View Full Version : 2002 Baja 1000
I heard a rumor that a Honda sport utility quad won this years running of the Baja 1000. Can anyone confirm that?

Maybe in the Sportsman class. Only one of the four quads entered in that class finished. No way anyone on a utility quad would beat the likes of Jimmy Stephensen or Greg Rowe..although I'm not sure what the first pro across the finish line (Ruben Martin) was riding. Results are posted at offroad.com.

It is true-first quad over the finish line was the number 5a Honda Rincon quad with Rueben Martin riding. Their time was 23 hours 20 min. 36 sec.
WOW! I stand corrected..[:I]

That quad had to be tricked out majorly unless everyone else had trouble. i just can't see it running at race speeds!

Just got a press release from Honda. The Honda Rincon placed 1st and 3rd overall. The team of John Gregory, Doug Eichner, Alberto "Q"
Marquez and Marc Speath, was also on the Rincon taking third. They were actually LEADING the race until a low speed crash in a silt bed broke a front wheel spindle. Rather than waiting for his chase crew to reach him, Eichner decided to crawl to the finish line on 3 wheels.
Here's what John Gregory (who's usually on a high dollar race machine) had to say about the ride- ""We [the Rincon teams] were 1-2 going into the last hundred miles, Gregory reported. "Third place was probably an hour and a half back [at the time].
Gregory also spoke highly of the Rincon's ability to soak up the rough
stuff over the 1017-mile course from Ensenada to La Paz.
"It didn't tire you out. It was so deceivingly fast; you think you're
cruising along, but you're moving, you're passing people, and it doesn't tire you out. It just worked really good."
Side note- Dirtwheels really dogged the Rincon in there recent 4x4 shootout. Maybe they should have put it up against the DS650. Geez! Makes me consider trading my 250R in on one.

That blows my mind, I have raced with some of these fast guys and Honda must have paid them to ride that. I just can't see them trading their works quads in and riding one of those.
