Here are a few pieces of information you should know before heading off to California to ride:

Helmet and whip antenna (with flag) are required to ride. California registered OHVs need green/red stickers (tags) whichever one applies. OHVs that are registered out of California need the non-resident tags. They run $20.00 per ride and are good from January 1st to December 31st. The ride areas are fee supported so there are fee stations located at the entrance areas. You have a choice here... $10.00 for a week or $30.00 for the season (October 1st to September 30th). They take cash, Visa or Master Card. There are restrooms but very little else.

Information contributed by Mike Arnold (SW Sandrider) of Yuma Arizona.

Adamcorb,
The following link has the updated 2002 regulations. I don't believe it answers your question but has a lot of good info nonetheless http://www.glamisonline.com/New2002Regs.shtml

Yes, you need the sticker in all the California sand dunes. We usually get them at a bike shop in Yuma. It is right off the free way next to a gas station and down the street from a buggy shop. If you get to the buggy shop you went too far.You CAN"T get them at the pay stations.

A little info on the non-resident tags. If your vehicle is registered in your home state you do not need a non-resident tag. So, if you bought you bike from a dealer in AZ and is registered, you don't need to spend the extra $20.

See http://www.glamisdunes.com/Pages/rulesandfees/noncalifornia.htm for more info.

Good point I forgot about that. There isne other thing though, you need to have your plate on, I think

If it itches, it will be scratched.

No wait, I know exactly what you need. Judging from last trip every one will need a good support network of friends and at least one cell phone with service adn good medical insurance; helicoptor rides aren't cheap.

I haven't ever been hassled by the rangers for not having a plate. What we do is carry the registration on us when we ride. Or, put it in a zip lock bag and stick it under the seat. As long as you can prove it's registered they won't give you trouble.

Keep in mind there is a difference between having a "Title", which is what you get when you buy your quad/bike from the retailer, and being "Registered" which you have to turn in the title plate to recieve at the DMV/MVD. Registration requires that your vehicle be insured.
Therefore, the question should be... is it enough that my quad has a "Title" in the state of AZ... or do I need to get it "Registered" and therefore insured?

OK -- So I just got off the phone with John from the Cahuilla Ranger Station... At the time of purchase of your quad from the retailer (not sure about Bikes), a transfer of title is given to you from the state of AZ the says the quad is registered with your name within AZ. A little later you should have recieved an Off Road Vehicle license plate. This plate works in conjunction with your "Title" and is enough to satisfy the Rules and Regulations of the Cahuilla Ranger Station as stated on the website
http://www.glamisonline.org/New2002Regs.shtml
that 3. Beginning 1/1/98, off highway vehicles that do not have a valid registration of permit from the owners home state (incl. Mexico and Canada) will be required to purchase a special California permit (sticker) through selected vendors in California and Nevada or the a California Dept. of Parks and Recreation ( 916324-4442 (38020 C.V.C).
You do need to have you plate with you or at least your title papers.

Keep in mind that this plate is DIFFERENT from the new plate you recieve if you get your quad street legalized. When/if you do that, you "Register" your quad (like you do your car) each year, you get a sticker to put on you plate (like you do your car) and this plate has the "MC" on the left of the plate which tells the officer as he pulls you over that your vehicle is not only "Titled" to you, but also "Registered" in your name within the state of AZ.
I know its a mouth full but there is a difference. "Registering" requires that you insure your vehicle.
As stated above, I'm not sure how it works for Bikes, but I believe it is the same.
Enjoy

If your bike is registered in AZ or wherever you can also get a sticker from the Ranger station on Gecko rd. Depending on the Rangers attitude it may e free or cost tyou the twenty bucks.
