Okay, gonna let you in on a little secret, Just across the border in New Mexico, north of I-10 from Lordsburg is the Burro Mountains, a part of the Gila National Forest. Riddled with old mines, trails and mining roads is some fantastic riding. I have mapped over 400 miles of trails on my GPS. From fast sandwashes to tight wooded trails, with great camping. Elevation ranges from 5,000 to 8,000 ft. It can get a little hot in the middle of the summer, at least until the rains start, and it is definetly cold this time of year. It is beautiful riding, not whooped out at all. I have a new shop, ATV Mountain Cycle in Silver City, come by and I will give you a map and show you where to ride/camp. Oooo, hey, I will attach a map here of the middle/best part we call Willow Creek. This is about 15 miles west of Silver City, and only about 20 miles from Arizona. Enjoy.

From Mesa to Silver City is about 310 miles via I-10, about 5-6 hours if you're pulling a trailer.

Phoenix is pretty far. You can take I-10 through Tucson, which is farther, but faster, or go through Globe and Safford, then cut over toward Morenci, go through 3-way and head for Mule Creek, New Mexico, then hook up with U.S. 180 on in to Silver City. (Kinda like going to Hot Wells but instead of making a right onto the gravel road, you go another couple of miles and make a left). It is a lot shorter, very picturesque, but won't save you a minute. Phoenix is about 4 & 1/2 hours away. Or just take 80 (?) through Globe all the way to Lordsburg and then take N.M. 90 up to Silver.

Here's another map with Silver City in the picture

This certianly looks like a promising area. 4-6 hours away also sounds attractive for 4 day weekends.

My interests are mountain rides, trees, open fields, and challanges. Along with riding is to understand the history of the area. Ameature prospecting is also an interest, so old mines and such are a plus. Prospecting to me is the metal detecting of course but also the minerals. I wouldn't call myself a rock hound but simular.

Summer temperatures are not sounding attractive when the word HOT is used. Does "hot" mean the samething there as it does here in Phoenix?

This might be worth a 4 dayer to explore this spring. This would be a little more interesting doing it with others in the RA group.

Sorry, I guess I shouldn't have used the word "Hot" around you AZ guys. Max temp in the summer would be 100. In the winter there is snow at the higher elevations, I have four-wheeled through two feet in some spots. For us 100 is unbearable, we skip July till the rains start. We always get monsoons. This is right on the Continental Divide. We are on the tail end of the Rocky Mountains. Nearby, in the Gila Wilderness, peaks reach almost 11,000 ft. We can ride near there, up to 9,000 from farther north near Glenwood, but that is another story, and I don't have that area fully reconoitered,,,yet.

I have done a couple of day trips in this area a year ago. I went in on a dirt road about 8-10 mi. from the state line on hiway 70. Plan on going back when it warms up this spring. Some of the roads we came across were improved can you tell me what N.M. policy is on ATV licenseing? We didn't worry because everyone was licensed in Az. Railman

The ONLY agency looking is the U.S. Forest Service, and that is where this is. Out of state or New Mexico registration is all that is required. So you guys registered in Arizona will be just fine over here.
