View Full Version : Snowflake weekend
It's early but why not get a plan together right?
Anyone feel like splitting the gas bill and taking one truck up?
I'm not riding with you Gato - you drive a gas black hole
My truck is available, extended cab and can fit a couple bikes, or a quad and a bike. That leaves the back seat for camping stuff, gear, and beer - jkc bait, that is .

Let's make a common pit. My Bro' lives about 45 minutes from the track and can go rope off a spot for us early in the week (car and truck racers start grabbing space on about Tuesday) but we will have to have a pretty good count on how many people and what equipment we will have to have room for. Remember, we always pick our pit location based on racing and a quick pit, not location, lack of dust or track view. Luckily, the SF race doesn't have much of any of the last things to compete against pitting for a quick pit.
On a side note, I am fully prepared to host the Sunday night "after race party".

Hey guys it looks like we're going to come out and race. We're sending the bike off to randy to do the suspension, and Im in the process of putting on the other parts. The only thing I don't think I can get is a IMS tank. Those f ing things are too expensive. what is the down side of racing the stock tank. Will I make it around? I'll be pist if I run out of gas. If you guys are going to have a group pit out there can I pit with you guys. Since it's going to be our first time out I'll need some help and suggestions. It would be nice to have one or two of you guys as mentors out there so I don't make any mistakes. Any help I can get will be greatly appreciated.
I'm planning on racing (beginners) too. If you can, please grab some space for me.

Try Clarke for your tank. IMS is just a name, I've had both and prefer the Clarke. It didn't split like my IMS did.

I just looked at the clarke tank. It's less expensive, but is looks more bulky than the ims. The tank looks like it moves the riding position farther back than the ims. Decisions......Decisions......Decisions
Mine is taller, but slimmer than either the stocker OR the IMS, it doesn't come as far back as the IMS did, and it comes back the same distance as the stocker did. It also holds more fuel than either the IMS or the stocker.
I would imagine on your MX'er that you'll be giving up the ability to slide way close to the front and plant the tire for turning, but then again you're not on a MX track.

How difficult would it be to race with the stock tank? Is there any chance that you can still be competitive with the stock tank? Im really looking foreward to learning from you guys. save us a spot.
You'll be pitting every lap for fuel but the experience is what you're after anyways. Come race the stocker and if you run out, so what the chasers will gather you up and bring you back in.

What do you ride?
The race is (4) 25 mile loops unless it has been changed. I have never seen Jay make a race longer, just shorter.
A stock 250 would be cutting it close to pit every lap. A 4-stroke will make it easily on a stock tank.
I only have to pit once after the second lap. You would have to pit three times with a stock tank.
It takes about 30 seconds to get gas with a good fueler, So you would be saving about a minute total if you bought a desert tank.
Is it worth it? Are you racing for money or points?
Desert tanks are good to have especially if you are doing a series and the competition is close like the class I'm in. For only one race a year, It's your call.
As far as what brand. I have been sponsored by IMS for 4 years, and that is all I've ever used. I hear the Clarkes don't always bolt up easily. I have long legs so a wider tank doesn't effect me hardly at all. The IMS tank I had on my KX-500 was pretty wide though. I could definately tell when I got on that bike.
Another thing I don't like about the Clarke tanks is that they are taller. It's almost like the gas cap is going to hit you in the throat if you hit something real hard. They also hang real low down towards the engine. Makes a plug change almost impossible

I noticed the same thing with the clarke pictures for my yz250. It looks like the neck of the tank is above the tripple clamp. I like the overall slimness of the ims tank. I think the ims tank better accomodates a big tall rider like myself. If I got a ims tank I probably wouldn't be able to afford a quick fuel gas can, so how difficult is it to fill a desert tank with the normal fuel cans.
El Gato
07/31/02, 12:04 PM
It's not hard, you just have to take off the cap, fill, then put it back on. Add a few seconds to your pit stops. Make sure the vent cap is open on your gas can though.
Come find me at the race. I will show you what I use. It is a quick fill system developed by John Strong in Tempe. He calls it the "Fast Cap", and you can put the probe in your conventional gas can. He also has an adapter for the old style Acerbis Quick dump can. He was selling them in the IMS catalog for a while. It is a fraction of the cost of a quick fill system. The cap actually screws right in place of the regular gas cap on your bike.
Here is Ben from Ben's Cycle Works using this system in the 2000 Cinder-100

Will... if you are looking for a desert tank, you should check on EBAY! They usually have quite a few on there. I am thinking about getting one for my 125, as well.
Going to try my hardest to get up there and race Snowflake! JKSEIZE has convinced me. Now I just need to convince the folks! If not racing I'll be there to support the RA guys!!

