View Full Version : Oceano (Pismo) Dunes???!!
I will be making a trip to Oceano Dunes in mid-march during my school's Spring Break week! I know nothing of this area! We would like to camp where we can ride from the trailer, etc... Would like to not have to drive trailer on to soft sand.. Any suggestions on where to go? Campsite? Open camping? How is the riding there? How about the weather? Any info would be great!! :D

Pretty much can camp right on the high tide line and ride right out from your trailer to the riding area.
Your gonna have to pull the trailer through sand to get to the area where you can camp and just ride the bikes right out. Depends on how far off the water you camp as to whether or not you drive in "soft" sand. It is pretty much open camping.
It will be a little cool in March but not cold by any means.
here is a website you all may want to check out.

Hey DS650fox,
I was born and raised in near-by San Luis Obispo. I have been to the dunes to play in the sand and fish and such, but I did not get into riding until I moved to Az. I can tell you that there are a few camp grounds (with paved roads in and out) that are right on the beach. I can't tell you any names because we always went home after we played. I can tell you that Pismo Beach is one of the town on the beach and the other one to check is Grover beach (same town - other side of the same sign). I know there is direct access to the beach from some of the camps but I don't know about all of them. As far as riding I don't know about what all the rules are but I think the water line has a speed limit (at least in some areas). The law on the beach can be a bit sticky so watch that. The dunes are not very wide but thay stretch for miles north and south. You can't ride north towards the pier but you can go south for miles.
Hope you have a great time

Most of the dunes are closed dune to treehugging lobbying now.
The speed limit along the waterline is 5-10 mph. The beach/dunes are open to riding in designated areas south of the creek/river. Was there last july for 5 days. Was a good time but the sand was really torn up with lots of ruts and whoops. Pick a spot near a bathroom and save the blackwater tank space.
The "law" there is much more laid back than at the dunes. You got to be doing something stupid for them to notice you.
IE riding without a helmet, No flag, Riding double. The usual.
Have fun and post some pics when you get back!
Getting ready for our trip.. Hopefully we will be able to cross the stream... :)

TIP O' THE DAY: JUST RIDE!!
It should not be too bad, just remember to go across closer to the ocean where it widens to avoid the ridges on either side if you can.
