I hear it was the most miserable race Whiplash has ever put on. I find it hard to believe because I've been in some pretty miserable ones.

Any stories?

Who's telling you that??
I had a blast, yea it's wasn't technical, it was a speed fest but it was racing

NOTHING like a couple of hours of pure adrenaline (sp)

The pig was in hog heaven.

I made three mistakes:
1. I needed to have geared it up some, 99 MPH wasn't fast enough.
2. I should have preregistered earlier, my PIL was 11.
3. I fell down in the last turn before the finish on my first lap (they watered the track in that area and I found the only mud hole on the course).

Reference the above, Kyle Beshaw lapped me 1/4 mile from the finish line, so I didn't get to ride the 5th lap. It's hard to run down the guys ahead of you if you don't get to ride the last lap.

How's them for excuses?

BTW: I took home a 3rd place trophy.

Miserable? Cinders 100, Gila... THOSE are miserable. If your bike had the nuts you were flying! I loved the speed - thank goodness I changed to the 15/45 before I got there , it all was coming back and I was gettin' in the groove when I was reminded why I had Excel rims before. On the third lap I was the victim of some fairly banged up rims and a pair of pinch flats, so I rode 6.5 miles on flats and was done for the day.

The only thing I found to be miserable about it was the mullet-headed a$$es that were blairing AC/DC non-stop Saturday night. I like AC/DC but d@mn, not several hours straight

I am glad to hear you guys had fun. The person I talked too wasn't all that impressed, but that's just one person.

Fistful, good job on your third place.
Kaw_Huna, How where you doing before the flats? I hear the dust was unbearable.

Dayton Raper #99 didn't have that great of a day crashing on the prerun. Me and Dayton have had a tradition for the last few years to go out on the prerun at the crack of dawn before anybody even gets up. It's a blast to ride before sunrise when it's still cool with one of your closet buds. I guess since I wasn't there he went out about 10-15 minutes before any one else by him self. He suffered a crash 5th gear flat out that sent him to the hospital on the four-winged bird. I haven't been able to get a hold of him, but I was told he has a concusion but NO broken bones. That is one of the toughest dudes on earth.
When I hear something I'll let everyone know.

Phil Brooks wrote in another forum (I moved it with his permission because it was off topic). It fits a little better here anyways.

I was about the 10th bike out on the prerun. Apparenty Dayton was the first out. We were stopped at mile #2 and informed that he had crashed hard at mile#6. He had gone out was laying there for 10 to 20 minutes before the next group of riders found him. His helmet was split, his bike thrashed and he had a concusion. He was air evacted out. From what Jay told me that his wife called the whiplash staff and said that he is ok but pretty beat up. Dayton we wish you the best and hope for a speedy recovery. Phil Brooks #777

Big_Kaw_Huna also said that he almost crashed in the same spot as Dayton. I guess it was a rock ledge with no warnings.

I had the opportunity to cheer on some great racers this weekend. John, Rick and Paul did an incredible job. I was very proud of all of their efforts. From what I heard it was a really fast track and we were lucky enough that all guys made it back to camp safe and sound with no major injuries to themselves (except for a few golf-size bruises and dings to the bikes). That is all I can hope for.

Except for having dirt in every niche of our bodies (Rick thanks again for the quick shower..it was heaven)we enjoyed the riding, racing and great conversation with our new friends.

I hope the weekend was great for all as well.

First lap was 31.04, second lap i was getting into the groove and ran a 25.47, and the third lap I could see Fistfull, so we figure that lap was getting into the 23 minute range. I finished that third lap at 31.40 after riding a couple miles on flats and b/s at my pit before Micah (oh man i'm terrible with names AND spelling), jkcmotox's bro, reminded me I had to cross the finish line for that laps credit.

Kaw_Huna, How where you doing before the flats? I hear the dust was unbearable.

The dust was terrible in spots but when the wind picked up there wasn't too much.

MR. and Mr.s Fistfull,

Thank you guys for being such good camp company! Thank you so much for sharing the shower....well, not SHARING the shower, but letting us use it. Rick, you rode a hell of a race and made me proud GOOD JOB!!!

No-Kaw-Honies,

You always make me laugh so hard, thank you. You are such a crack-up. Too bad about the pinch flat, sounds like you were charging pretty hard.

EL GATO,

Too bad you had to miss the "Superfreeway" race. As we staged, Jay told us there was a fire (around mile 16?) and we would have to ride a five lap race around a shortened 20 mile course. I was just glad we got to race, all hell would have broke loose otherwise!

