What a great race! I arrived at the starting line in Sonotia at 3:00pm friday. I went through tech inpection, then left my bike with Jim Chapmen - 3rd in 40+ points. He babysat my bike while the wife & I headed down to are room at the Oasis down in Rocky point. Mike Parks, Alan Violette, myself, and a few other racers stayed in rooms across from each other. We had some beers & laughs B4 calling it a night around midnight. 5:00am was wake-up call, I had the duties of pounding on everyone's doors to get the drunks out of bed. 6:00am, we hit the road to drive back to the starting line in Sonotia 60 miles back up the highway. ( thank you Mike Parks for the ride ) We had riders meeting at 7:15am, Jay had reminded us that this was the Mike Winters Memorial race ( a qaud rider that was killed in this race in 1996) He pledded with us to be extra carefull, espeasily in the 0 visabilitie dust. 8:00am, Green flag drops to start the pros, then 100's bikes, pro qauds, 200's bikes, 200's quads, 300's bikes, 600's bikes, 700's bikes, 400s bikes, 300s quads, 400s bikes, 500s bikes, and finailly last off the line was the 900s class bikes & qauds. I had the # 2 starting position in the 700 class. Next to me was Lonnie Demarsh on a KTM520. He pulled the hole shot ( I'm on a stock XR400). I had to eat his dust and take a pounding of baseball size rocks for the first 3 miles. When we got to some tight twisty sections of the course, Lonnie left the door open and I got passed him. I caught up to slower 300 bikes and even some 100 class qauds and had to eat their dust till I could find a hole in the dust to make a pass. First pit was at the 28 mile mark, were I was able to get passed 2 600 class bikes. next pit was at the 78 mile mark. ( a big thanks to the Crawfords for taking care of my fueling) Now I was on the home stretch, only 23 miles to go. At the 96 mile mark, we had to cross the highway. On the other side was some thick nasty silt. I was running along the barbed wire fench at about 75 MPH, when I'm not sure what happened but the bike went down and I flew over the handle bars. I landed about 100ft out in front of my bike. When I hit the ground I landed on my back, I think my camelback stuffed with snack bars & still 1/2 full of water cushioned my fall. I jumped up and ran back to my bike just as the motor stopped. It took about 10 kicks to refire, and I was completely out of breath. I knew now I only had about 4 miles to go so I took it a little easy at a steady pace. They told us the race was to be 116 miles but when I crossed the finish line, I only had 100.5 on the trip meter. Boy was I glad, I do not think I could had gone much further. Sorry I do not know/have all the results, but here are the ones I know: Sr.Pro 1st place # 60 Alan Violette, 100 class qaud and RA member 3rd place # 150 Jeff Henson. If I'm right Jeff should have wrapped up the championship for the 30+ open class qauds. Good job Jeff!. 100 class bikes & my riding buddys 4th place # 145 Joe Ramoes & 5th place #114 Mike Parks. Mike went into this race only 4 points out of 1st place for the 250cc championship crown. We are still not sure the out come for the 250 OA standings. Good luck Mike. And for my class, the 700's 3rd place # 734 Lonnie Demarsh, 2nd place #708 Jim Chapmen, 1st place and my second win in a row, #777 Phil Brooks:D That was the final race of the 2002 season. 2003 1st race, with be held at Sandy beach in Rocky Point Mexico on Jan. 4th. I hope to run the full schedule next year and make a run for the 40+ points championship. Phil # 777

Good job guys. I know that barbed wire fence very well. I seen Raper go over the bars there once too right in front of me. There are some hidden rocks in that soft stuff that you can't see until your face is sliding across them.

I heard that supercross dude Eric Anderson went down there and took a commanding win on a KX500. Todd Johnson got a front flat about a mile into the race and finished with it flat for a 5th or 6th O/A. Toby Bryant (2000 state champ, and Rapers ex-Honda team mate) took second O/A, I don't know 3rd or 4th place. I guess it will all come clear when the official results get posted.

The start of that race is brutal also with those huge rocks. Here are some pics of LAST YEARS Pro start. #7 is me of course.

You may be right about hiden rocks Dave. It scared the crap out of me flying through the air within only a foot of two from that barbed wire. I thought for sure I was going to hit it and hang there upside down. When I got up and back to my bike I looked but could not figure what I hit, never saw anything? I had just bought a brand new pair of heavy duty wire cutters the purpose of freeing myself or another rider if need be. When I got up off the ground I see the cutters laying on the ground next to me. I gave it a secound thought of picking them up, but knew I could not stash them on me or reach back to put then in then camelback pouch. Some lucky local will have himself a new tool.:D Phil # 777

I just re-read your post. That isn't the same fence I originally thought, but I know it just the same. I've seen lots of guys crash there for no reason. Same M.O. lots of hidden rocks.

Congrats on your win. Looks like the 600 guys need a new friend to race with next season. You can forget about that 800 class B.S. you posted earlier, I won't allow it (sandbagging is boring). Maybe #666 will fit you nicely, then again you may want to stay away from that voodoo. #677 sounds about right for your number next year. It's a done deal.

