bracket also... but I did drill a small hole in my rear fender to zip tie the whip up... when you reach speed the flag lays flat and does you no good. I'd rather have a small hole in my fender than a big hole in my head from some rail running me down.

Ken250r here, funny I have a 01 CR500 as well, and the best way to mount your flag is to mount on the axle nut. Found my set up at Glamis. They seem to have good prices for what you need. As for your bike, keep the air filter clean. If you plan on riding alot it is a good idea to have a spare filter oiled and in a plastic bag and change it on the long weekends. You can clean the filters when you are home. Don't use and sticky lubes on your chain, it will only attract sand into the setup, I try to use WD40 when in the dunes.
Ken, I've heard that tip before (about the wd-40 on your chain) It sounds like a good bet. Do you do this regularly while out there or just before you go.[:p]

Hey DC....ShanMan here. It looks like we may venture out to Glamis (Gecko to be specific) that weekend as well as the weekend after. Do you want to try and hook up while we are both there. Maybe we could meet in front of the Glamis Store about 8am or so? Let me know what sounds good. FYI: we should be arriving Friday (7th) night...not sure when just yet. PM me here or on CR500 Riders.