Now let's talk gearing:
Will, save your money for some new sprockets (don't buy a tank, you will make a lap with 1/4 gallon of fuel left to spare and we will pit you twice. Figure about a 10 second pit)
I suggest you buy a 15/48 sprocket combo for your YZ, that will give you about 85-90 for the long straights and leaves you enough bottom for tight sections, which are only a few miles total.
Kevin: You may want to throw a one tooth bigger counter sprocket on the XR, I think they have a pretty high final drive ratio stock so you should be okay.
You should both lower your forks as low as the will go and if you get a chain before the race, cut it to fit with the chain adjusters as far back as they will safely go without putting too much pressure on the adjuster bolts (thnk the XR is a cam'ed qwuick change?). This will help with stability when you are WFO.
Other must have items:
Orange or blue goggle lens......makes you see through dust better.
Tear offs or roll offs....gotta see where you are goin.
Dunlap 739G rear bites and lasts well at SF if you are tire shopping. The "G" designation has a stiffer sidewall and helps protect against pinch flats.
Dunlap Heavy tubes F & R.
12 pack of good imported beer.......standard currency of desert pit crews :)

John is talking about stretching your bike as far as possible from front to back, might feel a little heavier in the turns but nothing you can't handle, and it IS gonna be better at speed which is what this race is all about.
"Now lace 'em up fella's, it's almost boogie time"

15/48 GEARING?!?
Is that what you run John. If so you are going to get blown out of the water by Alan Violet on his CRF450.
Gear that 426 as high as it will pull. You're a Pro now, don't mess around. I run 15/44. I would run 15/42 if I could, but my 400 won't pull it. When I made the jump from the expert class to the Pro class I couldn't believe the difference in riders. I would sit down on the seat to take a sip of water out of my Camelback and get passed. I ran 15/46 gearing in the 1998 SF race, and it was if I was going in reverse.
Run what you want, but if you're not running in the triple digits in the Pro class, you lose. I know, because I've been there.
Last year I ran 15/44 in SF and had an awesome ride. Hardly no mistakes, and my bike was in the rev limiter for most of the fast sections. I finished 7th O/A!!!!

Here are some if the things I usually do on Saturday before the race:
1. Watch truck and buggy racers go +120 mph.
Kinda fun to see something that big go
that fast. And then break down or roll
over.
2. Check all my bolts for the 100th time.
3. Drink lots of water.
4. Pee 100 times.
5. Check tire pressure 27 times.
6. Check all my bolts for the 101st thru

7. Try to take nap, except the noise of 700

pee keeps my awake.

Don't do it. You will regret that gearing in the woods. 15/46 is plenty tall enough to win the 900 class, and probably up to the 200 class as well.

Will,
I think the 15/48 combo I suggested earlier is good 250 gearing for this track. Almost identical to El Gato's suggestion of 14/46 (theoretically 1/2 tooth higher final drive) but the 15 tooth counter sprocket allows the motor to have a one tooth higher mechanical advantage over the rear sprocket which allows it to pull the higher gearing better in the lower gears.

Yep, I think you have a good chance. Not many people, especially first timers pump their bikes/quads to much.
Besides some mild porting, and an exhaust my bike's engine is pretty much stock. Suspension work, and some protective guards is all you really need. All the other stuff is just for grins and giggles.

Actually the quad riders do need a number on their back (camelback or chest protector), bikes don't. You need a number on the back and front of your quad. The front number should be mounted up around the handlebars. They kinda frown on numbers on the nose of your quad because they are hard to read. Thats 3 number plates total and they must be black numbers on white plates OR white on black. They require the 3rd number plate on the back of the rider because the quads can be hard to read sometimes, especially during past years at Snowflake when it could get pretty muddy.
Other things they will look for at tech-
-Spark Arrestor
-Clamps on all fuel lines
-HYDRATION SYSTEM!
-Snell DOT approved helmet
I know the tech sheet also has nerf bars listed on it but these are not required. Many desert racers hate them, especially in the rocks.

Bring the number plates, Whiplash will have numbers at the race. At registration they will put your race number on the form, then you can go to tech and get your numbers and put them on your quad, yourself, etc, then you take all your stuff to tech for inspection.

Hhhhmmmm, Sounds like a quad question. Somebody else may want to jump in on this one.
I have been running Motorex oil from Cycle Gear. Very good oil, and it's clean.
Ever looked at the bottom of the oil container after you've dumped it into the bike? With most all oils (including Bel-ray and Maxima) there is a little crud left at the bottom. Not with Motorex.
I use Motorex suspension fluid also. Right off the bat you can feal an approvement. Super good stuff. They have been using it in Europe for years. All the top GPers and MXers run it in their bikes, street and dirt.

