View Full Version : Klondyke VIA Mammoth Az.
Lets do it guys. I got the nod from Mamma.
It's roughly 75 miles round trip with lunch and gas at the turn around spot in Klondyke. I'll shoot the owner an e-mail when I roughly know how many people want to go so she can have the grill fired up.
What I would like to see is at least two groups perferably three. I will lead the bike group and someone else who has done the ride before on a quad can lead a quad group. Volunteers?? Bunk, Teri??? That way we won't lose anyone. We may also need to break up into two bike groups. Any volunteers to lead a second tad slower bike group?? Just like before we will just be cruising having fun, NOT RACING.
Be prepared for a long, rough, but rewarding day. It's important to get an early departure, maybe 7:00 at the latest. RMbassethound might want to bring an extra clutch cable.:D
What do you think, any takers??

Dave,
Man, talk about timing..Remember when you were over and I was talking about my swingarm bearings? Well, its all apart, and I won't get the parts until the end of next week (Service Honda). I won't have it back together in time. The 27th would be better for me...

Yes it is a far drive. Mammoth is about 40 miles north east of Tucson. You'll never amke it.

Carry a gallon with you. I do it all the time, it's the only way to pre-run hundreds of miles in Baja at one time. Use an old antifreeze bottle and stuff it in your back pack. If you don't have a back pack, you can borrow mine.[/quote]

Man that sucks. I was wondering if the combination of the weekend before christmas and short notice was going to kill this ride. Would 12-27 or maybe even 1-10-04 be better for everyone? I'll leave it as it is for the weekend, and re-evaluate monday morning.

I hate to try this ride on a sunday since it's so far away and a long ride. If anything happens and it takes longer to get out you'll be driving home late sunday night with work early monday morn. Fistfull (Rick Guffey) and I stayed in his toy hauler last time and it was fun. It will be pretty cold at night, but we're tough. A camp out is a good idea.

Z,
Why don't you mount a 6 pack rack to the quad? A 2.5 gallon gas can fits nicely. I know alot of guys that do this at the dunes so they have enough gas for their BUILT Gas Guzzling 250r's.
I have several gas cans if you would like to borrow one.
Dave,
I too would prefer the 27th. Granted, I still have to get a kitchen pass, however the likelyhood is much better on that date...

Well I've been thinking that this is the best day for me to do this ride. I have family stuff the weekend of the 27th, and a brand new race season starts in the new year. Anyways, it's hard enough to get Paul out on a ride, so I better not change the date. He might pull out:D. I'm going to leave it as is. For those who can't make it on the 20th, we'll do it again soon. I'm sure Fist will want to go as soon as he gets unscrewed in late January.
Saturday December 20th it is, FIRM.

But, as so you well know, matters not how good they are, pics could NEVER do proper justice to the difficulty of the Hill OR the astounding beauty of Arraviapa. No way, Jose. The human eye is not big enough to drink in but a fraction of the sights, much less try to capture it on "film". Incredible.
The Arraviapa Wilderness Area certainly tops the list of the most georgeous places in Arizona
(...probably in the wide world)
Carpet Hill is just a b!tch...period.

arraviapa canyon.... wow, I have not heard that in a long time. I have hiked down in the canyon a couple times back in the late 80's. They limit the number of people backpacking thru there at a time, and often a 6-8 month waiting list. I do not know if this is still the case or not to hike in the canyon, but that how it was back then. I will have to take saturday morning off from work, cuz I know its a long ass drive over there.

Arizona,
El Gato is welcoming all.
I also believe he is calling for someone to lead a slower quad group.
We did not even keep up with the bike group when we did this ride with him in March. There was one other quad rider who did. The other two quads in the group bowed out early due to a tire puncture.
I suggest you ride it like we did and soak in the sights. (Do not forget you have to make it up the damn Hill before dark). It's something like a 70 mi trip. It took us aprox 11 hrs.
This is a must do ride for you Arizona. You will love it!
(I am not sure this is a ride suited for your lady, definately grueling)

It's 75 miles round trip that feals like 150 miles. I think it is tougher than Crown King, but not by much. This ride is just tough all the way, Crown King is tough in sections.

