Look in profile for the mods i've got on my quad.
hey gato, what about wick? i've heard it's a lot of technical stuff, and i've found i'm better at technical stuff more than anything else.
Awesome race, my favorite. I got the win there last year, and I'm already registered this year.
It is hard though. It is technical, but kinda high speed.
That is the hardest kind of race, Fast AND Technical, because you have to think quick and react faster to up coming dangers. I think I like it so much because you have to actually have to have talent to do good there.
Any body can sit on the seat and twist the throttle, but not every body can ride a rocky, whooped out ridge line at 60 mph with one leg sticking out for balance. That is my kinda fun.
Wear glove liners, because Vulture Mine = blisters.

Here are a couple Wickenburg pictures. These are the whoops coming right out of the pits. Speaking of pits, that is my pit right behind me in the back ground. Gotta love going through those whoops with a full tank of gas.

What gearing should I run at Wickenburg on my yz250. I decided to not ride snowflake, but instead make Wickenburg my first race. I think that I'll be more prepared by october. Snowflake is just too soon.
thanks
will
I run 14/46 in Whick. Stock gearing wouldn't be bad either (14/48), but there is a couple of minature straight aways that I wouldn't want to miss out on.

I just want to be as fast as you think you are.
Actually, I am going to set this one out this year. It is by far my favorite race of the year, but I am going to be in Washington for a wedding. Just got the invite.
I'll give someone else a chance to win it this year. (just kiddin). I'll be thinking of you all, have fun.

Actually you scared me more in the Snowflake post when you said you were going to put the low flying aircraft gearing on that KX-5-honey. I don't want any part of the business end of that deal.
This is by far the hardest race to bow out of, but as far as racing is concerned family comes first.

Well, I can agree with that. Let's look farther ahead then...
Are you gonna make the Dec. Mexico race?

I don't know about Mexio, but I heard the Parker Gran Prix in November has been cancelled and they are trying to get something going down in Tucson at the newly acquired Pima Motorsports Park.
I called the other day and switched my pre-entry from the Oct. race(Wickenburg) to the Nov. race wherever that is.
Actually to qualify for series points you have to race 50% of the races and 2 of the last 4. I would have to do the last 2 races to qualify for points. I am so far back anyways that I may just blow off the points.

I just got a call from Jackie and she said there is/was a parker conceil member starting crap about whiplash and the BLM. I think this guy had some kind of under the table deal going on with another organizion, putting some cash in his own pocket. The city of parker fired him but the damage was already done. Annoucement will be made as soon as monday on new schedule. She is asking racers to boycott any parker races this year. Now that this prick was fired they may try to do something in parker next year. Phil Brooks # 777
There is nothing in the rule book about having to race Mexico for the points.
It is probably stuck in your had because it is always one of the last races of the year, and not every body races every race so Mexico is the last resort to quailfy for points.
I always do that race because it is my favorite Mexico race (point to point) and....well....it's Rocky Point. December in Rocky Point is always a nice time to race, and there isn't as many people down there. You don't have to get into as bad of an elbow war at the bars trying to get a Corona.

So who all is going to race at wick??
I have never been to this race but have been told there is not a lot of room for camping etc. plus the trucks and buggies will be there, after snowflake and the dust I am thinking of staying at campground somewhere away from the race site.

Hey Rick I' in the same boat. My pit guy bailed on me just B4 the Snowflake race. I do not want my wife south of the boarder alone as well. I will most likely follow Mike Parks & Joe Ramoes down to Sonita, but they are in the 100 & 200 class. Their pits will be ahead of our 700 class. We will need are own pit crew. I have a freind that said he will come down with me but I do not want to count on a maybe. If you might want to team up let's talk. I was going to make reservations for saturday night at the Oasis within the next week or so B4 they are booked. What do you think. Phil Brooks # 777

If nothing else everyone needs to get out to this race to watch. Destry Abbott (2 time #1 AMA Hare and Hound champion, Team Green rider) will be out to give the Pro's a riding lesson. He is an amazing rider, and a blast to watch. I usually watch him as he goes flying by me at about mile .25 from the last row when I start in the first row.
He showed last year and blew his tranny on the jetting loop. He has a score to settle with that track. It will be his first race back from shoulder and knee surgery. I doubt he will hold anything back, he never does.
I'm going to have to miss this race, I will be out of town. Familia calls. (how convenient, right?!?).

Gato- Can you elaborate on the "Point-to-Point" race...? My riding buddies and I have always been interested in either the P-to-P or the Rock to Rock. I absolutely love Rocky Point, but I've heard that it's sketchy if you break down or get hurt... (the sweepers may not come for days, and there's not a hospital for hours...) I ride a new 520exc, so I'm not that worried about a breakdown, but I've heard that the locals can booby-trap, and that the whoops at 80mph, can cause brain damage.
*on a side note, we've also been talking about a trip from Rocky Point to El Gulfo and back... Have you ever ridin it? Thank you, Erik.

I'll be there, I havn't made any plans to join up with anyone. My plans are to go to Wickenburg Saturday morning and find an campground/rv park to stay at (I've heard the camping at the course is less than desirable). I am planning on getting out to the race course about 3ish, do registration and tech, the preride starts 5ish. Sunday morning, I plan on being at the track early, the bikes are racing at 8 o'clock. Thanks phil, do I need to bring a easy-up to pit under or can I pit with you guys? Also do you know the exact procedure and schedule for registration, tech, and preride? We were thinking about coming out sat. to see where everyone is at, so do you know where we'll be able to find you? I have one last question for you dealing with setting my bike up. Can you guys help me find a setting for my suspension? With this being my first race Im not sure what the average setting should be.

