Hello all! I am happy to see the arrival of this forum, and hope to see some good activity in it as well. Anyway, I thought the first thread would be great for introductions... I'll kick it off:
My name is Paul, but most people I know call me Pauly. I have been serious about DS for a few years now (for reasons listed in my profile). It is typical for my rides to go anywhere between 60 to 150 miles, and the longest stretch I've ever done was a ride out to San Diego for a week (I didn't think my bum was ever going to recover from that one!). I would like to do the TAT someday, and do a ride up the west coast as well... For now though I will focus on doing some adventures in this great state of ours, and I look forward to riding with others I meet from this site!

Welcome to the new forum drtrider145! Don't hesitate to post up reports of your adventures, or whatever else comes to you DS-wise. By the way, congrats on the new ride! Those headlights are something else... You should throw a couple pics in the sub-forum.
Alright! This is the best forum category, by far (no, I'm not biased at all).
I'm Dave, and currently own two dual sport, big red pigs (600R and 650R). You might say that they own me.
Thanks RA for adding Dual-Sport Discussions!
Don't forget to add a thread subscription, below.

Hi ya Dave! You got to take a picture of that XR-R and throw it in the sub forum. And we want (at least I do) details of this water cooled mistress!
Glad to see the DS guys now have a home on RA. Look forward to reading about the adventures.

I've got a 250 enduro that is street legal that I use to DS on.
But I really only plated it to ride on any road and not be stuck just on trails.
So I guess you could call me a 90dirt-10street% DS rider

Hey there. My name is Julio and I just arrived here from NYC. I posted my story at the intro section and am eagerly looking forward to riding with you all.
Right now my schedule is wide open and I plan on riding EVERY weekend so if you're heading out please let me know.
I ride a DR650 and although I'm fairly new to dirt I can throw the big bike around pretty good.
Let me know if anyone is going out this weekend.

I have an XR650 that I ride about 95% on the street right know. I use it as a daily commuter. Hey, 50 miles to the gal. compared to the 15 I get with the SUV. I 've got almost 4000 miles on my bike and not one problem.

Hiya RidenRed333! I think we discussed the ins and outs of uncorking your BRP before... so any developments in that respect? If you are doing that much riding on the slab, then you should check out the 'Removable Windshield' thread and get inspired! I hope to see you more in this forum... have a blast!

I haven't done anything to it yet. Its still corked, I spend the money on buy my daughter a new quad. So I am going to have to wait. The next thing I want to buy is a complete wheel, maybe off ebay. So I can put a better street tire on one wheel and leave my m6006 on the other. I got about 1200 miles on the m6006 and its about half worn. So I would like to put a better street worthy tire on. Its easier to swap out wheels then tires.

RidenRed... I would like to get a set of SM wheels for my bike (but they are really expenseve... even for used). I'm sure you could find a good deal on a rear wheel for your bike.

Riden-
Would you happen to work for Chase in downtown? I see a red XR650 parked there every day with knobs half way worn.
I have a red VFR as my daily commuter.
Having the 2 sets of rims for the DR650 is great. I have 606's on one set and Baracudas on the other. I rode the bike from NY over 3,600 miles on the Baracudas and they hardly show any wear. And let me tell you, in the twisties, they STICK! As close to a supermoto setup as you can get.

I don't have an odo on the bike, yet, but it sees mostly local dualsport stuff. It gets a healthy dose of singletrack as well. I think that long road trips on the bike would be punishing.

I put the front Kenda on and rode to work/back for about 2 months, 60 miles a day, and the rear hasn't been used yet. was burning up an old trailwing that was laying around and some other tires. so good mileage for the money if you want street, or gravel/fire roads. didn't like the sand when I did a trip to havasu/prescott by dirt roads in april though.
o.k. kids.i have to put a stop to this potential XR forum.i run a KLR.if you folks are up for it there is a farewell ride to a fellow rider who is moving.this is a 3 day D/S ride that will be greuling.you can ride it all or just on the days that fit your schedule.9/12-9/14 it is titled "THE BLESSED HELLRIDE" if you are seriously interested than send me a P.M. and i will point you in the right direction for info.it is listed on a couple of other sites and i don't want to take away from this one.each leg is 100+ miles and 90+ is dirt.we picked some extreme terrain and make no promises to anyones success in compleating the trip nor is it a organized event.basically you are on your own so buddy up and the plan is to stay in cheap hotels(save weight and not worry about wet camp gear)

Is that your official RA DS introduction??? I'm sure you can do better than that! I think anyone who enjoys DS enjoys riding in dirt. You should re-read glnn3's post... he mentioned something about "The Blessed Hellride" with over 90 miles of dirt involved. It sounds just like your kind of ride dood!! I hope you can make it.

Just to let you know I still have the oem tire on my XR and have 3700 miles on it and it still has 3/4 of the tread left but I am on my second rear. The oem rear had about a 1/4 left when I replaced it and it had about 2400 miles on the bike. Then I replaced it with the m6006 and it has about 1300 miles or so and it at about 1/2 worn. Just to clear things up. I have a question for you all, when riding on street and not dirt which for me is late May thru Oct. how often do you change your oil and what kind do you run in your bike. I run Maxium 10w40 and change about 1500 miles when it starts to turn black. On dirt I change about ever four or five ride about 10 to 11 hours.

