I found this after re-reading the post and
searching over his site [:I]
"Once enrolled, we will send you an equipment list for the course. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask."

I thought I read that the list was on the website but this class isn't listed with the other classes. It wasn't mailed with the enrollment confirmation either, so I thought I'd ask. After all, I might have to buy more shooting equipment (gun belt, holster, mag carrier, etc.) or quad accessories (gun rack, swivel mount for the M2... [:0] ). I don't think I can use the class to justify another pistol, campershelley is on to that one. ;)

this weekend ?
Send him A PM ;)
For this class, I am putting together the flyer that will permanently be on the web site...like the other PDF files. It's not done yet. Hopefully, by 4th of July. Anyway, we are a few months out, so we have some time. For now, the you will need your ATV, all safety equipment for riding (gloves optional), handgun with at least 2 magazines, belt hoster (with some form of retention device) and magazine pouch, 300 rounds of ammo, eye/ear protection and a hat with a brim, snacks & drinks (hydration pack recommended).
We will be training using a standard belt hoster. No fanny packs. Although fanny packs will keep your gun cleaner during riding, there is the issue of the gun pointing sideways (at other people) when on the firing line. The concepts learned from a belt hoster are easliy adaptable to a fanny pack when you go riding later. I recommend a leather hoster with a thumb break retention, or a Kydex holster in which the gun has to "click" into place. I DO NOT recommend a universal nylon holster, especially with a velcro strap over the top (not very practical for quick draws) as they typically have too much play and may allow your handgun to fall out during riding. A pre-shaped holster for your specific make & model will serve you best for ATV riding. If you want my opinion on a certain holster, let me know.
As you can imagine, this is a dirty class. EVERYTHING will get very dirty, including your handgun. It's the nature of the beast. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.
I hope to see you guys out there. BTW...there are only 7 slots left.

Call me naive... but could you tell me the purpose of your "handgun training for ATV operators" course? What are the end results?

Will we need a helmet, or can we use "ear muff" style hearing protection?

Is a standard Fobus paddle holster acceptable? They aren't as stiff as Kydex, but they do utilize the "click".
We're definitely looking forward to the class!
thx,
John
PS The check's in the mail.
Hey RodeHard,
That's a good question. First, we spend the first few hours reviewing basic skills needed in a gunfight...weapon presentation (efficient drawing), marksmanship, reloads, malfunction clearance, and especially weapon-handling skills. Then we spend a few hours reviewing basic riding skills...evasive turns, speed braking, etc. After lunch, we put the two together. The goal is to get the ATV operator some experience in transitioning from riding to gunfighting in a compressed time frame. Making the decision to shoot from the ATV or dismount first and use the ATV for cover. Threats will not always be to your front, so we engage targets to each side of the ATV. The idea is to give you exposure, so if you happen to get into a deadly force confrontation while riding your ATV, how you should respond will be familiar to you, reducing the panic affect because you have never experienced the situation before.
44mag,
You will need the helmet for riding. You may want to wear the foam ear protection underneath, depending on how tight your helmet is against your ears. The earmuff style protection can be worn when we are doing strictly handgun training. As for the Fobus holster, I can let that one pass depending on your handgun, and if it's drop-safe. We are a few months out, so if you can get another Kydex holster, that would be better. Look at it as an investment on the protection of your handgun.:D
The info for the ATV class is now posted on my web site. Disregard some of the LE items on the required equipment list. Bring what applies to you, and bring your valid CCW permit. Here is the link to the web site: http://www.pro-activetraining.us/le_courses.html
We will not be doing any nighttime training for this class, as that requires some previous training in shooting with flashlights and weapon-mounted lights first. This class will be all daytime training. 8 AM - 5 PM. If you have any questions, let me know.[8D]

I'll check out the different Kydex holsters and compare them. The only Kydex holster I have is for a different pistol (HK USP) and it doesn't retain the weapon, or facilitate the draw, as well as the Fobus.
Maybe I'll try a few somersaults, if my Sig stays in, it should work for the class :D
What firearms training is expected as prerequisite for the class?
thx,
John
Have you tried the Serpa holster by Blackhawk? Here is the web site: http://www.blackhawk.com/product1.asp?P=4105 The holster is designed with a release button that is positioned where your trigger finger should be when drawing. You do not have to press the button to holster your gun. It locks in automatically, which allows you to quickly secure your weapon. I have one for my Glock 21 & 22, and for my Springfield XD. It's a very good holster. They make them for the USP and SIG. I know you can get it at the Crossroads Gun Show (which is coming up on July 7 & 8 at the State Fair Grounds), Scottsdale Gun Club, or on-line.
Obviously the CCW class is a prerequisite. Although the new 8-hour CCW class doesn't give you enough range training, I'm more concerned about knowing the laws and the background check. As long as you are familiar with the basics of drawing, marksmanship, reloads, malfunction clearance, and weapon-handling skills then you will be fine for the class. We are going to review them anyway because it's always good to practice the basics. Maybe I can help some folks refine their skills. If you are rusty on the basics, I will get you up to speed before we jump on the ATVs. :)

Jason -
I noticed in your "Other Certifications" that you list Divemaster and Search & Recovery Diver. Do you dive with the Maricopa County Sheriff's group?
No, I don't dive for MCSO. I got those certifications in preparation for testing with the Dive Team on my dept (Phx PD). I later opted not to test. I got 3 buddies on the dive team and they keep telling me to test, but something about diving nasty canals is kind of a turn off for me.
I did some Divemaster work for a local dive center for 2 summers, but I didn't do it enough to justify the insurance I was paying every year. I just dive for fun now. In fact, I am off to San Carlos, Mexico in a few weeks for a weekend dive trip [8D]

The canals here aren't too bad, unless you're bagging somebody who's been in the summer sun for a couple days.quote:I did some Divemaster work for a local dive center for 2 summers, but I didn't do it enough to justify the insurance I was paying every year.I'm in the same boat.
