We're (self, hubby, and two boys) of taking a day trip to Hayfield Draw.
Never been there and wanted to get some input before we go. How does
it compare to Rolls (where we usually go)?? Is it usually crowded?
Is it worth the drive from Chandler? Thanks for your input.

I have been up there twice before and had a great time. Just watch the weather up there it gets pretty darn cold.

My wife says "A fool and his quad will part" to me all the time.

About 5 miles west of Camp Verde. Fairly flat or mountain riding. Nice area for kids to ride also. You can catch the GWT near there (Cherry) or go over Mingus mtn. Also can head east and pass under the freeway (I-17). Good riding with connecting trails to other areas...

Hayfield Draw is a decent place to ride. In fact, Riding Arizona held one of our rides up there last season (The Verde Valley Experience)Here is one riders recap & photos:

This might be hard to believe but I and a small group of guys made the trails at hayfield draw. The best ride is to go over the hill (south) and hit Cherry wash and then go up to the end you will end up at Cherry springs. I worked for the forest service at the time and they were talking about shutting the area down. Because we were making these trails. I told them that we weren't hurting anything because it is a wash. After that they put up the current fences and eventually charged their three dollar parking fee. I just went up there on 1/4/03 and went over the mountain into Cherry. I went through Cherry and took the mountain rode that goes over to Mingus. Small amount of snow up there and the weather was great. Hayfield draw is Between Camp Verde (I-17 North Towards Flagstaff 90 Miles North of Phoenix) and Cottonwood. It is off to the west side of the road. When you see the long straight away on the road it will be off to your left. I was raised in Camp Verde. Another great ride is in the TP Rock area. to get there go out towards Payson from Camp Verde. After you travel on the Zane Gray Highway for about 6 miles or so you will cross clear Creek. Keep going another mile or so and you will start to climb a hill Off to the right is a road Called Fossil springs road. Turn there and go over the cattle guard. This is where it turns into a dirt road. If you kept going on this road you could go to Childs Power plant and to the Nudist Colony. Anyway, after about 3/4 mile or so you will see a dirt road off to your right. You will see some rocks that look like indian Tepees. If you continue ont this road it will end up at Verde River. Some big indian Ruins are at the River.

You can get to the hot springs from I-17 Dougas exit. There are always some hippies there. A friend of the family owns a ranch down there, forget the name but there is a house, pool, and apple orchard- lots of fun to hang out. The ride down the mountain to get to the river valley is challenging and the view is great, and the road will beat the @*%% out of your bike and you.

Hey - you guys have any maps of those trails?? We want to go up next weekend - where would be closer for a hotel - Cottonwood - Prescott Valley - or Camp Verde ?

Camp Verde as a few hotels right off of I-17 and the Camp Verde exit.

The best bet for a map I know of would be the Prescott National Forest map.
Pick one up at Popular Outdoor Outfitters or most any bookstore.
