I have never camped at Ogilby but want to give it a try. I always camp at Buttercup but do most of my riding at Gordon's Well. Do I need a 4x4 to haul my 26' toy hauler into the camping area. Where is the best place to camp?
Thanks,
Jeff

You do not need 4x4 for ogilby. there is a hardpack road all the way in. We haul our 30' (heavey) Gear Box in a couple weeks back with a 2wd 2500 Avalanche.

Most folks like to camp in close proximity to the Radio Tower. As it provides a nice beacon for finding your way home at the end of a long days worth of riding.

We love Ogilby camping lotsa diffrent types of dune stuff for everyone in the family.

No 4WD required to get to the tower. Just be aware --- It's a fairly long ways to get to the "real" dunes from the tower if you have a ride that does not have a long range fuel supply. We used to go to the tower but found it is too far from the big dunes & to long of a dirt road to get to the tower area.
Buttercup or Gordon's is a far better choice. IMHO so I don't get flamed ....;) And there is not the train running by all the time...

RatherB, Its definately your opinion[:0], Not sure how humble it is:D.

If 9 minutes a long ride (to get to the "real Dunes") and renders you without enough fuel for the rest or your ride, maybe you should consider a guad slightly larger than 50cc's;):(. From the tower thats all it takes to get the telehone pole leading into patton valley. Large (very large) dunes are just to the left (South) of the pole.

Seriously........(There is kind of a wash that leads straight through the small stuff. Because it's straight you can move pretty quickly through that small stuff if that's not your style.)

Anyone who has never been to Ogilby should really try this location especially if your going with children or entry level riders.

The reason it takes 9 minutes to get to the real big dunes is because there is about a 4 mile section of small dunes and flats that seperate Ogilby from the "real Dunes". Which is truely a great training ground.

As far as the Train goes from Dec 26 till Jan 1 I can't remember hearing it even once. That's not to say it didn't go by,,, Maybe we were having too much fun to notice.

One of my absolute FAVORITE parts of every ride from Ogilby is the "transition dunes" between the tower and the telephone pole leading into Patton Valley. I love being in a long train riding through the smaller dunes when the leader gives a thumbs up on the landing area and then getting to watch as each successive rider launches (or not) off the "jump". The telephone pole is then a good spot to meet, rest for a second (if needed), and then head out to Patton Valley or the bowls. I know that everyone has their favorite camping/riding spots at the dunes...but Ogilby is by far MY favorite spot. One other thing to consider...on a busy weekend I've found the sand around Ogilby to be MUCH less chewed up. May not be an issue for those of you with good aftermarket suspensions...but it sure is nicer for me and mine who are all still riding on stockers.

Thanks Jwalk - I knew I could count on to throw some slam at me...

I tried to give the guy my view of the area and that's all....

It was decent area for the first couple times my wife was learning how to ride ATV's. As for going with the guy's for hard riding - there are better areas. The light tower is a great land mark for night rides - the Poles good for in & out land marks. As for me riding my 50 -- I'll try to move up to something bigger as you suggested....Thanks

Olgibly was awesome last week!! I would say camp just behind the microwave tower next to the mini dunes (great place for kids to ride) and the big dunes at gordons / north buttercup / patton's hill are 5 minutes away! :)

Thanks for everyone's responses, we are heading to the area in February but I don't think I will be able to talk the other families into going there, they camp in tents and like restrooms nearby. I will take my family there soon by ourselves to try it out. We usually ride on the east side of Gordons Well and camp at the west end of Buttercup, to far of a ride.
Thanks,
Jeff

That sounds like a good plan. Try it see what you think for yourself. As you can see I do not care for that area as much as others, but I also go to ride big dunes as the #1 priority and the high perf. machines I ride use lot's of fuel which means I need sand close[8D] Be aware the road back to Olgy also is a sand / rock / gravel mix that is hell on your trailer & I drive slow on dirt roads. But, check it out - Anywhere there is sand is good...:D

RathrBdunin,

What kinds of high fuel consuming machines do you run?

CR's - Tecate's - 400's Honda & Kawasaki's - 250r's -- the only thing I have that can go for long range is a Polaris that my wife learned to ride on. That Polaris is the only ride with large fuel capacity. Darn CR only gives me one hr run time. About the only other that allows some range is the KFX if you cruz it.

We camp just north of I-8 west of Ogilby Road. There is enough space for an army. It is a little far to the dunes, about 4 miles. The access is 2WD friendly. Just my thoughts though.

We like ogilby for a family area since our younger son is starting up. Gives him space to move and I am not so paranoid. For an adult weekend make it gordons well for us. We are trying out buttercup in feb so we can see how that goes.