Alright, is anyone still going??? If so here's some directions.
U.S.-60 east to Superior, hang a right on highway 177 towards Kearney and to Winkleman. Hang a right onto highway 77 to Mammoth. Turn left onto Copper St (I believe, help me if I'm wrong). Go past main street and continue past Clarks Trucking through the dry river bed (I hope) and continue to a stop sign. Continue straight through the stop sign across the road and straight towards the mountains. I beleive it's another mile or so up out of the canyon to a big flat spot on the right. Unload there.
For the ride and to those who may show up late. Unload and head up the big graded dirt road for about 6 miles. Hang a left at the top of the ridge before you drop back down into Copper Creak (if you get to the creek you went to far) Follow the road for a long time and rest often. There isn't to many roads that vear off of the main road. Pretty much one way in and one way out. Follow the road up over the mountains and down into Turkey creek. Follow Turkey creak out to Aravaipa canyon and continue to the town of Klondyke. After Aravaipa it turns to a graded main road. I don't know if you can ride that legally or not unregistered, but I've never had problems. I usually turn around there, but the store is also fun to ride to. I can do it without needed gas, but we'll go get some just in case.

I think it can be done, but it's a rough ride so you don't want to burn yourself out or get hurt. Flat's are also an issue if you ride to hard. I'm sure we won't be going all that fast to begin with and there's always the late departure factor. You can always turn around at Parsons Grove which is the little white house near the creek at the half way point or just hang around there until the rest of the gang gets back on our way home.

David,
I'm thinking I'm in for this ride along with a friend and possibly another. We're quad riders and should be up to the ride. Gas is available in Klondyke so there is no distance problem. Not looking at doing a fast pace, just an enjoyable pace.
Not sure how many are wanting to do this from the string. Don't know if there are any other quaders that have chimed in.
Just read you directions and i think its the same as what I found on the USGS maps. I'll work through your route and set it up on the GPS.
My friend does a lot of hunting up in the Klondyke and has riden in and around the immediate area. He's very much interested in the ride.
So this is about a 10 or 11 hour leasurly ride round trip. That would mean a departure at or before sun up (about 6:30 AM) and then expecting to return to staging area by say ... 6:00 to 7:00 PM. We could leave later but it sounds like it would be a definite last mile arrival in the dark. This is no big deal for me with a GPS or compass.
We are trail repair and survival prepared if for any reason we or anyone else becomes stranded.
A couple of FRS radios?
Utility quads implies we have hauling space. If its two of us going we may be able to carry a couple gallons of mix for any 2 wheelers although you should be able to do several round trips on 1/2 a tank ...... NOT.

I talked to some friends from the area and they say they had some snow flurry's with the last storm that blew through last week. I wouldn't imagine to much is still left. If any it would be under trees in the very highest point of the pass which is over 5000 elevation. It WILL be cold up on top of the mountain so dress accordingly. Those who did the ride last March know what I mean. I plan on bringing a couple dry pair of socks in my back pack for those water crossings. Ice cold feet = danger for the rider.
Each rider should have matches, food, WATER(just because your body is cold doesn't mean it doesn't need fluids), tools, warm clothes, spare fuel if needed, possibly fix a flat, and make sure your ride is in perfect working order. It would be close to impossible to tow a rider out of there, and I'm not volunteering my truck for a recovery mission.

Update on the weather. My dad says they got a little more than just a snow flurry last weekend in Oracle (10-15 miles away but the same elevation). He claims 4"-6" last sunday. He is telling me that it is freezing solid every night and it's dropping down 40 degrees by 5:00pm. BUT the weather is supposed to be much warmer later this week and this weekend. The staging is a tad lower elevation 3500-4000, but the pass is up over 5000. I'm going to wear a bigger jacket and unliners in my gloves with possibly sweats under my pants. I'm thinking there will be snow and ice on top. I can't hardly wait.
Plan to get cold.

