Land disputes have forced Whiplash to change the course for the last race of the year.
Jay is in Mexico maping the new course now. It is rumored to be 138 miles. JK. It will be only 120 miles.

Oh man...I REALLY wanted to do Point-to-Point. It would have been my first one. I helped pit last year and it looked like a fun race.
Damn it!

That is really bad news... :( [V] One of the best parts of P to P is the first 25+ miles. What a bummer! Now, for the part about the map being available a week before the race... Don't get your hopes up. They tell us every year that we'll get maps the week prior to the race. When in fact, the only years this happened was 1999 and earlier. It goes like this...(hope they prove me wrong this time)
You get there the day before the race and you have to set up your pits and logistics the night before the race and if you arrive in the evening you really have to scramble to get set up. Sound familiar??? The course will invariably change the day before the race anyway and the maps may be obsolete. Sorry for the negativity but I've seen this same scenario year after year. No matter how this unfolds, Mexico is waaayyy cool and a great time. See you all there!

Mr. Feld as one in the know about such things as Mexico race mileage please help my aging brain remember what last May Rock to Rock was. Starting those pit logistics early - most of won't do 130 miles or 120 miles on one pit [V]. I'm wondering if they will run the same way (backwards) as May race [?] I'm with you though, a weekend in Mexico off road racing and sipping Hurricanes on the beach ' It's ALL GOOD :D. I know I'm losing it though because I'm "almost" looking forward to the WHOOP DEE DOO ROAD [:p]
Just a note for all you Racers that Fistfull # 624 went under the knife last Friday to surgically repair that damaged shoulder from Snowflake crash. He tryed to race Searchlight & Vulture and found out there was more damage than they thought. Anyway He's doing good & should be typing away soon BUT not riding for [?] :(

May's race was 85 miles, and only one stop at La Pinta beach for most. You should be able to make it on 2 stops with that new desert tank:D. Once the map gets out we will be able to tell though. Hopfully it works out to be every 50 miles in between stops.[:0]

I heard it's been bumped to a 200 mile race on a 1 mile course now. 200 laps of sandy whoops around the Oasis! The catch is, you have to stop every 10 laps and chug a tecate. The last racer with clean underwear wins! [:p]

Thanks Ben,
I too needed a reminder as to the distance of the last Rock / Rock race. Yes, 85 miles was the count I remember. I did only one pit at La Pinta beach.
Mr. Parks, remember to slow down for that sandy double up at the beginning of Gopher Hole Alley! We went up for some serious air time over that particular obstacle... I know I came close to eating $@#t on the landing. How 'bout you???
Everyone needs to remember that the courses are stated to be longer than they actually are. I think this helps to keep some people from running out of gas by encouraging more stops. (even though every year people still run out).
I do remember the P to P in '99'. It was my first race in 16 years and finished in the top 10. That's where I met Mark O (Great Guy). Tecate and Coke were at the finish line with the beds of trucks filled with soda and beer for all of the finishers and there was someone from a resort passing hats to the top 10 finishers. I didn't know anyone there but made plenty of friends by the end of the evening. JJ's was ccccoooooolllllddd and windy that night. As it probably will be this year too. Bring a jacket and something warm to sit on or next to.

From the stories I've heard I do believe that is the same area that got Jim Chapman. I know I had a pretty seriuos pucker going on through there. It wasn't the first mound that got me it was the second one. I rode the front wheel for about 50 feet before the rear decided to drop, and then I went another 50 feet before I opened my eyes back up. I was following right behind TJ and he did the smart thing and slowed a little and went through there like it was a walk in the park so I thought I could make up some time on him while he was being conservative. BUT he got a pretty big lead built back up on me as I was meandering through the sand trying to regain control. That old dude is pretty smart that way.;)

I'm pretty sure I did that race, but I never got any free beer!!!!! Missed the boat on that one. I do remember getting a hat at one of those races though.

Oh yea, I remember. That whoop double, double triple thing in blinding white sand has scared me a few times.
I have a map around here somewhere from the last r to r If i can find it i will scan and post. They usually only make suttle changes and run it backwards now and then. I hope they run the section next to the highway. It is 8 miles of great video if you can get someone to chase ya in a car.
In 2000 my wife rode in the car. Until then she thought we maybe did 50mph. Its funny on the video, The driver says "wow, we are doing 90mph. All you hear is WHAT!! How fast!!" Since then(and parker 01) she hates me racing.
The good news is she realizes now that doing 100 on the freeway in a car aint s**t.[}:)]

T.J's happy about the change. PtoP has been his achles heel. He's raced it a hand full of times and has only finished it once, and that was with a front flat for 90 of the 100 miles.

yes...i've finished that dawm race 2 out of 7 tries..1st time i finished on a carreer ending broken wrist that required 2-surgeries...2nd time on 90 mile front flat and then 5-mechanical dnfs....anyways as i've matured we'll say over the years..its just seems alot easier to go down and get settled in rocky pt. whether its camping or hoteling and tear it up from the oasis... i do agree that 1st 20-25 miles of the pt. to pt. is good stuff..but i do remember..somebody help me here..i think it was 00' or 01' that the rock to rock went all the way up to the "industrial park" and back down through the mtns. which i thought was pretty long halfway challenging course like the ol' pt. to pt....maybe jay will do somethin' like that.[?] quote:Originally posted by El Gato

Yippie!! my new rear wheels and tires came in today...hopefully i can make it through the entire race without a flat this time!! I went with the itp t-9 pro series beadlocks with inner reinforcement rings 9x9, and kenda klaw tires 22x11x9. they look beefy. i went with the good rims that should last for years, and mediocre priced tires.

T.J., The last super long PtoP race was in 98'and it was a team race. 180 miles of whoops as I recall. That would be super cool this year.
Fisk, you're right we may not make it down for the PtoP race after getting our bank accounts milked by the Baja-1000, but then again you never know. I've done crazier things. In the 2001 PtoP race me and Raper slept in the back of my truck in Sonoyta and left to come home right after the finish saturday. We ate nothing but tacos and chips. That sure was tough loading up and driving home as every one else was gearing up to go partying all night.
Any good samaritans out there with room for a couple sleeping bags on their camp trailer floor?????

Where I work right now, there was a fellow employee that I became friends with, and go riding together when we can. It turns out back in 85' he raced the Baja 1000 with a friend of my dads, and my dad was there to pit him.[:0] Soon or later a fellow motorcycle racer knows someone you know, that is cool part about this sport.

NO!!! I actually put the finishing touches on my front wheel pre-running the Baja-1000. You can almost see the tube through the "taco" shaped front rim, and it has a hard time spinning between the fork legs. I actually started pulling the bike apart and going through it all in preperation for next year. I have a pretty big christmas list. Both forks and the shock are leaking, I need rims, an exhaust system, brake pads, plastic, clutch, etc.... The engine is in good shape but I need to go through everything else especially the bushings and bearings in the suspension components.
I've raced this race a hundred times and I'm not in the points anymore since I missed so many this year. I can't justify the cost this month.
