Okay, so my buddy got drawn for elk, so the Kaibab trip is out. I'm going up to 6A instead to see if I can find a deer for the early archery. It looks like a descent unit with both Whitetail and Mulies, but I've never set foot in 6A before.

I'm doing some topo scouting and the transition areas around Walker Mountain look good on the computer, but I've yet to scout it on foot. Now, I'm not asking for anybodys honeyhole or anything like that, but is anyone familiar enough with the unit to maybe point me in a direction? The promise of shared meat and beers if the hunt is successful should be anticipated and expected...

I have seen lots of elk up high in 6a, a ranger told me that the elk have pushed the deer down into the lower parts of 6a. I know that is not real specific, but may help you start.

Check out the 6A Unit Report on the Arizona Game and Fish website. It should give you a place to start. :)

If the hunt is late in the year a lot of the elk will have moved south down toward Apache Maid off of the Stoneman Lake Road. ;)

Also check out this site and perform some searches in various catagories for 6A elk. :)

There is deer in there... Last November durring our Elk hunt we came accross 3 bucks out in the open flats by Apache Maid LO. This past Easter my son and I spooked a huge 4 point buck off forest road 229D. Just this past weekend, a huge 5x5 Bull Elk ran accross the road in front of us while we were quading... I'm really starting to like 6A. :D

I got a deer and a elk out of 6A, its a pretty good area. There were elk walking past my camp all night long. You might take a look around Wet Beaver Creek I saw some nice bulls down there.

Thanks Slow Poke.

So, is it reasonable to expect the deer and elk to be hanging in the same areas? I, for some reason, assumed they would naturally seperate.

One of my buddies also mentioned Wet Beaver Creek. Not because he though it held game, but because he liked the name...[:p]

Hunt the area around Mormon Mountain. I have hunted their the last 3 years and have seen bucks every trip. Had two shots within 30minutes of one another 2 years ago.

Shot underneath the first time, and hit a tree brance the second time. Afterwards I found out that my bow had craked limbs again.

I was jsut campin up there a few weeks ago, and saw quite a few deer up there. We were just off the Stoneman lake turn off, a few miles in, north of the road. You should be able to find deer or elk in 6A just about anywhere.

Its a great area to hunt and ride. I hunt/camp/ride east of lake mary road and have seen deer and elk everytime out. I have even seen bobcats. Im a very recreational hunter so i havent taken anything yet but my time is coming. We alaways camp on FR 135D so look for the Flags and trailers and stop in and say hello. Going up on the 31st to be ready for the hunt this year.

Wow, from the way you and Hubcap are talking, I should be able to just fling an arrow and hit a deer or something...LOL...yea, I know it don't work that way. Hell, opening day they will be in hiding and noone will see anything for a couple of weeks...LOL

Oh, and welcome to RA Ric. Was going to say that in your other thread, but since you were kind enough to respond to mine, I thought I'd give ya a "Howdy!!!".

I have been hunting 6A for 20+ years, I really dont believe there is a bad spot in the whole unit. There are elk and deer throughout the unit. Alot of the "sweet" spots are over ran with people after opening morning. It seems that as of late, every inbread wacko E-hunter is in the above mentioned areas.( not referring to anyone on RA:)) Try going away from the roads, and people, thats what I do.

P.S. This unit has been E-beat up! Please PM the person asking, with specific info. Several years ago, I had a very well scouted elk hunt almost destroyed by a guy that put gps coordinates with pics on the net. Opening morning, there was about a hundred people around my camp. Several of whom turned me to this guys website. Two of the gps fixes were within 50 yards of my camp. Pleease use PM's.

Just to set your mind at ease there Dunenutt, I'm not going to be within miles and miles of any of the locations mentioned here. Everybody probably gave me good advice (including you), but scouting and circumstances led me in another direction on 6A.

P.S. - Personally, except for my camp buddies, I hope I don't see a soul for 5 days...that's how it is on my southern unit late hunt, and I love it.

Is it for the rifle season or bow. Bow season is going to be warmer so they will be high. The best bow area I have found is from stoneman lake road east to St. Mary lake rd. south to about Apache maid. There are a lot of great bowls with water and grassy areas w/ oaks all throughout that elevation. If it is rifle season, the area from Apache Maid (off of stoneman lake rd. south of Stonman lake, turn right instead of left at the T.) south to Cedar Flats and across to hwy 260. this is the honey hole for rifle. I know several guides that have pulled some monster bulls out of there and have put me on some big boys myself. Too bad I always seem to just not get into the right place at the right time for the right shot!!! lol
Dove season starts Friday. yeeeeehaaaaaaa a little shootin, and a little ridin, life is grand!

Yea, it's during the bow season. I got me a spot now kind of picked out. Went earlier this week and scouted it a bit after my hunting partner scouted it a couple weeks ago. Went ahead and hung a stand just in case I'm feeling lazy...

And yea, Dove coming up too. Going to see if a couple of my kids might be interested in that this year. Right now they are excited, but we'll see how they feel when the lead and feathers start flyin...LOL
