I haven't heard anything about the whole weekend. How did it go???? I've been going crazy all weekend wondering how the race went. Raper didn't answer his phone last night. I'm assuming he didn't win since he didn't right call back. I hate missing the Mexico races.

Well,
I started in front of Ben. He passed me after a couple of miles, then I see him sitting on the side of the track apx. mile marker 5 blew up his motor. Now all I have to do is finish and I have third place for the season. Mile marker 15 apx. I blew up the KX 500. So Mike Parks went from fifth to third in one race. Parks is very close to Alan V. maybe even passed him for second. Alan was runnig fifth overall through pit 6 and then came walking back, tranny blew. Travis and Big John hit the same rock wide open. I heard Travis broke his leg and I don't know what else. They were both lying apx. 20 feet from eachother. The finish was first David Topee, second was Eric Anderson, Third was Dan from Searchlite, fourth was Dayton. That's about all I know.

Yes, many had bad luck & took a beating. I started front row of the 600 class next to 613 Paul Williams. Paul ( former # 113 )just turned 40 & decided to join the old fat guy ranks;). I pulled the hole-shot & led for a bit. At Mile 5 there was #32 blown up. Then at mile 8 there was my team mate & open points leader #145 Ramoes, Joe blew his tranny. At mile 15 there was #5 blown-up. I then caught & passed a few 200's, then #613 made the pass on me at about mile 20. ( and he is on a 250 thumper? ) A mile or 2 later # 608 Middleton passed me. He started on the back row. I kept both of them in sight for a few miles, then they disapeared. I then came up on Travis & Albro at mile 25. John was moving that huge rock off the trail as I pulled up. He seemed OK, but Travis looked in bad shape. Someone else was already stopped so I contineued on. About mile 40 I caught up to two pro qauds dicing it out. I had to eat their dust for a mile or so, then had to make a scary pass on both of them at once. I felt the front tire of one qaud hit my rear & I almost lost it. Mile 45 was 1st pit at the goat farm. I reported the crash back at mile 25, fuel & back on it. Things were pretty smooth & very fast up to my last pit at the hole in the fence mile 85 I believe. As I pulled out of the pits I saw # 3 pulled off to the side. Another blown tranny. I heard that alan was running 2nd O/A most of the race before his bike blew. From there on I had to eat dust from a couple of 100's up to the finish line.
Also my buddy down the street & 40+ qaud point leader # 161 Ken Martian crashed & broke his A-arms & tie rods. I believe he is still in good shape to take the campionship
Kyle Beashaw takes the pro win & secures the pro-bike campionship.
My team mate # 112 Mike Crawford take the open class win & he also clinches the open title
Mark fisk # 747 takes the 40+ 700 class win. Mark also took a spill & was a bit beat-up, but managed to bring it in 1st. Great job Mark!
As for the 40+ O/A, what a great year! The points battle swapped hands several times & was close all year. Coming home 1st, the fastest guy out there # 608 John Middlton. 2nd was #613 new 40+ member Paul Williams. Great job riding that 250 yamaha thumper! I rolled in 3rd ( #611 ) and pulling up in 4th was # 603 Kevin Higgins.
Now this was toooo close. From what I figure, I took the 40+ championship by 3 points. Middleton & Higgins tie for 2nd.
I talked with Travis & a few of us helped load him from the back-board to his truck. We think he has a broken left ankle, broken lower right leg, and possible damage to his right knee. He was in a lot of pain, but in good hands with his nurse girl-freind Dawn. Hope your feeling better Travis.
John Albro seems to be OK. He just has a sore shoulder & scrapes & brusies.
I saw Randell & he seemed to be fine as well.
Jay also announced the first race of the year will be the Canyon G.P. New Years weekend. Hope to see you all there!

Thanks for thinking about me Phil & Congratulations to your 2003 Championship. :D 747 wadded it up hard 5th gear WFO between La Pinta & Goat Farm. When I woke up I thought I was play riding out by 4 Peaks & rode the race course backwards until the first Quad dodged me (SORRY) & kept going until I saw bikes coming @ me really fast. Stopped & tryed to think what was going on & remembered I was in a race [B)] Turned around & passed those guys back & pitted @ Goat Farm. My niece & her husband pitted Dayton #99 first, then me, and last # 904 Jesse Canepa (Searchlight NV) I had ripped my chest protector off & my Camel was empty from the crash so I raced about 75 miles with no water AGAIN [B)] Every whoop was making the side plastic dig into the rear tire but I didn't realize how bad it was. End Result = Bent sub-frame, 2 bent wheels, torn up messed up dirt bike & 1 First Place Trophy [:0] I have a concussion & severe deep bruising from knee to mid-back on my right side. To top it off my wifes Mom had passed away Tuesday before the race & she flew home to be with her Dad Wednesday. When Dayton & I got home around 9:00PM Sunday the phone was ringing & Jan told me her Dad had just died :( They were together for 50 + years & he was healthy (Talked to him Friday) SO I just thank God Jan didn't lose both her Dad & Husband on the same day! Be out of pocket for awhile so Adios to all!!!! SPECIAL THANKS to my good friends Mitch & Jill Canepa & their Son Jammin Jesse for taking # 1 in the 900 class. Grandpa still has bragging rights though - I beat him by 2 minutes (he was on a stock KX-125)

