RA Members,

Your help is needed out at mile post 207. This is the Gold Canyon area out in Apache Junction. Take a look at the attached two messages. There are many volunteers needed on many different days. If you can give a few hours on any one of the days..please do so, it could make a huge difference in keeping this area alive and open. If you have any questions or want to volunteer please send Sandee an email at mccullen@cableaz.com and post back here that you have agreed to help. Riding Arizona needs to log a few volunteer hours on this project, so please help us out, let Sandee know you are with Riding Arizona and commit/show up to do a little labor and riding.

I NEED HELP AGAIN............. Below is a message from the Mesa office Game & Fish planner that we have been working with for 18 months in the planning and implimentation of the Desert Wells Riding Area in east valley. #'s 3,4,5 & 6 are the most urgent for volunteers but if we can get this project completed we don't have anything more on the horizon. We can PLAY for awhile.

A couple of hours from each of you would complete this project in no time at all............................... Please review the calendar and jobs needed and see if you can't find one day to help out.

History: The riding area at the M.P. 201 in Gold Canyon was closed due to EPA Dust issues and devistation of the land and ranchers tanks in this immediate area. 33,000 acres were closed at 201 and south along the CAP Canal. BUT........... 86,000 acres remained open and 200 miles of trails were signed for motorized recreation. There are three kiosks installed............ M.P. 207 off Hwy 60; M.P. 149 off Hwy 79; and Skyline Rd off Ironwood......... There are 11 entry gates into this area. Each gate and each kiosk will have a map of the area indicating the trails available to ride. There will be maps and brochures available at each gate for riders to keep.

The area along Ironwood Rd is closed......... both east and west to Meridian. The project refered to below is placing poles and cable along Meridian from just north of Elliott Rd to Skyline and then east back to Ironwood. The project on the 22nd incompasses all of the above including law enforcement writing citations for those cutting the fence and entering into closed lands.

PLEASE don't put this off on someone else........................ we need YOU!! Join your fellow club members for a morning of fun and WORK and finish off the day with a trail ride in the area or for 4x4's........... the MGCP area is just east of this area.

Please email me (mccullen@cableaz.com) with names, dates and hours you can volunteer.
Thanks, Sandee

Jeff, Sandee and Phil,
OK, heres the status of a variety of projects and issued on much of the Desert Wells Mutli-Use Area including the Meridian and Ironwood Fence Alignment projects. Some Work days are going to be difficult to coordinate because of existing Club commitments and the fact that some of the work dates are midweek. However, any assistance that you can provide as per the listings below would be greatly appreciated. I've included on site meetings and work days that I know of:

1. Chuck and I will be at a Skyline and Meridian for an On-Site Work Cable Barrier Planning Meeting at 10:00 AM Tuesday, November 4th to discuss final cable barrier details for the Meridian project including scope and position of cable barrier.

2. Troy Christiansen and I will install all 11 gate signs on Wednesday, November 5th starting 1000 am at Gate 1.

3. Jeff and Sandee will be installing numbered route signs the week November 3rd.

4. Post hole digging work on the Meridian Alignment will occur November 12th - 15th.
- AGFD bringing one auger and operator
- ASLD bringing one auger and operator (Bill Webster)
- CRG bringing one auger NO OPERATOR

We can help on the 15th if we can get the information. Tried again - here is more info, when Sandee gives me the exact time and place I will post that as well:

On the 15th the volunteers will be helping with putting the finishing trail numbers on the sign posts at M.P. 207 as well as finishing up with the gate signs that Game & Fish didn't get finished this week.

Starting on the 12th the Game & Fish will be digging post holes to put posts in that the guys, hopefully, can start pulling cable on the 15th.

Most of the 4x4's groups have an annual elections meeting that day so most of the volunteers will have to come from the ATV/Motorcycle groups. The 4x4's will be out on the 16th to work on the trail #'s...............

The 22nd and 23rd we need to have groups along Ironwood Rd handing out maps directing riders to the M.P. 207 area............ we will also have groups posted at the M.P. 204, 207, 149 and maybe 145 to hand out maps and sell Az State Rec Permits..................

I think Game & Fish are being very positive in feeling all the posts and cables will be up on the weekend of the 15th................ I'm guessing we'll need a crew to help finish that project also.

Hope this helps............... Sandee

Syreda,

The dates occur throughout the whole month of November, so if you can find some time...please help. Anything is better than nothing.

Here are the latest detail I received:
Jeff and I are planning on meeting at the Jack In The Box at M.P. 201 in Gold Canyon at 7:45 a.m. each day............. pull out at 8:00 a.m.

This is truly a "family affair"................ kids of all ages can help. Whether it be "cleaning the posts" for stickers or handing out maps................. Showing some of these yahoo riders our sport is truly a "family" sport may settle some of the "grey matter" between their ears................ IF there is any. To cut fences that have "NO MOTORIZED VEHICLES ALLOWED" or "CLOSED FOR DUST ABATEMENT" or "CLOSED FOR REHAB" is beyond my abilities!!!

On the 15th it will be Jeff Gursh (drives a white Explorer) at the meeting point. Most of the 4x4 group will be at the ASA4WDC quarterly meeting in Chandler. I'm sure we'll have things to do so I'm calendaring the 16th as well................ if we simply work at finishing the numbers on the trail signs!

Same time, same place on the 16th.................... I'm going to announce the 16th at the ASA4WDC meeting also.

THANKS for your help ................. see you in the field!

THANKS!!!!

Vince, Jeff and Mark, as well as Larry from Arizona Trail Riders put up the numbers for the trails. Without these numbers, the maps are pretty much useless. If you can't figure out where you are.... you can't figure out where you want to go..... Thanks a bunch guys!!

This weekend we will be doing more signing and greeting the OHV public to direct them to the Desert Wells OHV area. So it is important to get the signs done.

Contact Jeff Gursh or Sandee if you can help this coming weekend.

Enjoyed working with you guys, and Thanks for your patience!!

Hey - Jeff and Vince had a great time. We had planned to be there the next weekend with all of us and a few more - however - after jeff and Vince got home .....
Vince went out on his mountain bike and broke his neck - c2 and c3 - he is now in a halo brace for the next 3 months - we spent 10 days in the hospital. We are so bummed - have cancelled so many rides and the bikes have not moved. I am sure some of you could imagine the frustration for a 15 year old who is soo active to now be playing sony games all day - as his parents we are just glad he is here! We also are sooooo blessed - vince is alive and has no paralysis. He should have a full recovery, we find out the end of feb. if he has to have surgery - hopefully not. He expects to be on his motorcycle by July - the neurosurgeon agrees. However - the mountain bike is getting trashed!!! Really, it was an accident plain and simple - no equipment would of protected him. Please - keep us in your prayers and thoughts - we would appreciate it. ~ Vicky
