View Full Version : Box Canyon
Looking for a group wanting to do box canyon. I've never been off that way so I wanted to tag along with a group. If anyone wants to go in the next couple weeks before it gets really hot let me know.
I found this site just in time to miss one that was scheduled.

Tod,
Was on that ride yesterday with 11 riders in all. Great ride! Having technical difficulties and directional problems we had to skip the coke ovens but still had a good time.
Make sure you go with someone who knows the area. Have a great time.

Looking to head out there my self. Just bought my first quad wanted to try it out. Was going to head out there in a couple of weeks. The thing is it will be my first time going so not familiar with the place. Let me know if you want to set something up.

Yeah, I'll defiantly want to go. Just Shoot me a time you'll be free to go for the day. I also just bought my quad been riding around town on it but I'm really looking forward to some trailing. Thinking of buying another quad thats more for trailing soon. I recently purchased a sport quad...

We are heading up this weekend (tomorrow) to do some riding was hoping it was going to be cooler than Tucson but looks like it is going to warm (glad we have AC on the camper). Oreo has a need to ride nad she picked this weekend to head out and do it. Again it should be a good ride for us.

I'll post back in a couple days about this date.

I wish I could head out tomorrow just a tad bit short notice

I may be up for this date too, let me know. I wouldn't mind exploring the Box Canyon area again, I was on the one last week.

Ok, seems like we have the date together. Check out this site and it will show us the map. riderplanet-usa.com Click Arizona under OHV trails and then find Florence Coke Ovens. It also has other places to ride.
We have the date, but do we have a leader/someone who knows the area? I've been there only once but I have a book with all the coordinates and trails in it which I could put on my gps, but it's annoying to have to stop and check the gps all the time, especially since I'm new at using it. Also, Coke Ovens may be a bit much if this is your first trail ride. But there are other trails there, like Martinez Canyon. I'll look at the book tonight.

I've been riding since I was little I'll be good. I just bought this one like 3 weeks ago. It's been a few years since the one I had before that. It was stolen... I really wanna do Coke Ovens. Do you think a TRX450r will make it there and back on 1 tank?

I ride on a RZR 4 and have been out to the Coke Ovens once already this year, but am interested in another trip. We staged off of 79 just south of the 60 -- not off Price Rd. I remember the way and captured it on GPS. Let me know if this is going to happen. I'd love to go out this coming Sat.

We just did this ride last Friday at night. I was riding a quad with a dead battery to start with, then about 3/4 of the way into the ride, my quad overheated and shut down. Thank God I had a pull start as a back up, after it cooled off, it started right up and we continued to ride. It took us a while to find our truck, but had we not had a GPS, it would have taken a lot longer.

I'll be pretty upset if I have any technical difficulties. Sorry to hear about it over heating. Do you know why it overheated?

The 3/26 ride turned back on the way to Coke Ovens because some of the sport quads were concerned with gas. I know one of them ran out just as we got back to the trucks. I have a 2 gallon jug I can bring for you, my Wolverine 450 does 71 miles on a tank so I shouldn't need it. I'll have to look in my book tonight and see how many miles this trail is supposed to be.

4/16 won't work for me. 4/23 might be an option if you guys don't get it going on 4/16 falls through.

Okay Cool. I been about 100miles to my first tank of gas, but thats not trailing thats just driving...
The book says Coke Ovens is 14 miles round trip, 3-4 hours. Adding Box Canyon would make the total 25-30 miles round trip.
Im Ceezr. Box Canyon sounds cool. Waiting on my silencer/spark arr.
Getting my permits by next week. I want in on box canyon. So any groups goin anytime soon let me know the date and time and I will let u know if I can make it.

I guess getting lost a couple times adds up the miles. What did we end up doing 59-60? We didn't even make the Ovens!

Its getting closer guys. What time are we gonna meet and where?

Would you be willing to lead the way? I've never been on this trail. As soon as I get a reply I'll post the event up so maybe we can get a couple more in the next few days.

Yeah, looking at the book again, I guess it depends where you stage. They are going by staging on Price road, which probably cuts out 8-10 miles, plus they stage from South of Box Canyon, so they don't have to ride through it twice like we did.

Okay, I'll lead. Steve ("Luke") will send me the tracks and then I'll post the ride, since I'll then have a better idea how many miles it will really be.
Also, I would prefer to stage off of the 60, rather than going way down the 79 and then driving 10+ miles on Price Rd, which is unpaved. However, staging off the 60 means a longer ride to get to Box Canyon, and riding down the canyon and then back up it, which I'm okay with, I just don't know how many sport quads we'll have and don't want gas to be a concern again. I'll ask Luke to send tracks for both stage areas and then I should have a better idea of the mileage. It also sounds like everyone is up for the challenge of Coke Ovens (a couple steep hills), but I guess we can decide then.

Yeah I have a sports quad i think I've mentioned it before I'm down for either area.
