I am checking to see if any of those who know the trail from rail x to Picacho and are looking to go anytime soon!
Stoner,
there use to be a solid trail that took you from rail x out to picacho but I tried it about a year ago and came across a fence that has about 3 locks on it on the back side of the tortolitas. If the fence wasn't there it would be a sure shot through to picacho. I've come in from the other side as well (the tangerine side) but can't find another way (besides the trail with the fence). Maybe somone else knows of some trail but I've looked around alot back there and come up with nothing. I think the fence is recent because I've talked with a couple guys from this site that have done the trail in jeeps many times but you can't any longer due to the fence. On another note, let me know when your up for the tucson wash ride again - I'll let you lead this time so you don't have to put up with the dust:tmi:

Shawn, we did that ride about a year ago. It was just Mike and me on our bikes. It took us about 3 hours to get to Picacho from Rail X. Mike used his GPS and it only took us a little over an hour to get back. Good thing because his bike doesn't have lights. We did a lot of just plain old bashing across the desert to get there. Coming back we had to ride on some pavement. I was street legal at the time. Mike might be able to help you out with the route. I would love to ride with you but I hurt my back at work and have to take it easy. We should plan on something soon.

I'll set up a ride out there sometime real soon, maybe next weekend in fact - keep your eyes on the rides section. I know you say you don't mind the dust but you may change your mind after doing this ride - last time we did it the dust was unbelieveable even with goggles. And stoner, I meant to say you can ride in front, not lead, because your right, then we would be going in circles all day lol - it can get confusing back there until you've done it a bunch.

Sounds like a plan, i'll keep an eye out for it in the rides forum.
Stoner, nic and I didn't intend on going to picacho today but as we got out there exploring trails we found ourselves getting closer and closer to red red rock and finally said "screw it, lets find the way to picacho that everybody talks about". We finally pushed through and found a way. I've got it on my gps so we can go whenever now. From rail x its going to be about 100 miles round trip. There is about 3 miles of pavement parralling I-10 just before the dairy queen but ahrdly any traffic. You can fill up at the dairy queen at picacho but I could also carry extra fuel for you if your 450 needs it. You can keep a pretty fast pace on this ride too which I know you'de like

Oh sure I see how you guys are!
Let me know when you want to go again! I may need to carry a 2 gal gas can for that ride....not sure how far I can go on a full tank but I may get 45mpg a tank.
I want to get an IMS tank(3.7) gals but I cant get myself to spend the money yet....
Instead of geting the bigger tank why don't you just get a six-pack rac? Lots of sport quads have them. I put one on my raptor and can carry a 2 gallon gas can no problem for the longer rides or when out just cruising and don't need the extra gas I can carry a cooler. Definitely worth it. If you don't have one by the time we ride I'll carry fuel for ya.