My name is Mark, and I currently ride a 2001 BMW Dakar....at least until I can sell her (not currently on the market, but should be soon). I am so bummed out that my 54 year old body has decided to give up the ghost so soon. Lets see, where do I begin....my hips, shoulders and wrists are the most noticeable, they get sore (from arthritis) even after a short side so I must painfully part with the bike. :-( (excuse the pun)
I love the bike and have enjoyed riding since I bought her, but things just are not working out as I'd hoped. One of the reasons I bought it was to haul camera gear out to remote locations and to save a few bucks on gas for local commutes, but since buying a Nikon D300 I'm in panic mode about putting it on my back and riding. If the pain wasn't so bad I'd buy motosport panniers for the camera gear, but they won't help with the arthritis.
My other hobby is also yearning for a new ride, auto-xing in a 20 year old 4 door sedan isn't really conducive to being competitive. So, with the sale of the bike and my 84 BMW M635 I hope to buy a decent 4x4 or AWD vehicle for the photo trips and a smaller BMW 3 series for monthly auto-xing, then semi-retire the auto-x appliance (87 BMW 535is).
Too Bad....and Sooo Sad,
Here she is on the rim from a couple weeks ago:

Dave ya, its pretty quit but it will still cause my car alarm to go off if I rev it up and take off from the garage.
Some day when I get the cash I will change the exhaust, but for now it just has a twin air filter and the rest is completely stock. She runs great I put about 40 miles a day on her with out a problem.

09/21/08, 7:47 PM
RidenRed... if you take the baffle out of the muffler and do a little 'mod' to the carburetor, you will think you have a totally different bike (you already have a better air filter)!! Your MPG may suffer slightly, but the fun-factor will have you laughing out loud in your helmet! It does not take much to turn that machine from plain jane, to something that you will think is naughty.... less than an hour. You know how to reach me brother.

How great is this, having a Dual Sport discussion thread on RA!! I'm an old time rider, having begun in the late '50s on a Buddy Stubbs prepared 1957 BSA 650 Spitfire Scrambler, and going on from there. Been up on two wheels, three wheels and four wheels during my lifetime (haven't tried more than four so far!).
After a lapse on my part for a number of years I'm back up on two wheels riding a tight little Yamaha XT225 dual sport, kind of a cult favorite in many quarters of the world, and now that I own one I know why!
Hanging out on www.XT225.com (http://www.XT225.com) I've learned a great deal about how to set these bikes up for whatever purpose someone might have in mind. But the things I've read there advise against using a tire sealant like Slime to keep punctures at bay. Anyone here have a different take on this issue?
There's a product that fills the tire cavity with inflated balls, kinda like tennis balls but a lot more high tech. If one deflates the others continue to hold air and you go on without any problem. However it's mega big bucks to purchase and install these kits, so I'm looking for a more cost effective way of puncture proofing a dual sport tire. ..Any suggestions would be appreciated!
RidenRed333

I have never had a problem with punctures, ever. Do you think the tires you are running are to thin. I mean the rubber my be thinner or something. Maybe go with something where the nobbies or closer together.

Az4x4Taco, welcome aboard the DS forum!
I think slime can clump in the tube over time, thus causing a nasty wheel imbalance... I don't use it. Instead I stick with heavy duty tubes and tires that have a thicker/stiffer carcass. Now if you are not using your bike for fast riding, then I really don't see a problem with using slime. I don't know much about the tubeless kits, but somebody here may be able to chime in about them.

I like Slime especially when riding where there are an abundance of thorns. Slime will not help with pinch flats, the only protection is to run higher pressures and tires with stiffer sidewalls. I have never had Slime cause a balance problem on any of my bikes. I don't believe tire balls are recommended in applications where there may be sustained high speed runs as there is an issue with friction and heat build up.

He's right the tireballs do not like the higher heat that even running 50mph on the road for extended times causes. although the front would probably be fine, the rear they break down from the heat buildup.
I just run more air pressure on dualsport runs, and only once did I pick up a thorn to get a flat. and I patched it on the side of the trail. but that was a standard tube, heavy duty tube would probably have been fine.
I hate Slime as when you get a pinch flat, the tire fills up with the stuff and makes a mess.
Fly SuperIV tubes work well. VERY heavy duty.
I have a legal XRR also & enjoy day rides.

As far as the KLR vs XR vs DR. They are all bullet proof. The KLR goes more towards roads, black top and dirt. DR is less street and more dirt. The XR is by far the more aggressive dirt oriented bike. I have had a DR and now an XR. I have not had much time on the XR and many many miles on the DR.
I would first look at the type of riding you want to do. The KLR is the only liquid cool model of the 3.

here in yuma it will be mostly to and from work, sand roads, typical dirt roads & such, maybe possible longer rides on the street. but when i go to my brothers house in big pine, ca it will be more single track and mountains. i was looking at the drz400 or 650 but found out today the kawi/suzuki dealership stoped selling suzukis. if only yamaha sold a bigger bike... :(
a big turn off for the kawasaki is that ridiculous faring with a headlight that doesnt move and the 8.3" of ground clearance. but i like that you can put the bags on it.

For the type of riding you are doing, I would suggest the Suzuki DR650, the DR400 is really a dirt bike that is street legal. 95% dirt.
There are companies that make bags for the DR or you can get some generic bags. I have some cheap camo looking things I use. They have held up ok.

that was the one i was considering but i need to know if i can use saddle bags without melting them.

The ones i used did not melt. The exhaust is under the side cover, so it should protect them.
Keep in mind, when looking for a bike, buy what fits, not what accessories you can get. You can always make something work for you.

true. im 6'1" so pretty much anything will fit. now on this dr650, what is the max output amperes on the stator? i plan on adding a couple of small HIDs to the mix. also what are some things that this bike is lagging?

a wealth of information for the DR's
West side rider here. I have a KTM XC-W 530 decked out for DS rides. My brother and I did a huge loop through Death valley, cerro Gordo, barker ranch and Saline valley last spring. It was my first overnighters on 2 wheels. Great time. Looking for more whenever possible. I have Tuesdays and wednesdays off, so if anyone wants to ride PM me I'm game.
