What is your opinion of the '03 WR450 for desert racing and trail riding?

I was thinking about trading in my YZ250 for one

You definately wouldn't regret it. I hear it is super fast and light. With the electric start you will never have to kick again, unless of course, the battery goes dead.

Mine will be hear any day.

The new 450F's are just coming out. I don't know of anyone who has taken delivery of the WR yet. Looks like these Yamaha revisions are going to be the rage for '03, though. Just read one of the mag reviews on the YZ450F and it sounds very positive.

If you want to get the real low down on these new machines, check out thumpertalk.com. Not much solid info yet, but once folks start riding them, TT will have the best first hand info available.

Can't wait to see it!

You're not the only one!!!

I will probably wait for '04, but I'm thinking of going from 250F to 450F and I'm curious if the new 450F will be light enough for me. I'll also be interested in hearing about any mods you may end up doing to lighten the WR or otherwise make it more race worthy.

Well I bought a '98 when they were brand new and no body knew a thing about them, and I haven't regreted it. So I am not scared of a new model. I figure they know what they're doing.

So far all I am planning on doing to it is suspension, bars, stabilizer, sparky, and various gaurds (hand and frame). Long term would be header pipe, desert tank, quick adjust chain adjuster and little invisible tricks like porting and polishing. I may remove the battery to save wieght in certain races.

I have heard they are going to be pretty race worthy right from the factory. That doesn't happen much with dirt bikes.

I have a buddy who races a YZF426 that just rode his friends new YZF450, and he says it is a LOT faster than the 426.

I just can't wait any longer. The first delivery date for the WR450's is in December. I've had a deposit on one since June.

Thanks guys for the input. I am really looking forwardto getting one. I am tired of fouling plugs or having to run on the edge all the time just to keep the bike cleaned out. After I get it I am going to want to improve my technical riding skills. Anyone upto showing me some tips and tricks?

All joking aside this is going to be my next bike, WR450.

However, if you are having to run your YZ on the edge and are fouling plugs, then you need to working on the jetting for your bike. I've never fouled a plug on my 500's or my wifes Blasters.

El Gato,

Are you saying that you are going to buy the YZ instead of the WR? I am tempted by it too, but have hesitation due to the 4 speed tranny. I have heard that it leaves the overall gearing the same as the 426 with 14/51 gearing but it has plenty of power to fill the gap of the missing cog. Supposed to be really, really smooth....and 13 pounds lighter!

the jetting on my bike has been changed. the main is down 3 sizes from stock and the pilot is down 5 sizes from stock. It still fouls plugs

One thing you should check into, the type of plug. My KX uses a BR7EVT - very hard to find, though the B7EVT is easy to find. The difference is that mine takes a resistor plug, hence the "R", and if I put the other plug - B7EVT, the plug burns out, it doesn't foul. It just dies after about 30 - 40 minutes.

I know that he has had a deposit down, but in his post, "I can't wait any longer" sounds like like he is going to get the now avaible YZ.

The YZ 450 has been weighed at 13 pounds lighter than a YZ426.......add the WR starter, battery, lights etc and it sounds like it will still out-weigh the 426. Leaves me in a dilema.

1. Race the YZ450 and deal with the 4 speed.
2. Race the WR450 and remove the starter and battery and enduro stuff.

The only thing that I find I don't like about my 426 is the weight. Sure, the WR's magic button would be great sometimes, but for the most part my 426 fires first kick hot or cold (except sunday, when it was vertical and in a foot and a half of leech infested water!).

Both bikes (like always) have their advantages and disadvantages. I guess it comes to personal preference.

I can answer this as I had something to do with it

Thats true, that YZ would be awesome to from what I've read about it - but I think the WR is gonna flat rock!

Jon,

I would never buy a YZF450 with only 4 gears for desert racing. I couldn't even stand the low gearing of my YZF with 5 gears. I had to go with the WR tranny upgrade.

I geared the stock YZF with 15-43 and tried to race it. The darn thing topped off at about 90. I don't care what any body says. A stock YZF geared stock does 75 mph TOPS, geared up to 15-43 it does 90 TOPS. People will try to tell you that their bike will do 117mph and other crap like that. IT IS A LIE. Team green would build their 500's up and gear them 16-42 and they would top out at 112 mph in a dry lake bed with no shrouds or fenders.

I was in Gila Bend and it was the first time I ever raced my YZF. Todd Davis who was the state champ walked by me on his KX500 like I was standing still.

My YZF with the WR tranny geared 15-43 will barely do 100mph. I have clocked it on a flat graded dirt road with a tail wind. I race against guys on KX500's a lot and I will never settle for anything less than I need.

I know when you are talking about going 90mph or a 100mph seems pretty crazy but with the competition I (I mean WE) race against you need everything you can get.

You would regret a YZF450. I can pretty much guarantee that.

Hmmm, i jet my KX spot on, run the correct plug, and use Super M at 40:1 and that thing will d@mn near idle out a tank of gas.
If everything is correct on your YZ then I have no idea what to tell you. Something is not right though.

Check the reeds, and the power valves. I worked a bike like that once at Ben's and come to find out some one had put a top end in it and didn't put the power valves back in it correctly. They were all out of whack. That could really screw up performance depending on which way they are installed wrong.

It was an older CR250, and when I got it back together it was a screaming machine. The guy had owned it for a year and that was the first time it ever ran right for him. He was very pleased.

I did the same thing the first time I pulled the jug on my KX to degum the powervalves and de-carbon the head. I got the powervalves back in, but not in correct time. That 500 was lame duck! Got ahold of the shop manual real quick and got that straightened out. Ended up running better than it ever had. I found out that with the mass production only about 30% of them are correct, they are usually a couple degrees out
