View Full Version : Prescott Race
So what did you guys think of the course?
I'd have to say, that is one that will be added to my list of favorites. I like it tight, technical and nasty. It was single track for quads! I've been wanting to try a woods race back east for some time now and that's about as close as I've ever come to one. It was a nice change.

AWESOME!!!!!!
I wish they could all be like that.
Jeff, How did you do?
I got third O/A, in the bike race. The quad had a tad bit shorter loop sense there was soom nasty rock climbs in the bike section, so your guy's lap times where faster. Some bone head was out there directing some of the Pro quads around the bike loop. One dude was seriously pissed when he found out he did all that extra work for nothing.
Bikes O/A finish;
1. Brian Brunning - Open Pro
2. Dayton Raper - Open Pro
3. David Gronlund - Open Pro
4. Ken Kozlek - Vet Pro
5. Kyle Beshaw - Open Pro
6. Todd Johnson - Open Pro
7. Alan Violet - Vet Pro
8. John Cochran - Open Pro
The rest I would just be guessing on. My pit only kept times for the first few bikes.
BRP (Rick) did really good with a 5th in the 700 class (vet novice)

Way to go guys!
If I hadn't already had some prior commitments, I think I would have liked to run the race just for fun. I would even have liked to come out just to watch you guys if nothing else.
Sounds like a fun course. I'll try to be ready for next year. <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Now let's here all the gory details....starts, passes, etc!
Well I got lazy, and didn't preregister so I had a dead last start right next to Dayton Raper (5th, and 6th). Two bikes wide up a hill into a nasty hair pin corner, down a ridge line through a pile of rocks, back across the pits and out into 6.5 miles of single track.
Raper hole shotted me of course, and took off straight for the lead getting stuck behind the dirtiest wide bike rider on the course, Kyle Beshaw. Brian Brunning got tired of following Kyle earlier, so Kyle got a short trip into the trees. Brian took the lead early and started to check out. Raper followed Kyle trying to pass him for a full lap before following in Brian's foot steps and sending Kyle into the trees for a second time. In the meanwhile I had just caught back up to the two after a fairly slow first lap (nerves) just as Kyle was jumping back on the course. I got stuck behind Kyle for next lap and a half until he finally made a mistake to let me by. By that time Brain had 50 seconds on Dayton, who was making a charge, and Dayton had about the same amount of time on a tiring Cat that was now being chased by Vet Pro Ken Kozlik. Although I never saw him behind me, I knew he was there pushing hard. Before we could even get a clean run going and start riding our own race the checkers were out.
The race was a little too short for pro bikes. Two more laps would have proven for a good battle for the lead, and a good battle for third.
Dayton, Kyle Beshaw, and Larry Beshaw (Kyles dad, and sweep rider) had a few words at the finish about Kyles blocking antics. Dayton had never ever lost to Brian Brunning, and didn't take getting blocked to kindly. Dayton doesn't take second very well either.
Todd Johnson cramped up real bad on the first lap. He explained that it was so bad, he couldn't feal his feet or his fingers. I'm thinking he was getting a little of that high altitude sickness.
He finally had to back off and let the rest of us fight it out. He wasn't to worried because he didn't finish far behind Kyle who is pretty far back into second place for the points race. Todd pretty much has the state championship wrapped up. He has to compete in all races, but not necessarily win them all.
I had a great time and got to do some single track passing. Very cool, a little nerve racking though.
Eric Brown got wrapped up in the netting that was dividing the course and the pits, and lost a lap trying to get undone. I am not sure how he finished. I think he may have not finished at all

Jeff, How did you do?
Congrats on your finish El-Gato and BRP! <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>
Slyder trophied in ATV2! I have your trophy Slyder so come pick it up when you get back from Coral Pink!
I got 2nd place in ATV1. Nearly took myself out after getting a little to excited passing another 100 class quad in the rocks, at the end of that road with all those nasty g-outs. I had a great run other than blowing that one off-camber corner on the last lap. I pretty much had to come to a complete stop to make that turn the first 3 laps. Jeff Hancock got the win in ATV1. Thats twice in a week he's put me in 2nd place after he beat me at the Canyon Short Course race the weekend before. Anyone have a number for Jenny Craig?
I think Pro ATV racer Colby Turner was the only Pro that went on the bike course. The thing about that though is that Saturday, during the pre-run, the signs had bikes taking the first right turn and ATV's taking the 2nd right turn. There were "Wrong Way" markers after that on the road. I was surprised to see that guy out there waving me to continue straight down the road. I liked that tight section and the rocks. One quad breaking down in there would stop the race for everyone though.
Chad Prull won the O/A as usual in the ATV's. Next year my vote goes for 6 laps instead of four, or maybe we could get the course lengthened.
Bill Williford (MC Pro #88) went pre-running with me Saturday, on his KX500. He slid into one of those tree stumps and split his foot open after pinching it between the stump and his foot peg...had his boots on to. A trip to the hospital found no broken bones, and he was able to race yesterday. His foot didn't look real pretty though. Racing a KX500 through those woods can't be easy.
I like Snowflake just as much as everyone else, but the Hyroglythic and Prescott races are at the top of my list. Think I might head back up to Alto in a few weeks and check out the other trails.

El Gato, BRP and Jeff,
Congrats to you all. That is really cool that you all did so well. You make us proud.
So when's the next one? We need to get you some RA representation/support out there.

Snowflake is the next race.
Labor day weekend. We should have a good turn out for that one as well.
Good job Jeff. I had heard about Bill. nasty stuff.
When I was prerunning on saturday a quad got stuck on the rocks in the bike section, and it was like a I-60 rush hour traffic jam. I don't have any idea how you guys could have passed at all anywhere out there.

I'm about ready to jump up to the 600s, less competition .......
Check out #703s times, if he had entered in the 600 class he would have taken home a first place throphy instead of the second place he took.
#730 rode five laps, none of 600 class rode five laps.
!@#$@#$ sand baggers <img src=icon_smile_angry.gif border=0 align=middle>
Well the pig will be happy on the Snowflake course, it was definatly out of place in the twisties at Prescott.

Whiplash doesn't seem to force the issue to much about sand bagging in the higher age group classes. They figure grown ups would have enough since to move themselves up.
They would definately take a closer look at your class if you turned the light on for them.
Shoot them an E-mail. Voice your concerns. Jay will listen.
