View Full Version : Dogs in the Dunes
Do the rangers enforce the "pets on leash" part of the ISDRA rules?
If my dog(s) is walking next to me or laying down in front of my trailer without a leash, will they really have a problem with that?

My last visit to the Dunes the BLM Rangers were out in FORCE. They seem to be more occupied with enforcing OHV laws (helmets, etc)& were concentrating on DUI no matter what you were riding or operating. Most of them are pretty cool BUT U never know [?] who is having a bad day. At the Prescott off-road race we were pretty friendly with a USFS Ranger & one of the guys even offered to jet his USFS issued KTM for the proper altitude. AFTER the race & everyone was leaving he wrote the same guy a citation for smoking outside of the RV :( He was only 2 feet out to say something to somebody & WHAM a $150.00 ticket [B)] YOU just never know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
NOTE - It had been raining hard & the smoking ban was lifted later the same day by USFS. [}:)]

Actually I didn't know there was a leash law at the dunes. Everyone tends to let their dogs run. Of course, every year someone loses their pet.
People on this forum are WAY more up to speed on the rules than anywhere else. Does everyone work in law enforcement?

We bring our dog to the dunes...her favorite activity is to run beside me as I take the kids out for a ride. Her paws are sore by the end of the day. We have never had a run in with the rangers about the dog not being on a leash. We do keep an eye on her so she's not bugging anyone. Just beware...the idiots camped next to you may lite off fireworks and spook the heck out of the dog. We almost lost a friends dog on one trip due to this.

Just like Wifey said -- Be aware the bone heads that seem to have to be amused with fire works ( any & all hours ) can be rough on pets --The fire works seem to be more each year... I don't think we will be taking our dog again after this last W/E -- fire works till 4 in the morning.... For an answer to your question - We have never had a ranger say a word about the dog. She is always right in camp with use or walking with use around the camp areas with no leash picking up trash ect...

Are fireworks legal at Buttercup???
You would think with the recent situations in CA (and here in AZ), law enforcement would be all over that.

I'm pretty sure fireworks are illegal in all of California...doesn't seem to stop those who shoot them off. We see mostly border Patrol and they don't seem too concerned with what we duners do. Just don't give the illegal immigrants a ride on the back of your quad...it's illegal to ride double;):D[^]

We've never been down there before. Are we better off leaving the dogs at home?

1) yes fireworks are illegal
2) aint nuttin to burn there, and they have bigger concerns on the big weekends liek DUI's etc
3)i have never ever seen anyone say anyhting about someone else dog be it ranger or camper....and it proly isnt a good idea to take your dog on a busy weekend...but should be fine on an off weekend

We bring our dog every time we go and yes Bailey is the one that got spooked by the fireworks. My fault for not being too attentive with the fireworks goin' off. She has never bolted before , but be sure we pay close attention to her at all times now. As far as the Rangers, they have never given us a hard time except one and that was to tell us about the leash law (Warning, no Citation). However, as stated by others, you never know when your gonna run into a ranger with an attitude:(.
PS We do tie a glow stick to Baileys collar at night just in case:D, that was how we were able to find her the time she decided to bolt.
"Are we gonna ride or what?"
"Come on, get up... That's nothin' a few screws won't fix!!"
BEAUTIFUL IDEA! I'm sure I can find Glow-Stiks to match the dogs:)
Thanks. It's not really a family vacation without the kids..:)

dang, I though I was the first one to think of the glow stick idea.... Saw these small ones at the store & first thought was that it could be attacted to dog collars for the dogs that can get spooked -- Without a big moon it's black has heck at night out there. Have had people loose a kid before, it gets so dark...
The small glow stick says it's good for 4-6 hrs I believe & are only a few inchs long. -- Cheap insurance to keep from have a lost dog.

Glow sticks good to tie to whips too

The group I go with typically has at least 3 dogs up to 5 dogs with them. Usually never a problem with the rangers and them NEVER being on a leash. However they are really good and stay really near camp.
The dog that gets spooked usually runs into the trailer and hides under a bunk when the "festivities" start.
