View Full Version : Anyone tried this? OK....anyone wanna try this?
The trail to these mines branches off the Coke Ovens route fron Florence Junction.
They say there are by-passes around alot of the big stuff.
Any input on this?

Nort and Hairback did this trail a couple of months ago. They made a DVD of some of the trail and it looks pretty cool. There were bypasses in most places, but they did use a winch in one spot. Don't know if there was another way around or not. This then lead them to a trail called Hell Hiway. I am riding with them this weekend in Tucson I will inquire about it as I would like to do this run as well. I am hoping to get a winch for christmas so I will be armed and ready.

Have you been up that wash/canyon that is pictured on that link? Mike and I went quit a ways up it is pretty narly but a lot of fun. Talk to some guys in Jeeps that were headed that way and have been there before it takes you to highway to hell. It's a rock climbing festable.
I'm game also.....:D

I haven't been up there, but thats what explorin' is all about. Not out to kill myself, just checking out the back roads. If I can't make it within my comfort zone, I'll turn around. ;)

I am going to see Nort and Hairback this weekend. I will ask if a two wheel drive can make it and if a winch is a must. I have one quad with a winch, but not sure if my father in law is up to the rock crawling this trail has on it.

Personally, I'll be taking the easiest line I can find. If I get to a point where I cant make it, that'll be the end of the trail for me. Don't really want to get into a situation where I'll be needing a winch or have a quad on top of me. [8D] But ya just never know.....
Smoke,
I'll be riding a Foreman but I'll have a tow strap with me. :D

Just have some sticky tires. YOU CAN DO IT ! the easiest way isn't always the most fun though, Your bike will get some new scratchs and dents I promise other wise it just not fun.Man I wish I could post 1 of the vids from this past weekend, Glenn knows I sent them to him. It's not that bad it's just a s- load of fun and there a lot of semi smoother ways but were the fun in that.

When are ya thinkin' o' doin' this ride, gdavis?
It's been on the list fer a long while...
Definately one of my favorite areas. Hella ridin' there.
If it works fer me (off), might make a w'e of it.
Ain't skeert (yet. always different live as opposed to memorex)
Got Bunk, got Dirt Devils, will travel.
My reference shows the Woodpecker/Ajax loop as not including the Highway to Hell. Even with out the Hell Hwy it is rated as "difficult"/jeep, but that most all gnarly sections have a bypass.

Cool pictures of fun lovin navigators and spectators. No shots of driver's faces. Looks like there's been some rocks stacked to assist the SUV city slickers. Even still its a challanging fun ride for the big 4x4s. Its a breeze for quads and bikes.

Me an Nort tackled Upper Wood Pecker and started Hwy to Hell but it just got to hot for me out there. Now that it has cooled off I would love to try completing HWY to Hell. The trail would be a lot of work for a sport quad. Most of the bad stuff can be bypassed with lesser terrain but still not what I would call easy. There is one spot that if you don't have a winch that can be done with some spotters. Once you reach the beginning of HWY To Hell most will just look a short way down the trail and turn right back around. It looked to me like a good time but most folks don't like that slow tedious lifting, pulling and yanking type of riding. I also want to try Lower Wood Pecker and upper and lower Ajax. I hear they are a real doozy as well.
I have also found a awesome wash for rock crawling folks on the Queen Valley Trail. My wife and I tried it and had a real good time. It is a perfect trail because those that like to watch that stuff can stay on the road just above the wash. It is a great place to watch and take pictures of the action. My wife is actually getting real good at the rock crawling stuff. She went up two obstacles I had to winch over. That was a real ego crusher. O well I will get her next time. :)
