I'm about to make the same decision. I think I an going to go with 8 cup SandSkate IIs or 8 cup Sandstars (the new ITP sand tires).

Use an 8 paddle.

I've had great luck with the Sheng Shin paddle tires. Cheap and wear for a long time.

If you can afford Scat Trak paddles, I'd order a set of 20x10x10 8-paddle haulers on Douglas .125 Blue-Label rims. High-performance tires for a high-performance machine.

Sand Sharks are a lower cost alternative. Stay with the light-weight rims.

I run a Skat Trak 10 blade on my CR500, and ran that same tire on my KX500 too.....awesome hook up! My riding partner runs an 8 blade Sand Shark on his CR250...it wears a bit faster, but does fine otherwise. Oh yeah, mine is an 18" but his is 19". I trhink the torque of the 450 can make use of a 10 blade personally.

Oops, the Yamaha alphabet soup got me.

YZ450F - 2-wheels
YFZ450 - 4-wheels

It's amazing what a difference moving one letter makes.

Sorry, wrong machine.

Sand stars on red labels. Light rims might accelerate faster but heavy rims take more abuse and keep the rim on the bead(sometimes).
Besides the sand stars are really light anyway.

I have a YZ450F, and have been to the dunes twice with this bike. I have used the cheng shin 8 paddle. It works well, but the 450's can take the 10 paddle. The 8 paddle likes to slide in the corners, and gets sketchy. I going to the 10 paddle for the Thanksgiving trip this years trip.
