We just recieved our results from the Parker 250. On the bottom of the results it states that "Ty Davis and Russ Pearson are banned for one year of racing with Best In The Dessert."

Hey Ben, welcome and thanks for the info. Nobody seems to be talking, especially Ty, Russ, and Casey. I heard lawers are involved. YUCK.

For those of you that don't know Ben (probably everyone) He is a fellow desert racer that has been racing in the expert class (100's)for the last year or so. He has just made the jump up into the Pro class and is planning to wax me at the Hieroglyphic race. He is a talented rider.

Ben,
#940? Is that the 4-stroke expert class. A couple years ago I entered that class and I think I was #938.

How did you do in Laughlin? Who'd you team with?

David,
Yeah #940 is four stroke expert. We did very good there in Parker. We O/A the expert class. Jason Keys and myself rode good. We finished 14th O/A, and I had a front flat.
We didn't do Laughlin. With it only being two weeks after Parker we didn't have enough money. But next year we plan on doing the points. Jason Keys, Adam Johnston, and myself are doing Vegas to Reno this year though.
David I don't know about waxin you. You are very fast yourself!

Adam Johnston?!? I haven't heard that name in a while, I guess he is still racing. The last time I saw that guy I was still living down in San Manuel, '99 I think. We went out riding with some others and I blew the hell out of the tranny on my KX500 so I limped back home in 2nd gear with my tail between my legs. I heard he was going to come out and ride the Pro class because he thought we were all too slow. I never saw him after that.

Adam Johnston doesn't race to much any more. He started a family, but still rides every once in a while. He did Tonopah 300 with Jason and I back in August. He still is fast for not riding much. Adam and Michael Baldwin used to battle out back a couple of years ago. He misses racing all the time.

I also heard Baldwin made a switch to the Pro class. I have got a lot more NEW dust to eat this year. I'm glad to finally see a lot of Pros out at the races. Back in 98 and 99 It was a good turn out when there were 4 Pros on the line.

There should be a good showing for Pleasant. I count at least 5 of us in open Pro. I wish Whiplash would realize that more racers and pros show up for the slower more technical races.

That has been the case recently. I believe people are getting tired of the same old whooped out dirt roads, I know I am.

In the past though, more people would show for the non-Gran Prix type races. It seems like when the tracks get more technical, the Pros start showing up, and the non-pros are more opt to stay home. Those tracks aren't as easy. As we already know the money is in the non-pros than the pros in Whiplash. They will cater to the money makers, which is fine. It's their organization, not mine. They make their money any way they can.

Like I said, recently EVERYONE is starting to like the technical stuff not just the pros. I am glad they are doing more technical races even if the turn out is smaller. I think others, non-pro and pro are starting to see it our way and we may start having those huge Rocky Point type turn outs in the smaller Prescott type races.

Ok, I haven't heard the rest of the Ty Davis deal. Why is he banned?

Never met a CR500 I didn't like.

That they didn't say, and most likely will not say. From what we gathered in Parker team Monticlair went out on the course to pickup Russ Pearson and the bike. When Casey Folks annonced that he was going to ban them, he stated "Ty Davis and Russ Pearson are banned from BITD for life." Now Casey is saying for one year. If we find out more we will keep you updated.

Hello All,

I just wanted to say that I strongly agree with you guys on having more of the technical races. If Whiplash and the others would start bringing the "REAL" racing back we would probally see alot more top racers come back out. Anybody can hold the throttle wide open for 100 miles...... Hope to start racing again this year. See ya around.

Very true. Anybody can ride WFO, plus you get hurt alot worse. Lets slow it down, and get some skill involved. If you do crash it does not hurt as bad.

I agree totally with you guys. Although the worst crash I've ever had was under 20mph. I damn near lost a couple fingers. 4 surgeries, and 3 lost race seasons. I was out screwing around with out the proper protection, but thats another story all together.

Good to see you on this site. We will see you at pleasant. Randall is going to race I think. We will be there for pit crew if needed and I'll put a 49 tooth sprocket on my spare this time...My bike stuck a valve and is down for a while. I sure hope they set up the pits different this time. Pros and exps need to be able to leave after they race without having to drive down a live track to find egress.

Hello Fred,
I talked to Randall yesterday, and he is still planning on racing. If you want to bring your extra wheels that would be good. I don't know if you heard but I bought a YZ 450, and I kept the WR 400. So I have an extra set of wheels now. Plus I bought an extra rear wheel after the Wickenburg race. I'm now prepared. I think. You don't have an extra 48 tooth rear do you?

Let me know.

Ben,
Sorry, just 45, 49, and 50. I'll bring my backup for Randall. New 739's on both. How can Casey pitch someone like Ty? There has to be something other than course issues. Ty's one of the nicest guys out there and I find it hard to believe people (sponsors) would stand for banning.
See you Sunday.

