Bob Hirsch passed away today. My sincere condolences to Mary and the rest of the family. I like to thank the family, especially the kids with sharing thier dad with my family (especially my father DeWayne who has been a friend and colleague for more than 40 years). Bob was an inspiriation to all who knew of his work. Godspeed sir, and good hunting.

Bob Hirsch, an iconic figure whose love for the Arizona outdoors helped bring it into the living room through various media outlets, died Friday. He was 79.

Hirsch, a freelance outdoors writer for about 30 years for The Phoenix Gazette and The Arizona Republic, also was the host of a television and radio show geared toward the outdoors.

"He was Mr. Outdoor Arizona," son Steve Hirsch said. "He was pretty much the outdoor mouthpiece for Arizona. He was so kind. More than any single person, he led the way to educate the transient popular without roots here in Arizona about the Arizona outdoors.

"The big part of what he was about was reaching out to people of all walks of life to try and get them to recreate even if they weren't a hunter or trophy fishermen. He wasn't all about hunting and fishing. He would talk to rotary clubs and just everyone about conservation, camping and outdoors recreation."

Hirsch, who Steve said suffered from a series of recent ministrokes that ultimately led to his death, graduated from Phoenix Union High School in 1945 and in the mid-1960s became a public information officer for the Arizona Game and Fish Department.

In the 1970s, Hirsch turned to freelancing for numerous media outlets. He was twice recognized as the Outdoor Writer of the Year by the Arizona Game and Fish Department.

"Bob Hirsch was truly a giant among Arizona outdoor writers," said Duane Shroufe, director of the Arizona Game and Fish Department for more than 20 years. "He introduced generations of people to the enjoyment of fishing, hunting and other outdoor recreation, and he was a strong advocate for our state's wildlife and wildlife conservation."

Steve Hirsch, an attorney who also is the president of the Wildlife for Tomorrow Foundation, described his father as a jack of all trades.

"He was published in a lot of national publications like Field & Stream and Outdoor Life (magazines). He was on TV and on the radio always talking about the outdoors. He also was one of the founders of the Arizona chapter of Anglers United, which is a fish habitat and protective fishery organization."

Hirsch was inducted into the Arizona Outdoor Hall of Fame in 1999, one year after former Sen. Barry Goldwater was elected.

Hirsch also won several awards from the Outdoor Writers Association of America for a radio show he co-hosted with daughter, Ann.

"Bob certainly was the dean of Arizona outdoor writers," said DeWayne Smith, former outdoors editor for The Gazette and a frequent correspondent for The Republic. "The main thing about Bob is he made the outdoors available to people through his writing, his TV and radio shows. He gave them information in how to use the outdoors in a friendly, family style manner.

"He did outdoor cooking demonstrations and made many, many appearances at boat shows and things like that. He was the go-to guy about the Arizona outdoors. He wasn't only a hunter and fishermen. He appreciated and wrote about all facets of the outdoor experience from boating and hiking to camping and wildflower viewing."

Hirsch was an author of several books and for the past 15 years published the White Mountains Map for fishing, camping and hunting.

"Bob has been the voice and personality of Arizona outdoors forever," said Hays Gilstrap, a former member of the Arizona Game & Fish Commission. "He brought to light the beauty and the opportunity of appreciating wildlife and of conserving wildlife. He's been a wonderful spokesman with a great sense of humor.

"He did all this with a great deal of humility. He wasn't braggadocios. He was very humble. One o

I have several of his books and have always been a fan. I always made a point of talking to him when he was at any of the boat or outdoor shows - he was a great guy that would always take time to talk hunting or fishing with anyone.

I am so sorry to hear that.
I would get up early on the weekends just to hear his show.
I really admired him.
Our Prayers go out to the Family.

When I moved to AZ almost 28 years ago, Bob Hirsch was one of the outdoors writers I remember reading about.

Best wishes to his family. Bob will be missed by all Arizona outdoorsmen (and women:)).

I also remember Bob when the Yellow Front Stores were open and he put out a monthly outdoor news letter. Learned of new places and loved to read his stories.

I was at Bob's memorial service on Saturday with the family. Not surprisingly we all ended up telling stories about some outdoor excursion or another. His was a life well lived and one we should all be a little envious of. I was hoping to add a link to the newspaper column that my Dad wrote for last Thursday's outdoor page but alas our "friends" at the "Republic/AZCentral" have not yet found a way to make the "Outdoors" page available online with the rest of the newspaper and/or pop-up car dealer ads..... Arrrrghhh

Growing as a kid in the 60-70s here in Phoenix we all knew him. He will be greatly missed. When I was in scouts in the 70s we always used his papers and books for learning and planning trips.
my prayers go out to his family.

Mary Hirsch, Wife of Bob Hirsch passed away yesterday after a long illness.

Images of the two of them fishing come to mind... The two of them were really like PB&J. It was hard to imagine one without the other.
Thankfully they are now re-united. Thoughts and prayers to the kids and grandkids, and all who were touched by Mary's spirit.