Sorry about your crash and your family problems Mark, but good job on the win. Tell Jan we're praying for her and her family. Get a little rest and we'll see you on News Years weekend. I hate races on holidays though. My family isn't a racing family so I pretty much have to blow them off to race.

Kyle was taking it easy. He even picked up pro quad rider 69 Jeff Hancock and gave him a ride back to check 5 after the clutch went out on the quad. David Topee got the win. Eric Brown got second MCS Andy Brown took the MCS win. Don't know him either.

Phil,
I was one of those 2 Pro Quads you passed between La Pinta and the Goat Farm...hope it wasn't me who clipped your wheel. I had a clean race, but a slow one. The rear shock on the new quad has new valving, but I was still running the stock spring (new one had not come in yet) and it was beating me to death. Oh well, I still had a good time, and I guess it takes a couple runs to get the bugs worked out on a new bike. (Or at least it makes for good excuses.[:p])
It was sure nice to be on a quad that could go more than 35 miles on a tank of fuel. Lets hear it for thumpers!

I'm back! The race started out good. M. Parks and myself started on the third row. I was in front of him by the first corner, caught Dezi by mile 2-3? Mile 4 I passed Richard, and Kyle for second place. I was feeling good when things went bang, clunk, pop, and almost threw me over the bars. The motor locked up at mile 5. I'm not sure what it is yet, but don't think it's the tranny. Sucks bad, I sat there and watched everone but Eric Anderson go by :(. I knew I should have raced the 650! I was almost asleep since I figured it would be several hours before I would get picked up, then Joe Ramos came to the rescue. From there we heading over to the hole in the fence. My Dad was there, and did a serious double take when he had seen my bike in the back of a truck. I got there just in time to see Anderson come by with the lead, but Topet was hot on his trail. I also got to help fuel Dbag, and Jason Keys. Keys lost 5th gear in his WR 426 going down well road. Needless to say it was a bad day for Yamaha owners. But a Yamaha did O/A the race.
I helped out Travis for awhile after the race. His right knee was bown out, and left ankle was in bad shape.

Wow! Thursday night I decided to can Mexico just because I was burnt out and sick from 2 jobs and had negglected yardwork piling up at home. I was going on less than 10 hours sleep for the whole week and the quad still wasn't ready. So I stayed home and got some rest. Sounds like it was a good decision.
I'll add one more name to the casualty list. My bro-in-law Steve Bolinger (ATV1) wadded up real bad and broke his collar bone and several ribs. He's still in the hospital but should be out by tonight. I guess the doctors were still concerned about a little fluid in his lungs. A very special thanks goes out to Sam Carlise (ATV #155) who gave up his race and stayed with Steve.
I just heard about Tony Pedotto today from Kirk Schreier. I hear the break is in 3 places now and will require some therapy.
I also heard Dayton got penalized and was moved to the back of the pack for jetting his quad at the Oasis, or something like that.
I'll be racing the SpeedWorld GP this weekend for a quick fix..hope to see some of you there!