Well snow does scare me a little since I've had a cold all week, but I'm getting the quad ready now and setting up a back pack. Looks like #76 is coming with me to :)

I'll be there if I can wake up in time :( I'm sure Jeff will see to that!
Sunrise is not until 7:30...are we going to need headlights for this one?
One more question...gas available at Klondyke. Do they have 91 octane, or just 87?

87 only I believe, and bring a lot of money.

There was some talk earlier in the thread about camping out friday night. Anybody still thinking about it?? I for one have planned to stay at my dads house in Oracle which is 10-15 miles away. It will be cold in the old tent for sure if you are planning on camping.
I've been getting some flack about making this a saturday ride. Next time we'll do it on sunday, maybe in Jan. or Feb.
I hope no one is planning on riding race speeds. I got pretty banged up last night at Canyon raceway. I'm fine but I'm moving a tad slower this morning. The good news is that the bike only experienced minor scratches and dings. The bad news is they took the other guy to the hospital with a broken shoulder.

Less than race speed is just fine with me. I'm really looking forward to meeting some new faces. I'd like to make a few stops for pictures. I'm bringing the SLR along. I hear this ride is pretty scenic and might make a good article for ATV Illustrated.
Sorry to hear you can't make it Zhvonte. I was gonna pick up some extra tire plugs for you to. [:p]

U.S.-60 east to Superior, hang a right on highway 177 towards Kearney and to Winkleman. Once though Winkleman hang a right at the stop sign onto highway 77 into Mammoth.
Hey Norm, this is a previous post in thread. I also have R.A. arrows printed out in my truck. I'll tape them to the stop signs posts in town at the major turn offs like last time. They're small and hard to see so look a little harder. I'm leaving early in this afternoon to scope it out in the day light.
6:30-7:00am staging with a 7:00 hopefull take off time.

I'm heading home in a few minutes to load up and go so I'll see you all out on the trail. Like I said before if you show up late and we're gone don't go home. Just ride up the road for six miles and hang a left. I'll put an R.A. arrow sign directing the way. From there it's a no brainer until you get to Aravaipa Canyon then just stay on the biggest most traveled road to Klondyke or just turn around. Or you can not make the left at the six mile mark and continue straight up to Copper Creek and explore. That is a very awesome place with lots of history. There is an old gost town up there with a big hotel and buildings, but it's hard to find if you don't know where to go.

Thanks to all who came out and did this nasty ride. You come riding with me and you'll go home tired and sore, I can almost guarantee it. Everybody did good and we only had one little roll over (Norm) and one flat tire 6 miles from the end (Phil). I had completely forgot about Dec. whitetail deer season but all the hunters were pretty cool about it. That could of been because we gave them lots of room and respect.
When's a good time for the next one??? I heard a lot of gripes about being on saturday so we'll try for sunday next time. I would just hate to have problems that required a second day of recovery. I guess a sick day wouldn't hurt that much. I also heard requests for later in the the spring when the colors come out. It may take me that long to forget how rough this trip was.
Rick, the hump at the rifle range and the road up to the staging was a lot worse this time from rain run off. You would have never got your trailer through there.

So we're all loaded up everybody made it back so it's time to go. Jeff and Slyder take off down with there quads on the trailer tied down pretty good. I tied up some loose ends and took off a few minutes behind them. It's dark and we all just want to be home, maybe a little to bad. I come around a corner on the dirt road in my truck and notice a quad in the middle of the road. It's wierd that some one is out riding in the dark and a coincedent that it has the same number on it that Slyder has on his quad. Wait a minute, there's no rider. It IS Slyders quad. It fell off the trailer and landed on it's wheels pointing down the road, but where's Slyder??? He is on his way home. I pull up in front of it and start to try and figure out how I'm going to load up his quad and my bike in the back of my short bed truck. Just about then I look up and here comes an embarrased Slyder to retrieve his baby. I sure am glad he looked in the mirror and omly saw one set of handle bars on the trailer. BUT then again I could have made some cash selling that beautiful thing.;)
I almost forgot to mention the quote of the day. "NO we're not half way there, we're only HALF WAY TO THE HALF WAY POINT."
