View Full Version : Firearms training for RA members
Since the discussion of carrying firearms while riding is a big topic right now, I thought I would provide an opportunity for RA members.
I am a police officer and I own my own training company. I have been a firearms instructor since 1997 and my company has been around since 1998. I am willing to put on a CCW class for those RA members who are interested in getting the training. It's a 1-day class and it would be held at Ben Avery Range (I-17 & Carefree Hwy). If there are enough people interested, then I will reserve a range on a Sat or Sun that accomodates the most people. If needed, I can put on a few classes.
Also, I teach an 8-hour course for L.E. called "Firearms for ATV Operators". I am willing to provide this class to those RA members who have a CCW permit. On my old web site, I had a promo video for this course. I have put a link on my new web site for you to view the video so you can see what the training involves. I apologize that the video quality is poor. The video is from 3 years ago and I wasn't using the best equipment at the time. The video is approx. 1 minute long (20 MB), so it may be slow to download depending on your internet connection.
My web site address is www.pro-activetraining.us
Go to the "General Public" page and look for the small blue "RA" link at the bottom right corner of the page.
If enough people are interested in the ATV firearms course, then I will schedule a class for sometime in the fall. It's too hot in the summer for this class. I only charge $100 for this class also.
No one else provides a class like this for civilians. This is an opportunity for CCW carrying ATV riders to participate in law enforcement level training. AND, it's a fun class!
If you are interested in either training opportunity, let me know.
Stay safe!

I'm definitely interested in the ccw class. Approximately how much per person would this cost? After completing the class what is involved to get the ccw permit?
I'm interested in both. Just let me know when...

Guns and ATV's...
...the only thing missing is beer[:p]
Oh wait that would only apply if the training was at Sycamore or Table Mesa Road[xx(]
I guess they'll be teaching gun safety instead ;)

this is a great opportunity for most RA members (wife told me absolutely no guns in the house so its not for me) but i know about 80% of RA has guns so this would be a fantastic class to take even if you use the best techniques for gun safety. Thanks Jason for this awesome opportunity for most RA members!! :D

Im in for the CCW.
I'd be in for the CCW as well.
From the growing list that wants the CCW, you should bring another cop buddy to be on Spitball watch..............;)
The cost for the class is $100. The cost for the permit is $65. That is paid to DPS. The permit is good for 5 years, and there is no more renewal class. When it comes time to renew, you just submit the application & fee again. After you take the class, you have up to 12 months to submit your application and $65 (it just changed from 6 months). So, the only cost up front is the $100 for the class.
It looks like there is some interest for both classes. i will work on setting up a CCW class in July. I will look to do the ATV class sometime in October.

How about a tactical rifle course? What's the carbine home defense about? I've had my ccw for over eight years and I spend a lot of time at Rio Salado.
The Carbine Home Defense course is basically a tactical carbine course for civilians. The emphasis is on close range application (50 yards and in) since that would be the case if you used a carbine for self defense at home or for camping. Topics would include zeroing, practical accessories, tactical & empty gun reloads, malfunction clearance, transition to handgun, positional shooting, shooting from cover, close quarters shooting, static/tactical/dynamic movement, low light shooting, etc.
It almost mirrors our L.E. Adv. Carbine Operator course. There are a few things we don't teach in the civilian class.
If you're interested, find some more people. I need 8 to do a class.

I'd be interested in all of these if nothing else than to gain knowledge on these subjects to ensure I'm making the right decision. Are any of these open to beginners? I have time "behind the trigger," but I by no means would consider myself more than a NEWB!
I am also interested in the ATV course. Thank you for offering it.
All of my civilian courses are designed for beginners.
Oh no the only weekend I have off in July is the Cinders race.
Bump...Jason...per our agreement, I have moved this topic here.
How old do you have to be to have a CCW?

My wife and I were going to take the CCW back in May but couldn't because of scheduling reasons, but both of us are definitely in, including the ATV course. Thanks for the offer.

I would imagine if you're old enough to own a handgun, you could get a ccw.

Legally 18?
I think you have to be 21 to own a hand gun.
18 to own a handgun (as a gift). 21 to purchase a handgun. 21 to attend the CCW course. Additional info about the CCW course (including requirements) can be found at http://www.dps.state.az.us/ccw/default.asp
So without a CCW, i cant LEGALLY carry a handgun with me on the trails since im 18?

As long as it's open carried you can.
Redneck is right. As long as it's open carry, you can have it. On your own private property is the only place you can carry concealed without a permit.

Count 2 more for the ATV Class, it sounds interesting - we already have CCW permits.
Count me in along with the masses, both courses.

I don't think you have to re-test to re-new.
Just send the app. and the $65 to DPS.

It figures, it is the day after I leave for a 2 week trip back east....:(:(
Jason, do you do the fingerprints that day also?
I should be able to. My fingerprint board went dry, but I think I can get another. It shouldn't be a problem.

Looks like I won't be able to take the class. Schedule conflict
I'll have to make the next one. We're in the white mountains that weekend. :(
Jason, this still planned? I've rearranged my schedule to make it so I hope so. Thanks Tim
The ATV / Handgun Class in October is still a GO. But, we are falling a little short on the CCW class this coming weekend. I still need about 6 more people to enroll. If I don't have it by Wed I will have to cancel the class. Which one are you interested in?
