View Full Version : Great Westen Trail
Hi all,
I've been looking for the Great Western Trail with limited success until recently. My buddy and I have located the trail head n. of Apache Junction and again just south of saguaro lake. Just wondering if anyone has actually had a ride on this trail? It looks pretty straight forward on all th topo maps i've seen.

Is being asymmetrical so bad?
This sounds like Bulldog canyon, if it is there will be locked gates at each trailhead.
It's been awhile since i've ridden there. What I remember was the scenery, it was spring and the desert was in bloom. It's a rocky jeep trail but nothing technical. To get the combination to the locked gates visit the Tonto NF ranger office in Mesa.
Kato,
Thanks much for the info. I was told about the combination lock by two guys that were there today. They said that the Forestry Service changes the combination on a monthly basis and notifies you of the new combination if you obtain a no-cost permit from them.
Thanks for the info. Greatly appreciated.

Gordon's Well is very safe and family friendly. Great dunes...not as big as Glamis, but very fun. It does draw quite a bit of people on the big weekends though.

I have enjoyed it on the quad from Bartlett Lake to Parks, near Williams on I-40. Did it in two rides, one from Bartlett Lake to Jerome, and then from Jerome to Parks.

Yeah what is with the Great Western Trail? Does anyone know of maps or waypoints for the trail? Im trying to piece it all together so any bit will help. Im planning to ride end to end next spring. yeah thats Mexico to Canada. Ive got others helping me out other states as well, so AZ is my focus here. Anyone know if it actually gets difficult? Ive heard it gets gnarly in some spots.

The Great Western Trail, Thats part of the Butcher Jones Rec area also AKA Rolls? Correct?
I 4by around there quite abit and Ride my Dirt Bike also. Alot of the Hill in between the washes, get pretty rutted from the other trucks, but on a dirtbike and quad its a breeze to Zoom up and down. Trucks, Lockers or atleast Limited slip is a must. I have non of these on my Truck so it Gets Very Technical in some spots to prevent one tire to go airborn and spin.
You can enter these Trails with out a Lock on the gates either at Butcherjones rec entrance ( roughly 2-3 miles north of the Saugaro lake.) or just past that entance first Right at the camp ground. If you take the Trails towards 4 peaks thats where youll end up. I recomend visiting the Coves. Very nice place to Camp.