Good luck to all who are racing, I am going to sit this one out, which will be tough because it is one of my favorites. My son Staley (future mini star!) and I may venture out to spectate.....if I can stand to just watch.
WillPhx: Leave your suspension on the settings that you have been riding it on. You know how the bike reacts and you are used to it, and the week before a race (especially your first!) is not the time to be tweaking the clickers. Just make sure that your sag is set at 100 MM (per your manual). Remember that "race sag" is the most critical setting to have right. Don't worry so much about your suspension. You do, however need hand guards (I have a spare set of Acerbis MX-style laying around the garage if you need them)Good luck and most importantly have fun! (Ooh.......watch out for the cholla too!)

The dust has settled and the results are headed for the books.
There were 140 bikes, not sure how many quads showed.
Destry took the overall win (no surprise there ;)), he passed me in the big sandwash, a flash of green, a spray of sand and he was gone :D.
Any how, Phil and I had our hands full as the 700 class was full up, 15 racers. Phil #777 took home the fourth place honors, I took home second.
Willphx got to meet Destry on the poker run, he had fallen in one of the sand washes and Destry stopped to pick him and the bike up [8D].
BTW: I had replaced my hand grips with new O'neals (my old grips were trashed out). I can't recommed the O'neal grips, the compound must be to hard, my hands are hamburger. I'm glad Destry lapped me, I don't think could have ridden a 4th lap. :(

Good Job Rick! Rick did come over the finish line 1st, only to be beated on time by Jim Chapmen. Rick & I did compare hand blusters after the race, he did win on that as well[:0].OOCH, they hurt today!I met up with Destry on the pre-run & asked him to wave when he put a lap on me. He did keep his promise and waved as he lapped me 4-5 miles out on the second lap. I saw him for a blink of the eye, then he disappeared into the desert. Good job Destry & glad to see you back in top riding form:D Rick, I think my wife just made some kind of deal on your travel trailer. You might just have to find a new toy hauler! How did the rest of the RAers finish?
Did the course go clockwise or counterclockwise this year? I like it better clockwise because there is more technical stuff right off the bat so the field gets spread out more right away.

Only RAers I know of participating were, Phil, Will and me. Will fell down in a sand wash (no lasting damage :)) Phil and I finished as above. The course ran counterclockwise. I had my money in early for this one so I had a good pil. I couldn't run down any of the 600s, so after I passed the 700s that were in front of me, I had a fairly dust free ride [8D]. I liked this course, only prob was I cleaned the skid plate off the pig. I collapsed the suspension and I wasn't on flat ground :( the front attachemt bolts are still there with bits of skid plate still sandwiched between the frame and the bolts. The rear bolts were not so fortunate, they were pulled from the frame. Anyone have a deal on a CLAMP ON skid plate for a XR650R ;)

I raced it, if you could call it that. You might have seen me after the race. I was curled up in the fetal position underneath a white chevy blazer. The dirt was nice and cool under there. I heard many of the quad racers did the same. Those that were still able to stand were cleaning the blood off there hands.
The bike race was split into two races because of the large number of bikes that showed up. The quads didn't start until some time after 1pm I believe. It was a little warm. I don't remember that course ever being that rough.

Jeff, Now you know what it's like. They always run the trucks/ buggies on saturday and on sunday the quads are first then the first bike race next, and sometime during the hottest part of the day on sunday afternoon they let the Pro bikes run a extremely chewed up race course. I feel your pain brother, I've been doing it that way for several years.
There is always the guy who raced the course early on in the weekend that will come up to me and say that he had lap times that where close to ours. Nobody realizes how tore up a race course gets through out a weekend of racing it. Our courses in Az. are shorter than most other Orginizations race courses and we have twice the number of riders. By the last lap of the last race I am usually telling myself that I am going to retire from racing forever.

Your right, it does seem the quads have been racing first quite a bit this year. I think we raced last at Wickenburg in 2001 though. I remember it was really hot then to. I don't remember it being near this rough though, and I've raced Wickenburg a handful of times. I remember when it had the powerline road with all the g-outs. I'd say this years race was even harder than the Cinders race.
Like you, I was telling myself I was done with desert racing. Point to Point should put an end to those thoughts. Then again, I guess we need a good beating to shake things up a bit.

I also ran my quad at Wickenburg and had a very bad day. My body was not up to the task on Sunday. I do not know if it was the heat, the rough course, or having to pre-run the course the same morning. I have a feeling it was a combination of all three. All I know is that I felt so bad throughout the 2nd lap, I parked my bike in our pit after I finished the 2nd lap. What a wuss!!!
I did end up going out for a third lap after a good 15 minutes in the pits (damn points). In the end, I finished three laps, and got fourth place in ATV2 (only 6 at the race). I guess its time to start going to the gym again.

GYM!!
Heck no, just get out there and ride. It's the best exercise. Try so MX, it's %100 percent better than working out because you actually condition the muscles you need for riding and it also helps your Cardio.
Of course not much could prepare you for hours of nothing but square edges.

If you raced an ATV at Wickenburg, then you're in there at least twice.
