What seems to be the best overall rear paddle tire for the dunes? I currently use "Sand Gecko" and have not seen anyone around the Glamis area with this style/brand. My paddles do not appear to be as deep as most and am wondering if I am missing out on some extra traction. I am ride a 400ex... Thanks for any input!

You know i run the Geckos on my DS650 and have been wondering the same thing... I have rode a DS with the sand stars! WOW!! I think the geckos are a bit tall and they create drag on the quad and tires. They sure allow some great power sliding and roosting however. If i did it again i would go with the sand stars... The Geckos do have a mean look to them though! :)

I have 2 Honda 400ex's and have run the STU Sand Skate II's on them. A couple years ago, Dirt Wheels said they were the "overall" winner for the dunes. Now, ITP has come out with the Sand Stars and from what I can see, they might be the tire to buy. If you want to drag, then get a straight across pattern, but if you want to really slide when turning, get either of the two I mentioned above.

I agree with the STU Sand Skate II. Have them grooved to make them even lighter and softer.
In a Sand Sports magazine test years ago, STU grooved Mini Desert Tracks were the best.

I too have used Sand Skate IIs on my 400ex and agree they are a great paddle tire. I've also had good luck with Sand Stars and GBC Sandsharks. Geckos don't appear to be that good...at least for hill racing based on a scientific experiment done at Patton Valley :D: http://www.ridingarizona.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=6764&whichpage=2

I have used Skat Trak's 8 and 9 paddle straits on Banshees, but now I have a four stroke I have been in the market for an angled paddle. I have heard lots of good reviews about the sand star, and not much on the Gecko. What others would you suggest, I want to turn now, the Banshee is gone and so is the stait line supremacy I ride a Predator now.

Thanks for everyone's input on this. I am going to be at Olgilby this Wed.-Sat. and am really thinking about buying a set of Sandstars before the venture down there and doing a comparison at Patton Hill as "nuge" has mentioned. If anyone is going to be there during this time and has a set that they are willing to swap for a few runs up Patton Hill, maybe we could meet up and do some experimenting. Any other input is greatly appreciated!
I have gecko's I preffer the Sand Stars. Stars are talle and provide better hook-up. I pitty anyone behind a pair.

Hey!
I actually agree with jwalk1 for a change...:D
The Sand Starts are great... They hook up nicely, good control.
I know thats hard to believe jack... Burkhadt under control. hehehehe
You can also slide the back end around without feeling like its gonna get away from you.
They are the best of both worlds, strait paddle hookup, with v paddle control.

Just spent my first weekend with the 22 inch sand stars on the DS BajaX and was real pleased, have to keep them spinning to turn but it's just a matter of getting used too it. I'm still adjusting to the 4 stroke so I'm on a learning curve but so far real happy with the tire.

I have the 22" ITP Sand Stars on my 04 DS650 and have absolutely no complaints. They hook up great for the hills and are a breeze to float for a turn, even on a 1/4 ton quad! The only folks who will complain about them are those behind them, they shoot a mean roost when provoked.

For those of you that have Geko tires, run them at a very low psi. I have some 20x10x10 and I felt the same as some of you. I felt I wasn't getting as much traction (roost)as other tires do:(. I lowered the PSI on them and they hooked up much better:). I sold them anyway,[:p] but just some FYI for you. I bought Sand Stars and they are much better:D.

I know this is an old post, but has anyone here tried a straight paddle tire on a DS650? I ran straight paddles on my Banshee, and loved them. However I run Edge paddles on my 400ex since it's alittle underpowered for me. I think the DS has the power to run a straight 9, maybe even a 10 paddle tire, but would like to hear from other DS owners who've done it. Turning is not an issue for me, I just apply more throttle!!!