Let's do the 900 Class Paul. I classify for the Geritol crowd anyway. I just picked up a Turbine-Core Spark arrester for the R. [Thanks Jeff H] Here's a question for you seasoned racers. My R currently has almost 3 years on the topend. Compression is in the 150+ ballpark. I have the original 87 cylinder & wiesco kit sitting in the garage ready for install. It still runs OK. Will I be at a disadvantage in it's present condition. Also is this race a walk in the park or balls to the wall. I'm still on the fence about going. Thanks for the Help.
... Also is this race a walk in the park or balls to the wall. I'm still on the fence about going. Thanks for the Help...
Desert racing is as balls out as you want to be. Cruise if you want, or go out of control crazy if you want.
Snowflake has some big wide graded roads that lead into a nasty power line and then you make a turn into a handle bar width forest trail. A little of everything. For the most part the track is wide and open. You can make a mistake and still recover on most sections.
Slow down if it gets scary. I do.
As far as the top end, 3 YEARS!?!?!?!?!
I would change it, but I never run Wiseco's or siezeco's in the desert on 2-strokes. I do run them in my 4-stroke though.

Thanks Paul, E-Gato, Jeff H.
Three years is a long time. I think I'll start into it tonight. I just want enough break-in time before the race. Last thing I need is a shattered piston skirt. Oh well, time to get the wrenchs out. On a side note, where can I get a flywheel puller for the "R". Thanks again.
If you've got good compression - within the service limits - run it. My KX will be getting a new topend after Snowflake because the compression tester doesn't tell me I need one right now, though after a 100 mile race I know it probably will, so I'll check it again then.
Time doesn't matter, wear does.
Thanks Paul, E-Gato, Jeff H.

250RDude-
Most small shops and dealerships (Metro doesn't have #@%$!) have the flywheel puller in stock. I know Screwie Lewies has them if you can't find it anywhere else.
I don't think 150 psi is bad for a stock cylinder although I'm not sure what stock should be. I'm running 210 psi in my 310 jug which I think is actually a little to much for dez racing. It's been getting the job done though.
I think this is the BEST race to get started at. The 900 class is always HUGE at Snowflake , so you'll have plenty of competition. Last year there were even a few utility quads running out there. Having seen you ride at the cinders, I think you will do well! Just do it!

Well if you mean the Parker-200 it is very difficult.
But you probably mean the Parker Gran Prix scheduled for December. You descide; the laps are about 2-3 miles long, and kinda winds around a silty dusty plowed over perfectly flat field. They add some jumps without landings, and a 100 yard man made whoop section. The fun part is the land rush start.
Quads guys love it because it is a lot of hard packed flat tracking. I don't like it because it is a lot of hard packed flat tracking.

Paul,
You can get the number plates at most dealerships or shops in AZ. I bet Cyclegear has them. I'm not sure what is out by you since I'm in Surprise. You don't need a kill switch. Nobody uses them either. Probably a good idea. I have one just because it was required at the Adelanto GP.
If your a technical rider then you should have been at Prescott! Wickenburg is technical but it's more high speed technical..kinda painful if you ask me. Same goes for the Parker 200K. The parker GP is just like what ElGato said, a huge short course track.
I bet you would really like the Hyrogliphic race out by Lake Pleasant. I think it is in March.

Paul,
They always check to see that I have my stock on/off switch. So save your $30. Probably not a bad idea to get an actual tether kill switch though, when you can afford it.
As for the number plate that will be attatched to you- You can zip tie it to your camelback. However, if you have a camelback like mine that doesn't have a place to ziptie to, you can use four 2 inch sections of fuel line and some zipties to attach the number plate to your chest protector. Run the zip ties through your chest protector, then through the fuel line, and then to the number plate. This will space your number plate out so that your camelback will fit between the number plate and your chest protector.

It is hard though. It is technical, but kinda high speed.
That is the hardest kind of race, Fast AND Technical, because you have to think quick and react faster to up coming dangers. I think I like it so much because you have to actually have to have talent to do good there.
Any body can sit on the seat and twist the throttle, but not every body can ride a rocky, whooped out ridge line at 60 mph with one leg sticking out for balance. That is my kinda fun.

Run a 168 main jet in that KX-500 with your clip in the second position. That is what I ran there for years in my 500's. Works perfect.
That's why you want to know the elevation, right? 6,000 to 6,500 doesn't make that much difference.

