Nov. 1 was our first trip to the dunes. Returned home against everyones wishes. Rode the Rolls on Sun. My son said it best. "this sucks compared to yesterday at the dunes." Needless to say we are all hooked on the dunes.:D

There is something alluring about the Dunes[:p]. Our kids love it as much as my Wifey and I do.:D

Spending time learning to ride well in the dunes makes those once intimidating washes look and feel like a joke! I haven't mastered any of them yet, but it seems to me that cross training by riding the dunes, singletrack (desert or woods) and some MX is the hot ticket for developing total offroad riding skill.

Big mistake huh? Now your simple day riding turns into a 4-hour drive (one way). You need a nice trailer to camp in because you're not just out there for a few hours anymore. Riding in the sand requires more horsepower, so now you pump thousands of dollars into your machines. You need a bike for everyone, because watching someone else have that much fun just won't do.
Yep...happened to us five years ago. Now, unless it's a race, cruising down some dusty desert trail isn't enough.
Sorry...but welcome to the club.

Everyone told me that if I ever went to the Dunes it would be the single most expensive trip I ever made. Unfortunately I didn't understand what they meant at the time and went anyway. Now...after four modded quads, four sets of dune tires, additional gas cans, flags, lighted flags, digital camera, 2500HD Silverado, etc., etc., etc....I FINALLY get it...but it's too late to go back to "life before duning".

Brother, you aint kiddin' about the most expensive trip you'll ever take:D. But what's money for anyway if you can't spend it on time with family and friends;).
Speakin' of spendin' money, gotta go pick up the new trailer tomorrow. Out grew the old one and "had" to go buy a bigger one. Besides, with a bigger trailer you have room for more toys:):D[8D];)[:p].
See ya'll soon at the dunes.

Well as far as expense goes, We already had the four quads, just up graded to a chevy avalanch. Have a trailer that carries the quads and dirt bike, but now going to sell boat and buy an enclosed trailer. Just spent several shiney pennies on 3 sets of ITP Sand Stars.
By the way we went without paddles and I was still able to go anywhere even up comp at buttercup. I made several passes up the hill in camp area, I lost alot but I only lost by a quad to quad and a half length. I got beat out of the hole because I could not hook up. So are paddles really needed I know that the quads run at higher rpms. any help would be great. I would like to hook up with all of you at the dunes soon. going weekend before turkey day and my son and I are going on thanksgivng.

The last time I rode the dunes was the winter of 1991. I sold my bikes & got out of it until January of this year. A day hasn't gone by between 1991 to the present where I've not thought about the sand, it's that addictive. You are right, that first trail ride after the dunes is a real bummer. I've never experienced anything that addictive since I was a teeny in the late 60's.:D It's just as compelling and MORE adictive. After riding that first big bowl in 4th gear, I was hooked. My name is Jerry...and and and I'm a dunaholic...
Is being asymmetrical really so bad?