Hey Guys,
Well I'm a hurtin' puppy. But considering what happened I'm pretty damn lucky. I took off on the second expert row. I was riding my Dad's 525EXC for the first time and I felt great. I passed all the pro quads and John Albro before turning North at the La Pinta check. Things were really clicking for me.
I felt so relaxed. I was going up the sandy road in sixth gear pinned. All of a sudden I was flying through the air at 100+ wondering what in the world just happened. I couldn't believe what was happening. I never saw anything. It was like my suspension exloded or something. Next thing I know I'm lying in the course collecting myself. I dragged myself off the track unable to stand.
I hear an engine coming fast. I assume it's John since I got around him last. All of a sudden he is flying through the air coming towards me. He landed about 50 feet short of where I was lying. He looked pretty loopy but I couldn't move to help him. He ended up collecting his thoughts as we laid for what seemed forever staring at each other with our faces in the sand. He didn't know what happened either.
Eventually he got up even though he was having trouble breathing the entire time. I told him to lie there but he said he felt better. He walked back to the point of impact and found a partially submerged piece of granite lying in the left side of the track. We assume somebody used it to get their vehicle unstuck from the sand and just left it there to get covered up. Oooops!
John said it was 150 paces from impact to where I was lying(125 to where he landed)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Eventually people stopped and helped.
I want to say a special thanks to Jason Keys(#128). Buddy, you are what makes desert racing special. You ruined your own race to stay and make sure you did everything you could do for us. I can't thank you enough. Even though there wasn't a whole lot you could do for us I won't forget it. I promise!
They ended up strapping me to a backboard and trucking me out. Thanks sweep riders! Sam Meyers thanks for getting my bike out of La Pinta.
Anyway, we drove back to Prescott to see the ER doc. They took X-Rays of my right knee and left ankle. They did a CAT scan on my left abdomen. It was filling up with blood and they were worried about internal injuries. All negative thank goodness. No broken bones in the ankle or knee but they were swelling up huge. They say I have an unknown amount of tear in my right MCL. Sure feels like a lot of tear right now. I see the orthopedic doc next Monday for an MRI and the final diagnoses. Hopefully it's not as bad as I first feared.
Ben thanks for the baby food. Richard and Sara thanks for the privacy. I hope I didn't ruin your meal. Mrs. Beshaw thanks for the lift. If you guys find a Camelback Rev I know who's it is. Jim Richardson thanks for not being too bummed about missing the beer at JJ's. To all the others that helped whom I can't recall thank you to you also.
Sincerely,
Travis Epperson

I don't think anyone could have guessed the carnage that would come out of this race.
Thanks for the gift Desi and Ben, but if you kept the reciept i would tell ya to return it.
I started with Ben and was content to play follow the leader and like most it seems i was hell bent on a good fast race. I got passed by a few guys who were just flying and when Randall passed me i jumped on his line on ran with him about 5 miles to the highway. We had caught someone as we hit the highway and i got the dust of two bikes where i was hoping to pin it. I crossed the road and was on the wrong side of the ribbins. As i did a u turn Alan coming. We diced back and forth like 5 times until we came to randall who's bike was in my silt rut. As i pulled up to miss his CRF a bike came from 5-10 feet out of the desert to cut me off in the silt. That sucked. Anyway about 1/2 mile from lapinta i swaped out and hit the ejector button. I have it on helmet cam, if you want to see it send me a email and i will forward. I cracked my collar bone and lost my water. The next few miles were funny to watch on tape, I couldnt seem to ride strait[:p] after that found the grove and except for the second half of that barb wire road i held it to the stops.
I Just can't remember a race with this much carnage!!
I hope everybody heals up fast and can afford to fix there bikes so we can do it all again next year

This was an interesting race to say the least! In the first couple miles Travis went by me like he was shot out of a gun, the usual smooth/fast style I have witnessed all year! On about mile 5 I came across Ben yelling at me “I should have bought a Honda” or something like that and for me to keep on racing. Around 15 miles into the race I was out of energy and out of breath and just trying to let the arm pump work itself out. Crawford and Jason Keys were railing and both went by me in whole nether gear. Right after the first pit I came up on what none of us want to see in a race, a total yard sale right in the middle of a WFO 5 mile section. Travis and John were off the side of the course with Travis’s bike laying side ways across the course. Jason Keys was giving me the this is not good at all gesture (finger across the throat) after yelling at each other for a few minutes we decided it would be best for him to stay and for me to get to the next check point and let them know what was going on. Just as I reached down for the kick starter some A$$hole on a kx500 decides to split me and Travis’s bike in fifth gear pinned, just about taking me out for good!! Well I spent the next 40 miles looking for a checkpoint while wonder if either one of those guys were alive. (SCARY) The next check was at the Goat Farm and it seemed as if it was never going to come. After reporting what happened at the check I just cruised the rest of the race, trying not to think about the worst-case scenario. I was relieved to hear that Travis and Jon were going to be ok when I crossed the finish line.
Jason gave up a good race to help a fellow racer in need, when I am sure he would have been on the podium in this race. Thanks Jason you are what this sport is all about!!

After reading the battle damage reports, it's no wonder they call it "WHIPLASH Racing".

DBAG - Congrats on a podium finish even though you were just cruising. Lost ALL my water in the big crash & rode 75 miles without fluids again. Thanks again for teaching me how to hydrate before the race. Glad the Butthead on the KX-500 missed you @ high speed. I had a few close calls because I started riding the course backwards but no nasty e-mails or calls yet. Head banging stuff really scrambles the eggs for awhile. I do want to promote a race or just fun riding safety product here. I hated it in the beginning but in the end I believe it saved me from SERIOUS neck injury. All of you should consider wearing the new neck braces that are on the market now. It limits your head & neck movement up & down during those unscheduled ejections. No particular brand name but I know it saved me!!! [^] I will NEVER ride without one again. Now if they can just invent bumper pads for the bike [:0]