I agree! Ty is a great guy. At the last WORCS race at Canyon, I went out to off road section during the saturday race and took some photos. I was at a short uphill section and every lap he would wheelie up it for me. Some great photos

Casey is a tough promoter. Break his rules and your done, he stands by his convictions. There is certain things he will not tolerate, and entering a race course to retrieve a broke down rider during a race is one of them. Riding backwards on a race course, and cheating are probably the other two things that will get you booted instantaneously no matter who you are.

Apparently they asked permission to retrieve the bike and rider, and Casey told them "absolutely not". They did it any ways.

The original ban was for life, and Casey knocked it down to one year. Casey never backs down like that, but I hear lawyers got involved.

As a top pro Ty would take off probably the first or second bike so if they were very far into the race they could be something like SIX hours from sweep help. Casey really waits a long time for the course to clear before sending sweeps and closing pits. At Vegas to Reno my partner went down (busted case cover) between 4 and 5 and if he was not able to limp the bike back to pit 4 he would have been out there something like eight hours!!! and we started with the amatuers. I think Casey may have to look at this a little closer as far as rescuing riders. If it can be done perpendicular from the course it should be OK.
Whiplash doesn't have an issue with this as I needed a seat-ectomy after coming upon the 5-mile-an-hour rescue buggy with my throttle
WFO. Casey does have a better org. though.

Actually Whiplash does have a policy similar to Casey's but Jay is pretty flexible if you can prove you can do the rescue safely and OFFCOURSE. I rescued Rapers 500 after that nasty rear flat that ended is overall hope 2 miles from the finish last year in Mexico. I was able to drive down a side road and get close enought to the bike to rescue it without making a danger. Eric Brown was in second, and stopped to pick up Dayton. They went over the finish line together for the win.

Racerfisk (Mark) broke down in Rocky point last year and waited some unquestionable amount of time to be rescued. It was hot and he was pretty tired. There was no trees or bushes nearby so he pushed his bike to a far off tree on the horizon for some shade. By the time he got there he was dehydrated and in pretty bad shape. He needed some shade to rest under. As he got to the tree he could hear this loud noise. He looked up to find the tree was one big bee hive. All that work for nothing, and there was no other trees in site. I think he used his bike for shade out in the middle of nowhere for hours before he was rescued. And remember Jay always says that if you break down and leave your bike, so will he. You have to stay with your ride.

I was rescued at Holbrook by the whiplash quad. I was at the far back of the course when my bike seized. I was going to stop on the next pit for gas and water so I had none. I was lucky that there was a guy and his two kids out there riding a clapped-out three wheeler. He had a spare root beer. That was the best root beer I ever had... When you end your day like that the wind goes out of your sails and I think you are more suseptable to fatigue related problems. I know that I felt more tired than I should have and all my problems seemed larger. The whiplash quad towed me in during the race down at least a mile of the track before turning off to a side trail. This route was not necessary in that there were a lot of side trails. I generally think stay off the track is a good idea but there are a lot more dangers in the track than are posed by someone along side the track. Also, last years Heiroglyphic had the worst pit setup I have ever seen. There were people loading up after racing and had no way of getting out without driving down at least some of or crossing some of the track. I stopped Jay and told him he needed to get a flagman down there to slowdown pit speeds and escort groups of racers out and he screamed at me!?!? and said they would have to wait until the quads finished!!! We started at 0-dark-thirty and raced all day and he expected everyone to wait until what would have been dusk to leave. Try telling that to mom and the now very cranky kids. This is the kind of thing Jay needs to address if he is ever going to have a first-rate org. This your-on-your-own mentality is not user-friendly.
Don't get me wrong, I have raced whiplash for years and appreciate what Jay and co. go through but they have had years to think about this stuff and it doesn't cost money to be smart about setup.

Ragdoll,
I hear you about setup, but that is a very confined area, and people knew that they would be trapped come race time when they chose their pit spots. I guess there weren't that many alternates either. I agree with the flag people. The alternate solution is regulated pit speed, which really bites. You haul @$$ for an hour then come around a corner and have to go 5mph for 200 yards. It's hard and a lot of people cheat there. You can make up time on someone by going 10mph.

I love having "hot pits". I actually made a pass on Todd Johnson last year in the pits. He took a tad too long, and I blasted by him and made a few seconds on him before he got going. I beat him by about that much time. Pit strategy goes out the door with a regulated speed, because you can cheat off a few seconds if you have to by going a little faster than they can see.

David,
I completly agree with you about pit speed. It took me and my team a couple of years to get stops down to a few seconds. (actually at Kearny I had a beer during one of my pits...) We have one of the crew go up the course with a radio to let us know when one of our guys is coming. If you don't do this now you should try it. Flat tire info and missing goggles info early helps.
What would Casey do, hmmmmm...
Thanks for not getting upset with my comments. I'm just an amatuer and will never be real fast but I do think we all have something to bring to the party.
Good luck Sunday and try not to scratch up your friends bike.
Fred