Correct, I'm was looking for the elevation band. I had planned on bringing 170, 168, 165 mains and 58, 55, 52 slows. I'll have to play with the needle when I get up there. With the VForce I changed to the N82P needle ( .5 step richer than stock)

I've been informed by whiplash that in order for me to race, a parent must be there, or i must have someone there named my legal gaurdian and authorizing them to tell the medical people to treat me, i don't really want my parents there, but i'll probably do it next year

EL GATO,
ALright......since this thread has turned into a jetting guideline for SF, do I even need to think about changning anything on Blue Thunder? and secondly, since I have very little experience with this bike what do you think about a 15/48 gearing combo> Or maybe even a 16/48 (looks like I have the case clearance for a 16)I usually like to run the largest drive sprocket I can, and use the counter for the gear up.....makes it push the tire better. Okay, one more Q! Ever the run the bigger 120/90 rear on a 426?
Thanks in advance

EL GATO,
ALright......since this thread has turned into a jetting guideline for SF, do I even need to think about changning anything on Blue Thunder?
I hardly ever change jets on my bike. Thumpers aren't that picky. I did last weekend at Prescott and it did help. If I do change jets, it's never more than 1 or 2 steps from stock. I am probably going to run 1 step leaner on the main for SF. Just remeber that you'll probably be in the rev limiter on those back straight aways.
and secondly, since I have very little experience with this bike what do you think about a 15/48 gearing combo> Or maybe even a 16/48 (looks like I have the case clearance for a 16)I usually like to run the largest drive sprocket I can, and use the counter for the gear up.....makes it push the tire better.
O.k. I run a 15-44 in SF, but I also have a WR (Wide Ratio) tranny. You don't. You will need all the top end you can get. Run the 16. You shouldn't have any problems pulling it. I guarantee you that Alan Violet will be running a 15-42 or 43 on his CRF450 in SF. He will be your biggest comp.
Okay, one more Q! Ever the run the bigger 120/90 rear on a 426?
Yep, I have. I wasn't impressed. They're a lot heavier and harder to turn. You really don't need it unless you want to throw a lot more roost.

You guys hear the latest? (maybe this is old news but it's new to me). Just got a phone call from a friend. We are running the Car and Truck course which by-passes the woods section. The woods are burnt and falling trees make it a hazzard. Four 24 mile laps now. Sounds like I need to dig out my Mexico gears. Well atleast I won't have to worry as much about water in my airbox. Only have to pit once to.

I hate to say it after all the hype, but I am not going to be able to make this race for various reasons. Finances being the major one.
I've done this race six years in a row now. I've been as far back as 9th O/A and as far up as 2nd O/A.
I don't feel so bad now that I seen Jeff's post about the bikes and quads running the truck course. VERY VERY dangerous to run bikes and quads on a wide open truck course after they had a full day to tear it up. I'm talking huge ruts, pott holes, and whoops at 100mph. Not cool.
The thing I like about Snowflake the most is the power line and woods sections. If they're gone so am I.
Have fun All.

Well that sucks, you will be missed, one less pro plastering me with roost at they lap me .....
My goal was to ride all three laps. Now with 4 laps it's gonna be tough to not get lapped in the third lap. An extra 10 miles to go to get to that 4th lap. If I get a poor PILL draw and there are a whole bunch of riders, it's gonna be tough, the pros will be a LONG way around the course before I even get to start. All right nuff with the whinin. I'm gonna go ride it and have fun.

"Let up for a second and thats where you'll finish"
You guys are going to make me all teary eyed. I don't take having to bow out of a race I've planned for a year to well. I love to race and I pretty much live for it. Every thing I do, eating, sleeping, and trail riding is in preparation for the next race. It is a bitch to have to pull out because of money issues, but as everyone knows desert racing is expensive especially in the Pro class. I am forced to reprioritize my life for the next 6 months to a year so I can get back into a normal flow again.
I have really gotten screwed on the last few Baja races by certian individuals, and I will be paying for it for a while. I am to nice of a guy to force the issue.
So as far as racing I will try to make as many as I can, but you probably won't see me at to many of them. I will definately be doing the Enduro in November since the cost will be fairly low. I also want to ride in the Poker run in October.

Rick,
I am going to leave friday morning too, but I am on the north side so I go through payson to heber and then to the race, which is way quicker than through globe, show low and snowflake. Why dont we met at Fort Mcdowell casino?
Head Count!:
Okay, so it is you, me and Paul. My Bro'(our Pit boss!) is going on wed or thurs to rope off a spot for us, any other RA people making the trip? We will have our pit on the exit of the first turn, at the entrance to the gauntlet jumps Jay will put in the infield. Great place to pit and good place to watch the trucks and buggies from. WAY Dusty there, though........anyone bothered by that or have any input?
You guys still want my bro and dad to pit you guys, right? We are all in the same race but the timing should work out and they are pretty much pro's at pitting. I bought a "Fastcap" for my 426 and it works with my Acerbis dumpcan, so they will have me gassed and gone in about 7-8 seconds and they could pit you first lap and Paul second lap or vice-a-versa.
Let's get the details ironed out so we go there with a plan........or I get nervous and grumpy and everyone starts avoiding me until after the race
