Well i never thought this day would come ,All off road areas with in the phx city limits are now CLOSED !While checkin out the PPeak And Tatum riding area police told me about thier enforcement .Due to the dust laws there will be no off roading with in the city limits , including BLM and STate or county lands . If its within the citys limits they are inforcing Dust laws .So that means ride w/ caution or not at all w/in the phx area. The sgt told me he has been told it does not matter if they are on BLM state or country lands permit or not , you will be cited .I was ran off and i was just scouting the area for a ride the next day !He said no riding on non dust controlled areas ,No parking on non dust controlled areas. That means you ,your bike ,and your truck, and trailer will all get tickets .Guess this means more drive time to ride.He also said the BLM and state has 2 guys doing enforcements and the mayor and gov said the cops need to enforce the areas , and thats what they are doing .CRRRRRRRRAP.[}:)]:(:(

Gotta love the new Gov, and all her new enforcements. I read somewhere she is a tree hugger at heart. What's next, close the racetracks for dust? We have a hard enough time riding on BLM and state lands without being pushed off. I cannot believe the city's are pushing the dust ordinances, must be a California thing. Cant have the dust in the air (gee we live in the desert). Sorry but it just irks me to hear this. I feel sorry for all you who live in or around Phoenix, ya gotta drive farther to go riding now.

azscooter,

Just curious were you riding on the east or west side of Tatum?

So does this include peoria citylimits like by canyon raceway or behind wildhorse, what about in scottsdale at the watering hole?

Sounds like he may have been west of Tatum, which is closed and has been for some time now. The waterhole in Scottsdale has been closed for years, too. Most places that are closed are clearly marked with No Motor Vehicles and other signs. That includes a lot of previously open, rideable land that is now considered urban due to new development. Those areas are the most likely to be patrolled. On the other hand, with a new Phoenix mayor coming in and a wacko governor, hard to say what they're telling cops to do. Best advice is avoid riding near developed areas.

Before rumours get out of hand, a phone call to the ASLD is in order.

Until then who really knows what is happening.

First of all this is NOT rumor . I was on the east side of tatum on p-peak ,then went to another north phx location where police were already blocking entrances and staging areas .This is a city of PHX thing right now a dust abatement issue .I was told you could ride on blm or state land even county land .But aslong as it is within the city of phx they will ticket you, your car/truck, and bike/s .The police were really cool w/ me and i did not get a ticket of any kind ,i just left the area .peroira ,mesa , scottsdale, etc as of this moment are NOT pushing this dust law YET .BTW there is a sub station near tatum and p-peak roads so responce time is swift .the sgt said oooh well thats progress .I told them they should then start issuing tickets to the horses and hikers and mt bikers they also kicked up some dust , he laughed .Lastly this was just me passin on info from the PD of phx to me to you do with it what you wish .Personaly i will load up and get outta town to ride . I would rather spend extra drive time and gas money VS a fist full a tickets .

You can add 107th ave and Jomax to that list. There are signs posted everywhere.
What's interesting is last weekend there was an ATV accident at 23rd ave and Greenway prkwy. There is a parcel of State Land there and the Phoenix PD Spokesperson stated that they could ride there due to it being state land. Hmmmmm, It's ok to ride on state land in side the city but you can't ride on the outskirts of the city. Sounds like developers are starting to drool over our riding areas and want to keep us off of it. Can't stop progress. Guess I'll be up by Table Mesa to ride now.

The one time that we have been stopped about being on a certain area it was by a sheriff's deputy. He was very helpful in showing us where we were able to ride though. That was a couple of years ago. Don't know who is doing the "enforcing" now.

Item 12 on the list was a result of one homeowner. This was a good spot for the parents to watch their kids ride. Good visibility and no dangerous ditches or obstacles. This family moved in on the corner of 202 ave and McDowel and right away started to call the sherrif about everything in the neighborhood. We spoke to one of the local sherrif and he told us that this guy was a giant pain in the @$$ calling about everything. So, no riding. Sad thing; I think they moved.

Now people are asking what else is on "the list" ?? Simple if it is within the city of phx period ! i called the city . This comes from the mayor and gov office . Not only does this have to do with people calling in to complain , It has MORE to do with federal money . If we get high particulates AKA dust day warnings we get fined as a state and less highway federal money. Do not be shocked when this goes COUNTY wide .I am done with this one , personally i will just load up and dive outta town .happy trails .Funny how this crept in ,yet i still see illeagal aliens w/ backpack blowers kicking up dust all over town .

I was out at Pinnacle Peak and Tatum yesterday (east of Tatum) and didn't get chased off. Lucky I guess. They need to post the "no motorized vehicles" signs. What is the deal with that anyway? Lots of people go out of their way trying to be leagal. Getting the land permit and following the rules only to be chased off. This bites. I will continue to use that site until there are signs posted otherwise or I am told by the authorities to get off.

The city does not have jurisdiction to post such signs as they do not own the land. The land is owned by the Trust. If they want it closed they have to make their case to the State Trust Land department.

There are two seperate issues being discussed here.

The original issue of the thread was the City of Phoenix enforcing a dust ordinance on State Trust or BLM land that is legal to off roading on.

The later half of the thread is talking about actual State Trust Land closed by the STL department due to dust, soil erosion or whatever reason they state(This is the list MrsScott posted). This issue is not just affecting the City of Phoenix but the surrounding towns and the rest of the state.

I called the Governors office today and spoke to a Mr. Ken Moore... I was told If you have a permit and it is not posted NO Motor Vehicles, then you should be able to ride unless Law enforcements ask you to leave, this usually happens when they get a compliant from some unhappy person seeing the vehicles out there, mostly when they ride next to the roads, kicking up dust...
He said he had NO knowledge of the Governors office closing all Areas in Phoenix... and I would need to call the Board of supervisors and/or Police to find out more information.

So if anyone else wants to try to find out more info Please post what you hear....

One thing I wanna mention is this guy wanted detailed info of where I want to ride and [u]I wouldnt tell him... </u>I was afriad he would send people out to close the areas...:(

Unfortunately, areas that were previously rural and rideable are now fast becoming urban and off limits. It happens everywhere there is growth and development. Best we can do is ride legally and use common sense, like keeping away from populated areas where noise and dust will be an issue. Younger riders likely never even think about this, older ones should know better. Sometimes we're our own worst enemies. We've got to help our own cause, because we're outnumbered by the anti's.

This dust-ordinance crap has been going on in Tucson since the late 80s...didn't know it had hit Phoenix 'til I went to the SX last weekend and got a ticket for parking my FJ12 in the dirt between the sidewalk and the curb. Ticket cited the dust ordinance, apparently it's illegal to park on any surface not covered by concrete.tar/rocks/etc., although the law, quoted in flyer left with the ticket, used the wording "parking lots"...at least Tucson hasn't gotten that nasty towards bikers.

That's too funny. I went too the new Hockey arena on the 11th and half the parking lot was dirt. The dust that was flying after the game was terrible. The city of Glendale could have really raked in some cash had they ticketed all that were parked on the dirt that night and every night till they get it paved. Oh wait a minute, the city of Glendale wants us to visit the arena. Sounds like a double standard to me.

Went to Public Land Information Center to get my STL recreation permit today. The "list" dated June 18, 2003 affects 49908 acres of State Trust Land.
The single largest parcel affected is 35832 acres. This is in the east valley area South of Baseline, East of Maricopa County line.
