I think the only thing better than buying a new (or new to you) Dual Sport is making it your own with some farkles and/or mods.

So far, my Husky has received a charcoal canisterectomy, a brighter headlight by using an adapter made out of a PVC coupler and a 55/65 watt silverstar 9007 bulb, a L.V. X3 slip on exhaust, and made a few alterations to the decals.

For the farkles I have some Cycra barkbusters, Dual Star mirrors (that I ended up putting 3" blind spot mirrors on), and some IMS pro series footpegs (that may be considered a mod because they were made for a KX100). I'm pretty sure there will be some other goodies going on the Husky in the future.

So let's see what cool stuff you have done and added to your DS...

How do you like your Dual Star mirrors? They look sharp!

I need mirrors in a BIG way....

TIA

Dave-

My first impression of the mirrors was not the best... I put them on and went out for a 130 mile ride, and felt really disconnected with what was going on behind me. I ended up putting the stock mirrors back on, and put some blind spot mirrors on the Dual Stars. I like this setup because it allows me to watch my 6, and it also allows me to make a lane change without throwing my head around.

Ah... Ok. I had your stock mirrors confused for the Dual Stars.

I need to find some larger ones, like your stock mirrors. I feel like an industrial accident waiting to happen with the smaller mirrors, while riding the slab.

Does your bike have a brake/clutch perch with a place to screw on some mirrors? If so, you just need to find out if it's 8 or 10mm, and go find some mirrors you like at your local motorcycle shop.

No such luck on the perches.

I'll check out Sparks or one of our other fine shops. There's one I won't be dealing with, though. :)

Thanks!

Some might be wondering what a "Farkle" is.

This about sums it up: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motorcycle_farkle

Fancy
Accessory
Really
Kool
Likely
Expensive

Very cool word.... It seems to be used as a noun, verb, adjective, etc., no problemo. Pronoun, personal pronoun, sure, you bet!

Not a practicing grammarian Dave

Thanks for clearing that one up!
I was pondering it for awhile.

Rewound the stator myself for better lighting, skidplate, passenger pegs (nice aluminum folder units), aluminum rear rack, IMS big pegs, UFO plastic guards on custom made handguards, Acerbis twin bulb headlight, IMS big tank, White Bros "silencer", Acerbis fork/rotor guards, cheapie folding mirror that works pretty well.

I also have a 41mm FCR carb I gotta put on and get jetted correctly.....someday.

Yep, those look pretty cool, and at $30 for each Billet clamp, it's Farkle, for sure.

Nice pig! She's looking clean for a '94.

Which passenger pegs do you recommend?

These are what I got. The bracket welds to the frame tubes and the pegs come off by undoing two bolts. Clean and handy.

Naw, they are only $15.95 each, $32.00 a set:grin:, plus see if you can order them through a local dealer as Baja Designs is pretty proud of their shipping.

Thanks for the tip! Those look like just the ticket.

F_G: Too late.... I ordered them from BD. I see what you mean about shipping - $12.00 for a pair of clamps and a BD folding mirror. That's ok. I have a temporary moratorium on our local shops.

Hey, the Baja Design DS mirror actually works. I can SEE without the world behind me looking like a Claude Monet painting.

I'll order a few more, now that I know they are not junk. :)

The 10mm billet perches fit like a glove. Nice!

It's the simple things that make me smile.

Here's a couple of shots of the new glass and billet perch on my XR600.

The mirror is easy to fold and has plenty of set nuts to keep things tight.

This isn't really a farkle... but I just ordered a couple of dust masks from Wolfsnout. I can't wait to try it out!

Remember, "Its not a dust mask, Its an air filter for the rider."

It looks like a dust mask to me, though. :)

That's the one I have - good vision area, nice construction, folds down out of the way well.

This morning I performed a little surgery to the Husky seat. My butt is getting really tired of the rough treatment, so hopefully this mod will help out.

First, I took the seat apart and marked the foam where I wanted to remove material.

http://www.ridingarizona.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=485&stc=1&d=1221856391

Then I fabbed up a 1/2" hole saw out of a copper coupling.

http://www.ridingarizona.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=486&stc=1&d=1221856391

It did a great job of removing the foam from the bottom of the seat without tearing the foam all apart (no drill either... just turned it by hand). The holes go in anywhere between 3/8" to 7/8" depending on the thickness of material.

http://www.ridingarizona.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=487&stc=1&d=1221856391

Anyone want to buy some custom made earplugs??

http://www.ridingarizona.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=488&stc=1&d=1221856391

I actually got the cover back on the seat pretty easy, but the staple gun I was using just didn't have enough power to do the job right. After a few calls, I found a shop named 'Performance Upholstery' that was happy to help me out. They didn't even charge me to staple the cover on! They will surely get my business in the future.

I can tell that the seat has a little more give to it, but until I go out and really test the seat on a good ride will I know if this mod was worth the effort (which wasn't much). I'll let you all know how it goes...

hmmm...curious why you'd take material from the bottom?

I shaved my seat down but more for height than comfort. It did make the seat a bit more comfortable though since it widened the area of butt contact. Take a look at the pics here:

I'm not trying to make the seat lower... I'm trying to make it more comfortable (the idea is to have less material to support the weight, so it actually gives in a bit)!:drunk::wonder::rofl:

OK people, after 130 mile ride today I can honestly say the mod did improve the seat. Not enough to keep me from going aftermarket though. I think the upholstery shop I went to can do something for less than half of what I'd expect to pay for a Renazco or a Corbin seat.

Dave P

LD:

Nice try! That's an "A" for effort, for sure.

At the price of those aftermarket seats, I'd almost consider dropping a few extra bucks and having Recaro custom make one. :)

I wonder if scooping out a layer of foam and replacing it with a gel pack would work?

Let us know how the upholstery shop fix works out. If it works, you might make those guys a small fortune, considering the multitude of sore asses out there. :)

IMO, if you're going to go aftermarket you need something that will provide you a wides base. Weight distribution is more important than how hard the seat is. My buddy has a renazcon on his DR and I have a Corbin and I like the corbin 10 times more. So if the upholstry place can mimic that then you're golden.

BTW, I bought an air staple gun for that mod so anyone that's got a compressor is more than welcome to borrow it.
