Hey guys i'm kinda new to Tucson and would like to get a group of Tucson riders together and do a ride day at redington pass, mabye up to chimney rock and back or just do some general exploring since i'm new to the area. I usually ride a YZ250 but since the tranny went out in the desert i'm riding my 02 Polaris Trailboss. Anyway, before i make an official event thread i was wondering what i need to be legal to ride in that area and possibly what i need to get street legal so i can go on all the awesome rides i am always hearing about. Thanks
You only need to be street legal in reddington if you plan on riding on the main road. On any given weekend you will see a lot of atvs that aren't legal riding up and down the road but I wouldn't suggest it unless you are legal because the last 2-3 times I've been out there I have come across rangers who will check to see, especially on the weekends. To be legal you'll need a horn mirror, light on your plate, mc plate with registration and insurance.
If you are set on going to reddington try to go on a day other than the weekend. Weekdays its fairly quite but on the weekends all the squids show up in addiiton to all the shooters. The further back on redington road you go the less people you will see. Most people tend to stay within the first 10 or so miles. Regardless you should be able to find some riders here who would be able to meet up with you.

I might go out there this weekend, but I'm either riding my rm250 or YZ450. The north side of reddington pass is national park which you will need nothing to camp or ride (according to the park ranger). The south side of the road is State Trust Land (correct me if I'm wrong). Some of my friends have been approached by the Sherriff and told that they needed the state trust land permit which is now $50 per person. So far, no one I know has been ticketed. I don't have one and I take my chances. If you want to ride on the reddington pass road, then you will definately need to be street legal.

I may be up for sunday... I'll check with some other friends, and see if they can make it too.

I just found out it's going to be $80 per year to insure my quad, and i found out what i need to get street legal. I doubt i will have it ready by this weekend, but definetly next weekend i'm going to go up to redington pass. I want to get away from the crowds and explore some backcountry. I live and work on the AF base so maybe i can ride it to work once in a while since it only two miles. I will post the ride again after i have everything i need. Is there any other suggestions of fun places to go near tucson, i don't like to drive too far for a day ride.
Post up whenever you want to get out, I went up to chimney rock a few weeks ago. There's also a cool spot up in Marana but not trail riding area, mainly just for horsin around.

If you still want to ride sunday, you can haul the quad up to one of several unloading area's, without actually riding on the road.
Where do you live? I'm off of Escalante, and Kolb?

Marana? Do tell. I love to go places close to home :):)
I'm getting my quad back this weekend from my buddy so I hope to get out in the next couple weekends.:grin:
I have always been curious about where you can and can't ride without being street legal up there. Is it as long as your not on the main road? Would the chimney rock trail be ok? Niether of my rides are street legal but if we can ride somewhere up there let me know and I will be there. :out:

You don't have to be street legal on the trails, just the main road.
As far as Marana, he's probably referring to Pinal.

Either that or Tangerine which isn't that much better. :(

As much as i want to get out this weekend i think i'm going to wait until next weekend so i'm completely street legal. I don't want any f.s hippies telling me where i can and can't ride, especially since the rules are so vague on specific areas. Freakneh i live on the AF base, that's why i like redington, beacuse it's fairly close.

Yes behind Pinal airpark, I believe the exit is 232 (marana air park road) go about a 1\4 mile west. I'm not sure about the legal part from what the sign says but there are alot of riders there all the time, people camping out there etc. I've been there 3 times without any police or anyone showing up. It is supposed to be state land. There's also supposed to be other trails up by Picacho Peak but I have yet to get to those.

It is a rather large area NW of town right of 10. You should have a STL permit to ride there. If you go on the weekends it can be very busy and mostly squids. If you want to go out there send me a PM since I live close by. :out:

On the North side of 10 across from the peak is Mt. Newman and there is a binch of riding out there. I think it is BLM or national forest land. I know it is legal to ride I just don't remember the ownership. I've been out there a few times and there are a ton of trails and fun riding. :)

You must be street legal on any paved roads, state, county or other wise. You must also be street legal on the Nat'l Forest on all horizontal road marker trails. The vertical ones are a freebie! I've been wanting to do Reddington Pass as well. I'll be looking for the post.

This sounds like an interesting place worth exploring. When you posting this ride again? :out: I'll be there if you do.
