yea, so what kind of racing is it you want to do? desert or motocross? If you want to do desert, you might try whiplash racing, they run a whole series of races, on a month pretty much. I'm starting at the lake pleasant race in february, but if you want to do motocross, I'm not too sure what your options are.

Look up WWW.WHIPLASHOFFROADRACING.COM
This is the only Desert series in Arizona right now. IT shows what all the class divisions are on race schedules. The 900 class is for first time racers. They will look at your finish times and then fit you into a class of your ability. This weekend is the season final race. Next years 1st race race will be down on the beach in Rocky Point Mexico. Look up that site and you'll see whats going on. Phil # 777;)

yz400rider, these races don't take place on a track like you're probably thinking of, these "tracks" are courses that are laid out for 25 - 30 miles and you do a multiple laps. The races are generally between 100 - 125 miles.

I know it isnt on a track but the whiplash website said you could practice desert racong there. So you need to re-fuel more than once a race probably. And do you need a pit crew or do most people not have a pit crew?

There's a Gran Prix at Speedworld on Dec 15th which is like a mini desert race with a little bit of everything on the course. They have a beginner class and it's close, both in location and time frame. But go out and run a little practice before the race date.

The Whiplash races are a local (relatively) circuit and they do an excellent job for the first time racers and other racers as well. A lot of the AMA National Hare and Hound races ( http://www.ama-cycle.org/index.asp ) are held in Lucerne Valley, CA area and are a challenge but you'll not soon forget the event.

The Arizona Trail Riders (http://atr.server101.com/) put on an epic enduro near Lake Pleasant in March and I would recommend getting out for a trail ride a few times in that area before running their race. The event this March is rumored to be a qualifier format and that's a little easier on first time racers and us old guys. [:p]

Basically, this is an area that has a huge amount of competition within an 8 hour drive radius, from enduros in New Mexico to hare and hounds in California to hare scrambles in Tecate (http://www.losancianos.com) to the Snowflake Whiplash race in Snowflake.

16 on a YZ400? Great! "Back in the day", I was 17 riding a YZ465 and weighing 100 lbs. Holeshots were not a problem, just the rest of the race. :D

Never met a CR500 I didn't like.

yz400rider,
Welcome to the wonderful world of desert racing. You have found a wonderful group of people to share it with.

Whiplash is awesome to the "first time racers" and racers in general. I will be making a last run at the state championship this year as an "Open Class" rider. Next year I will move to the 30+ class so I will be at all of the Whiplash races. Come find me in the pits (Yamaha #7), and I'll help you get started. I may have to miss the first round though in Jan. due to the hold up on the delivery of my new bike. I have been offered a loner bike, so we'll just have to see.

Canyon Offroad Park (COP) is a great place to practice. I have always believed that Motocross is perfect practice for desert racing. If can learn to go around a MX track effectively there is nothing you can't do in the desert. It's good conditioning, and it's safer than going out by yourself in the desert and practicing. Just don't try to good desert knowledge on MX alone. Mix it up a little. You will be suprised of the results.

Hope to see you at the races.
