View Full Version : Buttercup questions
Hi all,
Going to Buttercup the weekend of the 17th of Jan. Just wanted to know, where is the best location to camp? Staying only 2 days.
Thanks in advance.

Every spot at Buttercup is great. We like to go in the main entry [ don't forget permit at the stop sign if you do not alreadt have one] then head east down the paved road which parallels the dunes and dead ends. We then head across the flats & camp couple hundred yards off the paved road right up next to dunes - In two seconds from camp you are in some of the sweetest bowls you will ever find. Pit toilets if required are within walking distance, trash dumpster on the way out of the camp grouds. When you arrive take a little drive up & back on the paved road so you can check out all the areas available to camp. To the west on the road ends up at Midway camp area. This is also a great area. Good luck - Have fun. I Plan on being there myself for 4 days next week.

Jerry, have fun on your dune trip. My friends are going that weekend also but I will be hunting.

You can't go wrong anywhere you choose at Buttercup. Buttercup (cul-de-sac), Middway or even Plank Rd. ar all excellant area some are just closer to the dunes than others.:)[:p]:)

Thanks guys,
I'm sure it will be a ball. The only hitch is trying to keep up with my brother-in-laws YFZ450. That bike is just too fast. We just let him go & play catch-up the rest of the day. It's either that or eat sand.

How crowded will Buttercup cul-de-sac be for MLK? If someone gets there late Friday will finding a camp spot be a hassle?
Thanks.

Thanks for the info...I guess all you folks that camp at Buttercup all the time never go on a holiday weekend or don't arrive on Friday night or don't camp at the Cul-de-Sac or really only go once a year, but like to sound like an expert.
I'd really like to ride at Buttercup, but I just can't commit to driving all the way down I-8 just to find the teeny parking area full and get stuck camping at Gordon's Well.

You might want to camp on the east side of the dunes from Gordon's Well just north of I-8. You won't get stuck there.

OK..."stuck" was a poor choice of words. What I meant was that I'm not a big fan of Gordon's Well. Thanks for the suggestion, but the East side camp areas are a little far from the dunes for me.

They are a little far (gives you a chance to get warmed up) but we have always found ample room to camp and the dust is quite a bit less than Gordon's Well.
