please visit the national forest website. major changes have been proposed to the tonto national forest, and without public input, your favorite riding area may become a picnic area. THIS IS SERIOUS. The deadline for e-mail is february 15th. the website links are below. it says that they have not received much feedback, well of course, no one knows about it!!! make sure you read the entire pdf file, most of the extreme changes effect the cave creek/mesa ranger district. one in particular, the change of castle rock/needle rock/rio verde campground at the end of dynamite road. the CC/M ranger district wants to make it a picnic area, NO CAMPING. Please check out the page carefully as other areas of the tonto will be affected. Thank You

on the tonto home page you will find big blue letters. TONTO NATIONAL FOREST EXTENDS PUBLIC COMMENT PERIOD FOR RECREATION FACILITY ANALYSIS" under those words there are two links. go to the link "MORE INFO" On this page they breifly explain some of their changes, but not the big ones. towards the bottom of the page you will see another link that says, "READ THE TONTO'S RFA: Recreation Facility Analysis: 5-Year Proposed Program of Work (1.35 mb, pdf)" open that pdf file and then try to understand it. or you can skip to page 17 and begin there. page 17 begins the proposed changes. Notice words like decomission, Change Site Type, Reduce capacity, eliminate programs, reservable only, weekends only, decomission facilities, reduce season, closed in winter(Bermuda flat, my favorite winter fishing spot aarrrgghh) also take notice that most of the changes include adding fees, increasing fee compliance or adding volunteers. where's the the cool new stuff we get for paying cool new fees??? what about those places that are non-fee areas, will campers know when they get there??? or will they have to go all the way back home to get a "Tonto Pass"

Comments can be provided to the forest by mail at RFA (attention Dave Killebrew), Tonto National Forest, 2324 E. McDowell RD., Phoenix, AZ 85006, by fax (602) 225-5295 (ATTN: RFA) or by e-mail: dkillebrew@fs.fed.us. This extended public comment period ends February 15, 2008.
