I like to invite other dual sports for a ride on 1/10/04. It will be a 150 mile+ ride to a 6,000 peak. We will use Rt. 60 to Wickenburg then west to Aquila to get there and U.S. 10 on the way home in time for some football games. The plan is to meet up for breakfast on or near Rt. 60 around 7 or 8am. Does anyone have a suggestion for some good grub? I would imagine it will be a lot cooler on top of the peak so as the girl scouts say be prepared. Anyone familar with this peak road Im not sure if the road is maintained or not?

Mr. Back,

The Harquahala Peak road is fairly rough for the average SUV driver. You shouldn't have too much trouble though on bikes. It is not regularly maintained by BLM. It is a designated Backcountry ByWay which means it has scenic or historic meaning.

The tin shack at the top is the historic Smithsonian Solar Observatory. It was used in the 1920's to measure solar radiation.

There is a neat 30ft wide county road that goes from Eagle Eye Rd to the end of Vulture Mine Rd. I think it's called the Wickenburg Rd. It's a smooth dirt road that gives you the feeling of wide open spaces since you can look around. Enjoy our great outdoors this weekend!
