View Full Version : Accidents Galore!!!
:([xx(][V][:0] Man there are a lot of crazy people at the Dunes. I saw five accidents this past weekend and some serious injuries too. Not all of them were alcohol related too. One guy was racing at nite and went straight down a witches eye. He had a large gash between his eyes and was dazed. One guys a-arm came apart while doing about 70mph. He broke his arm and has serious back injuries. One guy was drag racing on Saturday night and at the end of the drags a Jeep decides to cross in front of him and he hit the Jeep and went flying and was down for about 20 min. Don't know the extent of his injuries. Another guy almost ran into someones tent while draging a friend and while trying to avoid it he lost control and flipped his nice Banshee and broke several pieces on it. He was ok though. I can go on and on but I'm sure you have your own stories to tell, so please go right ahead and tell us all what you saw.:D

Gordans Well This past Friday through Sunday. Crazy stuff out there too, especially at the drags! Too many close calls between people stalling there Bikes, Quads, and Rails. Too many people draging at the same time, to many folks using their regular trucks, jeeps, and suv's. I'm suprised nobody got killed, but thankful too![:I]

This is precisely why I stay away from the dunes...especially on holiday weekends.

This past weekend at the dunes we had our share of wrecks. The worse was one woman with a broken wrist and one man tore all of the tendons in his shoulder.:(

Yeah, this was my first trip to Gordons Well this year and there were allot of accidents this weekend:(. I hit two witches eyes myself,[:0] good thing they were only about two to three feet deep and I wasn't going very fast[8)]. Be careful out there. the sand shifts allot.
This post has too much of "blood thirsty" sound to it. I've never been to the dunes, and it doesn't sound like I'll ever want to.

On extended weekend holiday trips out at the Dunes there are some, not many, who like to party a little to much and get behind the wheel of a ATV and there you have it. There are some legitimate accidents that do happen and some that shouldn't. Before you say you wouldn't go, try going on a weekend that is not a holiday weekend and the number of folks out there deminishes greatly, therefore less accidents and less crouded riding.

Yes for the no of people showing up on a holiday weekend the injury's realy are few. When you think most poker runs garnish two to there injuries or as low as one. Imagine if that poker run had 42'000 people ill bet you have 20-100 injuries or so for the no of people the injuries are few its just disturbs most of us to see them. And what we all do and in every form has injuries. I too am scared by the amount of rails running the drags this season but thats there right so ill keep my racing on off weekends.and yes i seen a few of those accidents at the drags sat night at gordons.well Quad boy did you get the chance to run my black 440 sat night??????

AZSAND,,
As I was reading this thread my thinking is exactly as yours is.
Being involved in these type accidents is mostly caused by the those involved. Spoken by a guy who two years ago was involved in a accident caused by myself;).
Less than one tenth of one percent of the attendees are involved in accidents. The very vast majority have a wonderful experiance at the dunes and keep coming back for more.:D

We saw the cycle that flipped just after the jump at the Gordon's Well drags on Saturday night. I thought he was going to get smashed by a rail for certain, lucky for him everyone rushed out for the block. I think he was out cold for about 4 minutes. We woke up on Sunday morning to see an ambulance entering the camp next to us, an elderly woman tripped on the stairs coming out of her rv and broke her hip. The ambulance driver said it was the only non-dune related injury trip to Ogilby he had ever heard of. Those Winnebago quads are dangerous!;)

AZKCfan, Like everyone has said, go on an offweekend, and you'll love it. I've watched the drags at Gordon's well, and Glamis for quite awhile now. Both are growing more dangerous every year. We went awhile back and saw a rail running at least 65 mph, run right over the top of a guy on a banshee. He got taken out by ambulance. It was both of their faults, and the chance you take by joing in something like that. Another guy flipped his cycle while riding a wheelie. He was fine, but his bike wouldn't start up. He was about 75 yards down from the starting area, and smack dab in the middle of the drags. Everyone kept racing around this guy while he tried to get his bike started. There were several of the big buck rails that were racing each other b*lls out and coming within a foot or two of this guy. He couldn't push his bike out of the way because of all the people coming at him. It was ridiculous. I myself have had enough of the drags, it's just too reckless now days. I don't want my daughter to see anyone get killed, etc. It's just not worth it.

Hey Sand People,
I am a first time writer, but I have enjoyed reading the stories and adventures of fellow riders. I was asked to go on a dune trip the weekend after Thanksgiving. The place only had about 500 people around and it seemed like only about 100 of them had bikes. The dunes were wide open and I had a blast up until my clutch blew up on my 98 CR250. I got an invite to go back the weekend of President's day. I was excited to be going back and got my bike fixed up and even got a better paddle tire for my bike. After our first trip my wife got bitten by the sand bug and we had a new Quad soon after our return from the last trip. We were "READY !!!" As we pulled into Gordons Well my jaw dropped as I looked over the endless mass of campers through the cloud of dust that was hanging in the air. After we unloaded and set up camp with group, it was time to go out for a ride. My stomach was filled with butterflies as we headed out towards the zip and dash crowd of bikes up on the sand highway. I was having trouble riding because I was looking for oncoming and cross traffic. Our first stop was Patton Hill, "OH MY GOD" It was cool to stop and watch but I wasn't about to try the hill with all the people running up and down. I almost had three wrecks on the way to the hill, I was not going to have one on the hill. Later we headed out into the dunes and that was not quite as bad and people seemed to run in tight groups and it wasn't to bad to keep an eye out for others, but hitting the tops of the dunes was a real nail biter for me (Rooky). I saw some tumbles and plenty of near misses (had a few of those myself) but I did not see anyone get hurt. The drags would be much better if there was more of an etiquette and less chaos. I must say I did not have as much fun riding due to the potential for bodily harm. I felt like I was always riding and looking for the out to avoid the wreck.
Still had a good time and hanging out by the camp fire with good people is always fun. I hope to get better at dune riding and maybe that will help with the crowds, but for now I will try to stick with of weekends at the dunes.

The major holiday weekends definitely keep you on your toes with the amount of riders in the dunes. Our group has been to the dunes on all of the holidays to date this season. The lead rider always has his job cut out for him in making sure you don't run into another group. If you think Gordon's Well was crowded on Presidents Day you should have seen it on Thanksgiving. :D

My first trip to the dunes was Saturday of this past Presidents Day weekend. We went to Glamis and enjoyed watching the crazy people racing up Oldsmobile Hill. As crowded as it was that weekend, I was amazed at how easy it was to get away from the crowds by just riding away from the the main hills. I also couldn't believe I didn't see more accidents with all the weaving and criss-crossing happening on Olds hill. Only saw someone fall out of the back of a jeep (i think) and someone fall off his Banshee while racing up the hill.
I did, however, see a couple idiots riding dirtbikes without flags in the dunes around Olds hill. Seeing these guys made me realize just how important those flags are. You couldn't see the bikes until they were pratically on top of us.

FAST1,
We were the toy hauler parked about 100 yards East of you. I actually took a picture of
your car with the YFZ on the trailer to show a friend of mine, impressive set-up! That
was the first trip for my buddy's YFZ, and my son's first trip on his Blaster. They both
had an awesome time. We all worried for the elderly woman, I hope her hip is healing well.
