View Full Version : Duck hunters?
A friend of mine invited me duck hunting. I've never been. I know
I need steel shot, but what size? Any duck hunters out there help
me out.

don't forget to purchase your waterfowl (duck) stamp, along with your hunting license.
I have the hunting license, just need the stamp.

Gonna depend on where you are and what type of duck hunting you are doing. If you are in a blind and shooting birds that are fairly close (20 - 30 yards) you will probably be fine with something in the 3" #6 range. If you're jumping ducks off the ponds and tanks and looking at more like 30+ yards, I'd go with something in the 3 1/2" #2 range. So, but yourself some #4 and be in fine shape either way.
Also, if you are used to shooting lead, maybe get yourself a couple extra boxes and shoot at some clays before you go out on the real thing. Steel shoots much different than lead. Either that, or invest in the HEVI-shot/High Density loads, which shoot more like lead, but can be pricy.
Thanks Webopper, we're going to hunt at Roosevelt Lake. I bought some 3" #3s, and some #4s.

I used to use #4's but that was when lead shot was legal. Post up some pictures when you go. :)
