Do you have any idea about where, or what unit you want to hunt? Figuring that out is where you need to start. The Kaibab units are famous for their deer herds, and if you have a week to dedicate to the hunt, that is an area I would recommend.
After that, I would hit some of the free topo map sites -- www.topozone.com and terraserver.microsoft.com are 2 I use a lot, and narrow down your areas a bit more. Look for and mark areas you think may hold deer. People run straight to the water tanks, and they get crowded, so I avoid them. Look for areas that may serve as paths to waterholes or feeding and bedding areas.
After that, go out and do some scouting. Take the gps with you and test the areas you marked on the topo, then also mark some areas where you see sign. Maybe go back to the topo after that and look for similar areas.
I've only been doing this for a few years myself, but I've run into deer quite a bit. One of these days I'll actually get one...
I am looking for areas close to town mostly. Areas that I can run to for the evening sundown hunt. My work does not enable me to take off for a week. i will have a weekend or two here and there to actually hunt. I live north of carefree highway and 20th St. Near the beginning of the Tonto. Last year, while quail hunting, I saw a beautiful 4-point. Hoping I can run into him again.