I need to call Whiplash and reserve my #7 for next year, I'll reserve #677 for you. What do you think?

800 class? I'm not over 50 yet, I'm just turning 41. Yeh, I will most likely go to the 600 class, I'm sure I'll get my butt kicked by those guys but, This way I can start up front of all the 40+ riders & make a run for the O/A next year. Not sure about #666? Women & childern will be told to avoid me. I saw a guy at speedworld with that #. He had one of those old "dumbo" open face helmets on, and demon stickers all over his bike. He was wearing a tee shirt with a pack of smokes wrapped up in his sleeve, & wearind tennis shoes. It did look pretty funny though.[}:)] By the way, Parks called me today and told me that He & Sam Myers are tied for the O/A points. Mike believes he will take the championship by more 250cc O/A's this year. Way to go Mike! Hope you get your BLUE MACHINE here real quick Dave so you can stop your with-draws and start flying again![:p] Phil # 777

What a great race that was! Weather and course conditions don't get much better than that in Mexico. Much of the sand wash sections were still wet from recent rains and the temperatures were perfect! I hear the only serious injury was a broken collar bone.

I had one close call. I clipped the wall of that narrow sand wash section while trying to see through some bike dust. Luckily the front wheel didn't turn into it. I decided to bypass the Curio Shop and went on to the Goat Farm. I think it payed off as the air cleared dramatically after passing through the Curio Shop pit.

I busted a rim, flattening a rear tire in that high speed rocky section right before the La Pinta Beach pit. It didn't slow me to much. 6th gear on a flat tire is a bit scary though. Aside from the Whoop-road, the course was pretty fast.

Congrats on your first place finish Phil! I saw your truck at the Oasis but never saw you. Yes, that wrapped up the 30+ points championship for me. Sorry Slyder [:p] Other than Wickenburg, I'd say it was a great year! We celebrated at JJ's with plenty of Dos XX's and tacos. The fish tacos at the taco stand next to JJ's rule!!..and only a $1 each. I think I ate about 40 tacos over the weekend. On to Pink Cadillac for some late night partying. Good thing the condo we rent is just up the hill from PC. We walked home and got some much needed rest.

Next year I'll only be running a few of my favorite events- probably the two main Mexico races, Hyroglyphic, and Alto Pit. We'll be covering many of the Whiplash events in ATV Illustrated Magazine so i will probably be at the events I don't race taking photos. I'll be sure to snap a few for you bike guys. [8D]

congrats on the wins, I am hoping sometime this next spring when I get my suspension work all done I can start racing.... I will end up being in either the 400cc or the 500cc class, depending on what kind of bore and stroke I do to the engine.

[^]My first Pro Race, I signed up in the MCM class and had a great time. Second off the line behind John Albro but made a quick pass around mile two. Held the lead up to my first pit @ the Curio Shop. Where Richards and Williford passed me. I caught up to Williford at the Goat Farm and we had a great dice for the next ?? miles, we caught Richards @ La Pinta Beach pit. After the pit I picked up a long piece of bailing wire with my rear hub and it extended to the back of my right arm where it laid a huge 4" gash and enormous bruise. I had to stop to remove it from my bike and also to scream some obscenities. Finishing third with an all time personal best time @ 2hrs and 33 seconds. I wish I had rejetted for this race because I could not pull 6th gear. Too Lean, my pipe is now blue all the way up and into the silencer. Lots of fun and a good learning experience, I am looking forward to a stellar 2003 season.

Nice job lipz, I hate that barbed wire fence wrapped in the hub trick. I seen a friend of mine (Frank Febo) run over a fence that was laying down in a sand wash and it wrapped up in his rear wheel. We were cooking along pretty fast and his bike came to a dead stop but he kept going. He looked like superman flying through the air without his bike under him. Pretty funny because he didn't get hurt at all.

Are you sure that was John Albro you were behind? He broke his collar bone back in the Tucson race last month. I didn't think he would be riding for a few more weeks at least.

Congrats on your move up. You are in some pretty fast company.

Yeh Dave, #77 John Albro did race! I had forgot that he was injured in the fun run at Tucson. I had talked to him B4 the race, & I actually finished just a minute or so behind him. ( at least I think I did? ) I'll have to check again when results are posted on site. He mut have been hurting if I was able to get that close to him? Phil # 611

:)Yep! Mr. Albro did race this one. I have to hand it to him. I don't think I could have pulled it off but he went the whole distance... Thanks, guys for the support. I will definately have my work cut out for me this year. Phil, I didn't see you either but I did hear of your move up and Congratulations to that! The 6's are a very excellent group of riders and you'll have lots of fun in that class. They are very fast and you will be a good addition. I'll be looking forward to seeing you at Sandy Beach!

Jeff, I have'nt decided on the G.P. yet. I'm still limping around from my fall in Mexico. I pulled/strained/sprained or something to my calf muscle. Not sure what I did, but it's swollen and I can't bend or move it around much. I know I can ride but would hate to do more damage. We'll see how I feel when I get up sunday morning. I will at least go put to see how things go[:p] Phil # 611 quote:Originally posted by Jeff Henson