Anyway, it was a really fast course and I had a good time. As far as finish, I finished 4th in my class (the part I am leaving out is that there were only FOUR riders in my class.....but it sounds better that way than saying I finished last in my class :)). Even with that finish, I pulled a good holeshot (if you can call drag racing a KX250 for a mile a holeshot!) and came into the pits 6th OA on my first lap and lost a couple of positions a lap from there out. Although I dont think I had enough gear, I can only blame my lack of conditioning for not being able to hold that pace for 100 miles. I have the speed, and need to switch some habits for more positive ones to benefit my racing.

When are we all going riding. I have already lost interest in work this week and need to feed my addiction.

Anyone that wants to find out how to make a XR400 fly, contact Mr Brooks. I didn't know the little brother XR could move that fast, it took some loooong 5th gear pinned straights to reel him in

I thought this race was great! I loved the high speeds. I held the thottle wide open the whole 4 laps that I completed. I just did not have anything for those big pig 650r's. I felt like I was standing still as fistfull blew by me at least 15-20 mph quicker. I ate everyones dust and felt every rock those big pigs threw at me. Some how I held off the rest of the feild and placed 7th of 17 enteries. Thanks to all you 700's for a great race! I'll try to find more speed for the next one. Phil Brooks #777

I was having a great race in the ATV1 class..right up until the beginning of lap 3. I geared my 250R as tall as it will go (14/36 with 22" rear Razrs). I started in the 4th pill position. They released one quad every 20 seconds because of the dust..and the dust was the worst I've ever seen! I passed the 3rd place pill guy pretty quick and caught pill 2, 13 year old Josh Edwards (Josh won the ATV1 class), near the end of lap one. I couldn't get close enough to him though because the dust from him and Doug Reid (Pill 1- 2nd place) was massive. On lap 2 I took a chance trying to pass in zero visibility and nearly clipped a tree. I decided patience might be a better strategy. At the end of lap 2 I passed Doug Reid who was pitting, and saw Josh entering his pit about 50 yards ahead. I swear he was in and out in about 5 seconds. I need a dry break! I got fueled and got back out just behind Doug Reid. All three of us were battling for a few miles and I had them both on time by atleast 40 seconds, when I noticed a slapping noise. My left front 23" tire was completely flat! I managed to keep the leaders in sight for a while but eventualy drifted back, fighting that flat tire. Then it happened. Out where we used to turn into the woods, there was a chicane (sp?) made out of that plastic orange mesh netting and steel stakes. It was fairly narrow and made us go through an "S" turn. I came in to hot with the flat and took out a few stakes along with a good portion of the netting. #156 on a DS650 passed me while I got my quad started again and back on the course. I was in 4th now. For the rest of the race, I fought that flat tire and destroyed my front rim. It slowed my lap times by abouy 2 minutes. I stopped at the end of the third lap and had some air put in it but it only lasted about 2 miles. I probably should have changed it, but decided to take a chance. There was a small slit in the sidewall. Dust from lapped riders made it hard to get back up to speed but most were nice and moved to the side. I passed #156 back near the end of the race, but only because he was fouling a plug. He managed to get me on time though, along with #169 Jeff Hancock. 5th place it is. I think there was 14 in my class. Points wise in 30+, it was a great race for me. I had a blast! I used every bit of 6th gear. The dust was unbelievable though. Still, it was a great race!

ElGato- I saw a lot of 20 minute lap times in the Pro classes. 20 mile laps puts average speed somewhere around 60 mph for the 2 wheelers!! I saw a few 27 and 28 minute laps for the quads on the 25 mile course. Doesn't get much faster than that!

I've got a few photos of the bike and quad races that I will post as soon as I get my pictures developed.

60 MILE AN HOUR AVERAGE SPEED!?!? THATS ****** INSANE.

The Baja-1000 only sees a 45 mile an hour average speed. They are lucky they didn't get someone killed out there with those speeds and that much dust.

Speed and Dust, that's what it was all about. I would not call it miserable, I had a lot of fun. The dust did make it very difficult to pass. I ended up with a 6th place finish in the ATV2 class. I believe there were 16 riders in my class. I also had a good day for points in the 30+ division, but not as good as Jeff did. (That flat front didn't slow you down enough!)

The BAJA is give/take 1000 miles, a 45 mph average indicates speeds far in excess of what is required to achieve a 60 mph average on a 25 mile course.

I didn't think the dust was that horendous (sp), I get real chicken when I can't see, I slow down. I passed a half dozen guys in the first four miles and that was the dustiest section of the course.

I went riding with Mike Parks and Roe Ramos on saturday ( just met them at Snowflake) Joe has a edelbrock that he pulled off a 2001 xr400 b4 he sold the bike. he offered it for $50.00 . Im am going to cancel my order monday morning ( if its not to late) and try Joes carb out. If I like it I'll buy it. Can't beat that price if it works ok. We'll see.
