View Full Version : Javalina in Unit 6A?
My son and I spent the weekend up at Clints Wells. On an ride, my son spotted a pair of boar like animals walking through the forest. By the time I caught up to him I was able to get just a glance at these two critters. They were brown, and big like a hog or pig. (read as big gut :D) My son said that they had snouts like a boar. I have seen plenty of Javalina in my days and these did not look like a Javalina.
Bears? Cubs?
Coati's? Never seen those up that high though...
We used to see a lot of Javelina up by the Stoneman Lake exit off I-17. In the pines and brush.. Never heard of them over as far east as Clint's however...
I've heard stories that there were farrell hogs in that area many years ago but that they had been killed off. Maybe not?

Wish you could have gotten a picture. :( Steve is right, there used to be feral hogs in the Blue Ridge area. Since they are not a native species they can be hunted anytime.

X3 on the feral pigs, Ive never seen a javelina fat enough to be considered hog like:) They used to be thick in jacks canyon, maybe there is a couple left. They are very distructive to the landscape, they root up everything. Lets go huntin!

Elk season back in November I found myself in the middle of a herd of 10-12 javelina west of Clints Wells off FH3 on the road to the V-V ranch. That is the highest elevation I have seen javelina, on my GPS it was 7000+. I have also seen them off of Stoneman lake road, and down towards Pine. I haven't seen any feral hogs up there, but I would sure like too. Great bbq, no limit, and no season.

A friend of mine has a cabin about 1 mile from Mormon Lake Lodge. He has seen javelina at his place several times over the years.
I have seen bear up there. So AAA had a good idea.
