OK,
Rather than read through 20 something pages of posts regarding turkeyweek, How long of a drive is it from Mesa...? I can get directions from the page. I might consider this. KTMBOB you interested?

RR,

It's about 2.5 hours from Mesa.

I'm considering this ride also because my Glamis Ride won't be done in time. [V] My trailer will hold 4 bikes with some "creative" tie-downs.

I ride a DRZ400

Dan is bringing a couple of buddies. I don't know what they ride.
Lets firm up plans next week, place and time to meet. I will keep in touch through this thread.
Sounds like a good time.

Whats the distance for the ride to Crown King?

11/19/03, 7:31 PM
Hey bob it depends on your ridding style and how much you stop to look around. I have made it in an hour aand half just cruising. I gaurentee it will be worth it. It is one of best rides I have done going from dessert to pines with some easy section with a couple of lines you make have to think twice about. Watch for the "ledge" it is a big flat rock just around the big bend after you pass through the creek. I had to help pull a new pickup off of it before i could continue the dudes wife was pissed lol

I think that the mileage is about 25-30 miles one way. Bob you will probably want to bring some premix, and a bottle so you can get gas. If I am not mistaken, there is a gas station we can roll up to and fill up...after we get some lunch..I heard the burgers are pretty good...

I'm up for a CK ride! Great burgers at the Mill, fuel & the best fudge in AZ at the general store. It's a 70 mile round trip so you can fill up at the store if needed. Best place to meet is just about 1/4 mile to the left after pavement ends. Bring a warm jacket, we got into a bit of snow fall last year near the top of the mountain.

Any problems staging there? We are not street legal. I have heard the rangers might have an issue with not parking down the road far enough.

snwbrder
11/20/03, 11:30 AM
Gerry,

I am not street legal either. What we do is continue down the dirt road until you cross a bridge, on the other side of the bridge is BLM land. You can stage on the left side of the road once you cross the bridge.

Once you get into Crown King you are supposed to be street legal. I have never been bothered with this issue as long as you don't bring attention to yourself.

I may join you guys, if I can get a kitchen pass.

OK - Lets firm this up. Meet at 9:30 on the other side of the bridge on Saturday, November 29. Does that sound fine with everyone? Great day ride. Maybe someone can post a map for those who aren't familiar with the area.

redrooster
11/20/03, 3:06 PM
This sounds like a great spot to stage. Just so I understand, this is the main road into lake pleasant? Is it Castle Hot Springs Road? How far from carefree hwy is this "Bridge"? I know that in the past groups trying to meet have oft times gotten lost and not found each other...

A map would be great....

11/20/03, 7:38 PM
Better yet, we should meet where the Castle hot springs rd pavement ends.( about 7-10 miles in from HWY 74) ( HWY 74 is Carefree HWY as you head west) Then a few miles past the bridge is the "y" intersection of Castle Hot springs & Cow creek rd. Turn right & Stage to the right a few hundred feet in. This puts us past the area where we need to be street legal. As for entering CK, yes just drive nice & slow. They love our business in town.

If anyone is unsure of meeting area, we could just meet at I-17 & carefree then go from there.

Right as you get off the I-17 exit, pull off to the right hand side.( South east corner ) There is a large open area with plenty of parking area.

I just may be up for this as well. Just went 2 weeks ago. I got turned on to a alternate route about 1/2 way up that bypasses that nasty shelf. It add's about 4 miles to the trip but is very scenic and takes you through about 10-12 miles of pines instead of 2 or 3. Meeting at Wild Horse at Carefree Highway and Lake Pleasant Road (99th Ave) may be easier than I17 and Carefree Hiway. Just an Idea.

Ken

It's going to be expensive, but of course that's only an estimate.

redrooster
11/20/03, 10:14 PM
yeah, I meant I-17....

Lets let Gerry decide where to meet since he is the one who originally offered and is hosting this ride...

I like the idea of making this a tradition. Instead of RA Turkey Week, it could be the 1st annual RA Turkey Day to CK..Just a thought.

Whats wrong with the shelf? A little challenge never hurt anyone...or did it? Besides, we may see some 4x4 carnage on the shelf.

Is this route typically pretty busy on the weekends? If so I wonder how much traffic we may encounter on a holiday weekend.

Are we plannin for a bite to eat at the top? I keep hearin' about the burgers and the fudge.....

&lt;&lt;&lt;&lt;&lt;&lt;&lt;&lt;&lt;&lt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;
" Keep the rubber side down "

Gerry
11/21/03, 12:56 PM
Wow, I get to make the call. Lets meet at the southeast corner of I17 and Carefree Hwy. Only because it is absolutely clear without a map. I don't recall the shelf being a big deal, although I did help some quads over it last time I was there. Also always enjoy seeing new sights. We might consider going up one route and coming back the other. We can grab some food at the top. Last time I was at the Mill and ordered a cheese burger, the waitress suggested I get the sandwich. We will have roll call next week.

redrooster
11/21/03, 3:47 PM
Maybe I keep hearing about the burgers because they are BAD....Gerry, what time do we want to meet at I-17 and CFH - 8:00? That should hopefully have us staged, dressed and ready to go by 9:00 - 9:30..What were you thinking?

I like the idea of alt routes on the way back.

Is there any issue with getting there in a minivan? (left the 4x4 at home)
What about permits? any required?

A couple of different opinions on this. I am putting a new tire on my bike Friday. Mine looks about like yours and I don't want any problems. Ron has new tire on right now and is going to change to an older tire prior to the CK ride. Says he doesn't want to tear up his new tire.

Grizz,
Here is what you do. Go on down to the Motorcycle Accessory Shop on Main between Dobson and Price. Rummage through their used tire pile. Find one that has decent tread, and have them mount it. They will mount (swap) used tires for $5. I used these 1/2 tread tires for over a year because I am too cheap to buy a new one. I have now seen the light, and buy NEW Maxxis IT tires for $42 bucks from Rocky Mountain and change them myself....

Just a work of caution with regard to the plating of your ride. Last year I was pulled over by a Deputy Sheriff and he told me that you had to have a "plate" for your ride. He didn't say if it had to be a RV or MC type plate. He also said that you had to have this plate for the entire ride, from Lake Pleasant all the way to Crown King.

I think he was BS'n ya, or just doesn't know, as that is BLM land.
Personally, I have never been stopped or even looked at, on [u]any</u> of the three ways to CK and even blew by a Ranger doin about 70 on the road from Bloody basin to CK.
Saw the same Rangers about an hour later and they just waved on the way by.

Who knows, maybe I'm just lucky that way.
I've had them tell me I need to slow down before and basically told them I didn't want to (in a respectful way)
In any case, I'm really not concerned about it.

I'll bring a used 120x100x18 Dunlap 739 AT with 1/2 tread if you need. We can change out in a couple of minutes B4 ride if you like. In fact I have several front & rear tires with 1/2 tread I'll bring along if someone wants them.

Thank you much, Mr. Brooks. But that tire is 110x90x19. Would an 18 inch tire work? Btw, If I make it, Ill also bring my digital Camera with 128 mb card. I can also at quick 19 second quickTime movies.
Thanks for the offer.
