View Full Version : where to camp
Hello all, I was wondering if it would be better to go to Oligby or Gecko road for camping in ISD. I will be taking a fifth wheel and want to know what area is less windy yet is close to the popular dunes. Also, is the benefit of being close to the big hills worth the trade off for less favorable camping conditions. thanks for the help.

I prefer Ogilby over Gecko Road anyday, less people and chaos. The area around the Ogilby tower is pretty cramped so we always camp just west of Olgiby road and north of the interstate. There is lots of camping room. The only downfall is that you are a little ways from the dunes but it doesn't take long to cover the distance on a quad.

Thanks for the reply, any info is good info. when I look on the map, it only has a dot that reads Ogilby. Is that the road that turns into S34 or a town? I am meeting someone from cali so if someone has GPS coordinants that would be great.
Exit north off I-8, Ogilby Road (S34). North to Railroad Tracks, left just before railroad tracks, and follow wooden power lines all the way to Radio Tower.. Camp just northwest of tower for easy quick access to Patton valley and the dunes... :)
Camp approx. at:
32° 48' 40"N, 114° 53' 38"W (WGS84/NAD83) just beyond tower...
Good map...

Some days the wind can be strong.. But not bad at all.. Usually comes from the west / northwest direction... Kind of a flat area with little trees and shrubs.

That is extremely helpful. Thanks again!
To be the devil's advocate for a moment: Ogilby is a bit more "sane" than Glamis as a rule. however, camping on Gecko Rd. (we like Pad 2 or Roadrunner) will put you much closer to the better known dune hills (i.e. Competition hill, Olds hill, China Wall and Brawley Slide) The sand drags that go off on the weekends at Glamis are kind of hectic, and often rated PG-13 or R, but are a blast if you can overlook some of the behavior. In terms of wind...typically the wind prevails from the west, so regardless of where you camp, try to orient your rig to help block it out. many people bring sheets of plywood and use them as wind breaks between the tires of the trailer. Just my .02. :)
