View Full Version : Hot Wells Dunes
I have never heard of hot wells dunes until I visited the Forest service website. It had hot wells dunes listed and I searched for info and pictures but couldn't find a whole lot of info! I am wondering if it is worth the drive and if so should I put my paddle and my bike? I am asking about the paddle because the pictures that I found looked like there is desert terrain involved and if so I don't want to trash a new paddle.[8D]

Disco1,
Don't bother with the paddle. It is a cool place, the hot tubs are awsome! There are a lot of trails in and about the "dunes". They are not like the big dunes in Cali but are fun with some good hills and a lot of trails. It took us about 8 hrs pulling a hauler from Prescott.
It is paved all the way if you go in from Safford and most of the way from Bowie. Could be chilly at night but days were nice. Have a good time and be safe.

Disco1 I live in Safford and the Hot Well Dunes Are a 2000 acre area open for all types of off road use. The locals around here all run paddles on there quads, but you do stand a chance of ruining them. There are miles of old ranching roads open for riding out side the dunes. You will be about 3 hrs. to Safford from Gilbert the dunes are another 25 mi. Nights last week mid 20s ice most mornings, days high 50s. Can be very busy on holiday weekends.

We went to Hot Wells this past Sunday.
It took us about 2 and a half hours from Tucson to get there. Some of us used paddle tires, some did not. I don't think they are of much advantage at Hot Wells because there are several types of terrain at the site. It was Super Bowl Sunday and the crowds were not too big. The BLM has a Site Host on duty there so the trash, litter, and bottles are not too bad! The actual size of the dunes at the area are only 5% or less than the size of the AZ/CA dunes near Yuma. But the crowds are less too! If you want to see another part of the state, it's a fun trip. But, if you want to really "run the dunes" then the western dunes are the way to go.
Thanks for all of the info and especially the picutres.:D
