View Full Version : Point to Point,-100, Rocky Point Mex.

December 7th.
A beautiful time of the year to be in Rocky Point. The race starts in Sonoyta, just south of the border and heads south to Rocky Point. The first half of the race is the funnest part until you jump onto the Rock to Rock course that's all sandy, silty and whooped out (A typical desert race).
The finish line is at the Oasis bar and grill on the North side of town. Good food, stocked bar, and lodging if you choose.
The best part about any of the Rocky Point races is that they're always on Saturday morning , so you have the rest of the weekend to have fun in Mexico. Actually it's the only good thing about that race. I always stay at the Best Western Playa Bonita. They have a pool, spa and swim up bar. They also have racer discounts. If I have my new bike by then, I'm in.

I love the Mexico races, right up until that LaPinta Beach section. If it's a beach, where's the ocean? That isn't sand either, It's SILT! Knee deep silt to, with jeep ruts buried beneath it. I think I'd rather ride 10 more miles of whooped road instead of that silt.

I had just passed a really fast guy in that section (LaPinta Beach next to the highway) when I looked over to see him passing me back ON the highway. I was in engine case deep silt with both feet down, and he was tapped out on the black top. He went about 100 yards past me then jumped back on the track and crashed his brains out. I pulled up next to him and told him exactly what I thought about him and then I filled his face with silt roost. He also heard about it at the finish line along with the race officials. He never raced Whiplash again. Go figure.
I HATE CHEATERS!!!
BTW Paul, Thanks for giving Sly a bath. Looks good.

Hey guys I have two buddies that are interested in running this race. One hasn't raced in several years and the other I don't think has raced. They will need some assistance. I know you guys are willing to help and it is appreciated.
Also if anyone is looking for any info on rocky point RE:hotels, restaraunts etc. look at www.rptimes.com. I am very familiar with rocky point also so you can pm me with questions. I have a trailer at the playa del oro trailer park.

I'll drive, you race. I'm not in the points hunt as you guys well know
They actually have a rule book? I'm impressed, I thought they were making it up as they went along. <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>
I want to do the Mexico race but I'm not sure about the logistics. Not crazy about my wife driving the truck from Sonoyta to Rocky Point while I am racing.

That would work but I'm thinking you need to be racing that big green machine.
I'm like sixth in points, so I'm not in it either.

Phil,
The pits usually aren't to far off the highway. They are pretty easy to get to, of course they change the course around every year so I may be lying to you. For the most part pitting isn't all that hard. It is pretty hard if not impossible to have only one pit crew for this race. You need 2 different pit crews to hit you on the top of the course, and down on La Pinta beach. I pitted Raper one time by myself in this race, and I was doing 100mph down those torn up highways, and wash board dirt roads in my truck. I made it to the beach with about 2-3 minutes to spare. It was way to close, and way to dangerous to try that again.
BTW, I have a video of him in that race going along side the highway after the beach pit (before it got so tore up). I had my truck maxed out (100mph plus), and Raper just walked away from me. I would catch back up and pass by him when the race course got rough or windy, and then he would real me back in and walk on by again. It's an amazing video except for something happened to the sound on the camera, and it is completely quite. Maybe it had something to do with holding the camera out the window at 100mph while the wind ripped through the microphone.
Green_bugger_huna,
Me doing this race all depends on if I get the new bike first. I don't want to race my 400 on any more wide open, nasty stuff. I'm trying to keep it nice to sell. I just put a top end in it, and I'm getting a bunch of new plastic and graphics.
I will definately do it on the WR450 if I have it by then.

El-Gato, I have a 4 gal tank now, I was planning on one stop. What do you think? I did the Rock to Rock on two stops with a 2.5 tank and still had about 3/4 gal left. the XR400 seems to get pretty good milage. I did 80 miles at Snowflake on aprox 5 to 5.5 gal. thx, Phil # 777
I wouldn't push it. That real deep silt and never ending whoops down there really eat the fuel. Whenever you go to Mexico you can count on your gas milage being a lot less than normal. I can get about 58-62 miles on a tank on my YZF in any normal race but only about 50 tops in Mexico.

WOW that 400 sucks the gas, I did the 80 miles at Snowflake on 2.76 gallons of fuel.
I need to go to the gas pump, fuel it up and see what it burned in the 72 miles of knucklebuster. I doubt it will take 2 gallons, I'm thinking I could have done it with my stock tank.

Well now in Snowflake I can do Like 65-70 miles on my desert tank. It's that deep deep, deep dark silt down in Mexico that will burn the fuel. Plus those XR650's get excellent gas mileage. They have so much horsepower they don't have to work as hard to get the same results as the smaller bore engines.
I do believe Eric Brown on his XR650 only stops once in Mexico, but he sure cuts it close.

Gato- My riding buddies and I have always been interested in Mexico racing. I've been concerned with the sweeper not coming for hours/days if you break down, and the fact that the nearest hospital is hours away if you happen to get hurt. Can you elaborate?
*On a side note, we're also trying to plan a ride from Rocky Point to El Gulfo for the night and back. Has anyone done this? Thank you, KTManiac (Erik)

Rick, Erik, I'll be teaming up with Parks #114, Ramoes # 245, and serveral other riders in the 400 # 500 class for Mexico. We will have 3 or 4 pit crews already staged ahead.( where ever pits are establist by Whiplash) Each crew will wait for last rider through before moving on to finish line. You guys feel free to join us at the start if you need help pitting. Also Erik, The sweepers start out right behind last bike off line. Medics will be out with radios along the course. They can call for a 4x4 to pick up any injured rider out on course. If needed to be flown out, they will drive you to boarder to catch a bird. Most likly flown to Tucson or to Phx to any head injury. Rick, I'll see you at Wickenburg. Stop by if you help pitting there. Phil brooks # 777

I hope to see you all there in Rocky Point. I have taken the year off for personal reasons but will return for the Point to Point. I hope my new 525E will be under me at that time. If not i'll be on the trusty 300M. This race is my favorite, lots of fun...
See Ya all there!!!

I haven't seen any action in this thread for a while. Who's going to Mexico for some sand, silt, and Corona's?
It doesn't appear that my new bike will be in so I won't be racing this one. I am going to try to make it to the Gran Prix thingy in Rocky Point in January. I may try to make another run at the points next year after a two year injury lay off.

Hey sorry Erik, I somehow missed this post before.
The sweepriders do take a long time to reach you in this race because it is a Point to Point race. However, there are hundreds of racers on the track at the same time so if you're hurt someone will make sure you're taken care of. Racers seem to stick together more at Mexico races than others, because we all fear being stuck out in the Mexico desert alone for hours. Whiplash has a couple really cool emergency vehicles that rush out and pick you up. As far as the hospitals are concerned, I don't believe they are all that bad. The doctors and nurses are plenty qualified to tackle just about any emergency. I've known peolple that have been in Mexico hospitals, and none of them had any horror stories. It's just the communication gap that sucks.
