O.K. So I'm new at the atv game. I got one and I love it. I have had a couple of jeeps over the years, love them too. I've never ridden in an RUV, but I think they look cool. So I need help. Why do I need one? I need to tell the Wife something...

It's a great stress reliever, and cheaper than a divorce..:D:D:D;)
Here's wishing you and your loved one's a Safe and Wonderful Holiday Season and a Happy New Year.

Because you have a lot of money burning a hole in your pocket. ;):D[:p]

Money, well no, that aint it. Do they ride better than my quad? More sporty than a Jeep? I ride a 2up quad, so carrying two people wont work. I know there must be a good reason.

I would take a quad over a RUV anyday but that is just me.

I'm only half serious with this question. Want one.. I want one of everything. Seriously, my jeep is great. Hunted, 4 wheeled in it for years. Tried a quad last year and I/we love it. Hauled me and elk all over the place. The RUVs look cool, but are they really better than my jeep off road? We went from Prescott to Crown King in the jeep this year. It was so much slower than my quad. But then we did have a stereo and air conditioning. I quess my real question is, is an RUV somewhere in between, or somewhere altogether different?

The only disadvantages I've found to the Rhino is you have to load and unload it unlike a Jeep and it is not quite as fast as a quad (but could be made fast). I've only had the Rhino for a few months but I'm more confident on it than the quad over rough terrain and it is much more comfortable and I have no problem keeping up with quads unless we were to drive on a straight maintained road going over 40 MPH . The steering wheel and foot controls are much more comfortable but as discussed on another post here that could be a problem on water crossings .The bucket seats are great too. I'm very happy with my Rhino and I only wish Yamaha would get busy and build enough for everybody.

WE have both quads and a rhino and we love both. The rhino is nice when it is just me and the wife we can cruise and have a conversation. It fits in my toyhauler where a jeep wont. I think it is a nicer ride but I love my quad. I promise you this though once she gets in a ruv she will be hooked. We are planning a trip to Crown King in the spring in our rhino can't wait.

I've had quads then change to an RUV. My carpole in my hands got so bad that quads were painfull. As you guest that broke my heart loved my quad. So I got my Prowler and guess what I can go all day and now wife go's with me more then she ever did when we had the 2 quads. She's a site see'r.
As others have said there not as quick as a quad. It takes more to handle a bigger machine. In the straits I top out at 50 fast enough for me.
You'll have OH YES YOU'LL HAVE ONE:D

Well, if money is not a problem....Get one of each!!!:D

The quad will allow you to take narrower trails, especially trails that are width restricted by the Forest Service to 50" (with fence posts at the beginning) to keep jeeps & RUVs out. There are a lot of trails throughout the west (in Utah for example) that are width restricted. There are plans to have more width restricted trails in Az as well....

Why didn't you get the two seat version of the Outlander to take your wife along??? I have one and my wife has no proble riding back there, even up some more difficult obstacles. She does want to get off on extreme obstacles, but I bet she would want to get out of a RUV on these obstacles as well.

With a quad, you can ride more difficult trails than a RUV. Also, if something happens, it is easier to turn a quad back over, or pull it out of a ditch, or turn it around on a narrow trail, or lift it over an obstacle than a RUV.

For example, click on this thread and then the link for a filmstrip of a trail you probably wouldn't want to take a RUV on....[:p]

You can't take the dog along with a quad....;)

We have both & like Chris said, if I had to choose quad or Prowler - it would be the quad. But we have a blast in the Prowler. It is a completly different riding/driving experience. You can just cruise along & look around, talk, pet the dog. You can also take everything including the kitchen sink with you if you want ![:p]

Tough call...
I personally love hard fast sand duning. I don't care much for offroad / trail quad riding.... But I love taking the Prowler out on the trails & washes.

That's my 2 cents worth...;)

I test drove ATV's and RUV's before buying my Rhino. I have owned 4X4 pickups since high school, and had a Scout for a while. I would not trade my Rhino for any of them. It fits in the bed of my truck with the tailgate down, so I can tow my camping trailer, goes anywhere (including places my friends won't take thier jeeps), hauls my elk, deer, or whatever else I shoot, works around the farm for hauling hay, feed, whatever, and the kids love it. And my wife can sit beside me when we go to Crown King.

WallyD, I've taken my Rhino to Crown King following quads. I've also owned quads and Jeeps. In my opinion, any maybe it's because I am very comfortable in my Rhino now, I can keep up with the quads going to Crown King. But how fast do you need to go? I put a CDI box in mine, along with after market pipe, opened up the air-cleaner and re-jetted it. I have a pretty fast and torqy Rhino (about 50mph). Would I do all that again, probably not. The only time I need that much speed is when I get on a highway going to another off road turnoff. I can tell you this, my jeep could never go as fast and as smooth going off-road as my Rhino. I have a hard time getting my wife to relinquish the driving of our Rhino. She couldn't handle quads or a jeep anymore due to many surgeries, but the Rhino has kept us off-roading. They are a blast (all the side-x-sides).

Check out my photos of the Martinez Canyon ride we did this past weekend (in the photo section of this site) Here is another example of why you want to keep your quad and not get a Rhino. The extra width of a Rhino would make this trail very dangerous and almost impassable on a Rhino, but it was only difficult on the quad.

I guess it depends on what kind of riding you want to do, easier rides like the Crown King 'back way' ride or if you want to be able to explore more difficult trails.
